Why Do I Have Dry Skin? Causes and What Helps

Dry skin happens when your skin loses moisture faster than it can replace it, usually because something has disrupted its protective outer barrier. That barrier, the outermost layer of your skin, is built like a brick wall: tough skin cells held together by a mortar of natural fats. When that fatty mortar breaks down or thins out, water escapes from deeper layers and your skin dries out. The cause could be as simple as your shower routine or as complex as a hormonal shift, but understanding the mechanism helps you fix it.

Your Skin Barrier Is the Starting Point

The outermost layer of your skin, called the stratum corneum, is only about 20 cells thick. It relies on a precise mix of ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol arranged in tightly packed layers to keep water sealed inside. In healthy skin, these fats form a dense, organized structure. In dry or irritated skin, that structure loosens, the fats become less organized, and water slips through more easily.

People with eczema or psoriasis, for instance, have a measurably different fat composition in their skin barrier. Their fatty acids tend to be shorter and contain more unsaturated fats, which creates a looser, leakier arrangement. But you don’t need a diagnosed skin condition to have a compromised barrier. Everyday habits damage it, too.

Hot Showers and Harsh Soaps

Hot water is one of the most common and overlooked causes of dry skin. High water temperatures strip sebum, the oily substance your skin produces to stay lubricated, right off the surface. Hot water also raises your skin’s pH, which disrupts the slightly acidic environment your barrier needs to function properly. A higher pH increases water loss through the skin and slows the repair process. Keeping showers warm rather than hot, and shorter than 10 minutes, makes a real difference.

The cleansers you use matter just as much. Surfactants, the foaming agents in soaps and body washes, work by binding to fats and washing them away. That’s great for removing dirt, but harsh surfactants don’t stop at surface grime. They penetrate into the skin barrier, dissolve the protective fats between cells, and can even denature proteins in deeper layers. This triggers inflammation and disrupts the enzymes your skin needs to rebuild its own moisturizing compounds. The longer a harsh cleanser sits on your skin and the more concentrated it is, the more irritation it causes. Fragrance-free, gentle cleansers labeled “for sensitive skin” typically use milder surfactant types that do less damage.

Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated Skin

These two terms sound interchangeable, but they describe different problems. Dry skin lacks oil. It’s a skin type, meaning your sebaceous glands simply don’t produce enough lipids. You’ll notice flaking, scaling, redness, and a rough texture. It can also make conditions like eczema or dermatitis flare up more frequently.

Dehydrated skin lacks water. Any skin type can become dehydrated, even oily skin. The signs are different: dullness, dark under-eye circles, fine lines that seem to appear out of nowhere, and a tired-looking complexion. A quick way to check is the pinch test. Pinch a small fold of skin on the back of your hand and hold it for a few seconds. If it snaps back immediately, hydration is fine. If it takes a moment to settle, you’re likely dehydrated.

You can have both problems at once, and each one calls for a slightly different approach to moisturizing.

Environmental and Seasonal Triggers

Cold, dry air pulls moisture out of your skin faster than warm, humid air does. Winter is the worst season for dry skin because outdoor air holds less humidity and indoor heating systems dry it out further. If your skin gets noticeably worse between November and March, low humidity is almost certainly a factor. Running a humidifier in your bedroom can help offset this.

Wind and sun exposure also degrade the barrier over time. UV radiation damages the lipid structure and accelerates the breakdown of proteins that hold moisture in. Even on cloudy days, UV penetrates enough to contribute to long-term dryness if you’re not using sun protection.

Aging and Hormonal Changes

Skin naturally produces less oil as you age. Sebum production starts declining in your 30s and 40s, which means the built-in lubrication your skin relied on in your 20s gradually disappears. For women, menopause accelerates this dramatically. As estrogen levels drop, skin loses both hydration and collagen, leading to dryness, thinner skin, and wrinkles that seem to appear rapidly over a few years. Men experience a more gradual decline, but the trend is the same.

This is why someone who never had dry skin before can suddenly develop it in middle age. It’s not a fluke. It’s a predictable biological shift that calls for richer, more protective moisturizers than you may have needed before.

Medical Conditions Worth Knowing About

Sometimes persistent dry skin signals something going on internally. Hypothyroidism, where your thyroid gland underproduces hormones, is one of the more common culprits. Low thyroid function slows down skin cell turnover and reduces oil production, leaving skin dry, rough, and sometimes itchy. Diabetes is another. High blood sugar levels impair circulation and can damage the nerves that signal your sweat and oil glands to do their jobs. Malnutrition, particularly deficiencies in essential fatty acids, zinc, and certain vitamins, also shows up as dry, flaky skin.

If your dry skin doesn’t improve with consistent moisturizing, affects large areas of your body, or comes with other symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, or excessive thirst, an underlying condition could be the reason.

What Actually Hydrates Your Skin

Moisturizers work through three distinct mechanisms, and the most effective products combine all three.

  • Humectants pull water into the skin from deeper layers and from the surrounding air. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are the most common examples. They’re the ingredients that make your skin look plump and smooth right after application.
  • Emollients fill the gaps between skin cells, smoothing out roughness and improving texture. Jojoba oil, squalane, shea butter, and ceramides all function as emollients. They essentially patch the holes in your skin’s “mortar.”
  • Occlusives form a physical seal on the skin’s surface to lock in whatever moisture is already there. Thicker ingredients like beeswax, cocoa butter, and petroleum jelly fall into this category. They don’t add moisture, they prevent it from escaping.

If your skin is dehydrated (lacking water), you need humectants first. If your skin is truly dry (lacking oil), emollients and occlusives are more important. For most people dealing with general dryness, a product that layers all three does the best job.

How and When to Apply Moisturizer

Timing matters more than most people realize. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying moisturizer immediately after showering or bathing, while your skin is still damp. Damp skin absorbs moisturizer more effectively, and applying it right away traps the water that’s already on your skin before it evaporates. Pat yourself dry gently rather than rubbing, then apply.

Once a day often isn’t enough. Applying moisturizer several times throughout the day, especially after washing your hands, keeps the barrier consistently supported. Carrying a non-greasy hand cream for after handwashing helps prevent the cracked, rough hands that frequent washing causes. Every product you use should be fragrance-free, since added fragrances are among the most common causes of skin irritation and can worsen dryness over time.

Does Drinking More Water Help?

This is one of the most repeated pieces of skin advice, and the reality is more nuanced than “just drink more water.” Research has found a positive association between higher water intake and skin hydration, along with regular physical activity. But the effect is modest compared to what topical moisturizers can do. If you’re severely dehydrated, drinking more water will help your skin. If you’re already drinking a normal amount, adding extra glasses is unlikely to fix dry skin on its own. Think of hydration as the foundation, not the fix. External care through gentle cleansing and consistent moisturizing does the heavy lifting.
