Post-nasal drip happens when your body produces excess mucus or the mucus becomes thicker than usual, and you feel it collecting in the back of your throat. Your nose and sinuses produce mucus constantly to trap particles and fight infection, so some drainage down your throat is normal and goes unnoticed. You only feel it when something shifts the balance, either ramping up production or changing the consistency so it no longer slides down easily.
The cause could be as simple as dry winter air or as persistent as an undiagnosed allergy. Figuring out your specific trigger is the key to getting relief.
Allergies Are the Most Common Cause
Seasonal and year-round allergies are the leading reason people develop noticeable post-nasal drip. When your immune system reacts to pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold, the lining of your nasal passages swells and starts producing more mucus than it can drain efficiently. If your drip follows a seasonal pattern, worsens outdoors, or comes with itchy eyes and sneezing, allergies are the most likely explanation.
Year-round allergies can be sneakier. Dust mites in your bedding or a pet you’ve had for years can cause chronic low-grade symptoms that feel like a permanent cold. You might not connect the drip to an allergen because nothing about your environment seems to have changed.
Colds and Sinus Infections
A viral cold is the most obvious trigger. Your body floods your nasal passages with mucus to flush out the virus, and for a week or two, you feel the constant trickle. Clear, thin discharge usually points to a viral infection. If the drip hasn’t improved after 10 to 14 days, or if it starts getting worse instead of better, a bacterial sinus infection may have developed on top of the original cold.
Sinus infections tend to produce thicker, yellow or green mucus along with facial pressure or pain, especially around the cheeks and forehead. The drainage often has a foul smell, which you might notice as persistent bad breath. Fevers are actually more common with viral colds than with sinus infections. It takes a fairly severe sinus infection to cause a fever.
Irritants That Have Nothing to Do With Allergies
Your nasal lining can react to environmental irritants even when your immune system isn’t involved. This is called nonallergic rhinitis, and the symptoms can look identical to allergies. Common triggers include cigarette smoke, strong perfumes, cleaning chemicals, smog, and exhaust fumes. Some people develop symptoms from workplace exposures like construction materials, chemical fumes, or compost.
Temperature and humidity changes also play a role. Walking from a heated building into cold air, or spending time in a very dry environment, can trigger swelling in your nasal lining and a sudden increase in mucus. If your post-nasal drip seems to come and go without a clear pattern, think about whether it lines up with weather shifts, air quality, or specific environments.
Acid Reflux You Might Not Feel
One of the less obvious causes is a condition where stomach acid travels up past your esophagus and reaches your throat. Unlike typical heartburn, this “silent reflux” often produces no chest burning at all. The acid irritates the sensitive tissue in your throat and disrupts the normal mechanisms that clear mucus and infections from your throat and sinuses. The result is mucus that lingers rather than draining properly, creating a persistent post-nasal drip sensation.
Your throat tissue is far more vulnerable to acid than your esophagus. It lacks the same protective lining, and it doesn’t have the same mechanisms to wash reflux away, so even a small amount of acid can cause ongoing irritation. If your post-nasal drip is worst in the morning, worsens after meals, or comes with a chronic cough, throat clearing, or hoarseness, reflux could be the hidden cause.
Medications and Structural Issues
Certain medications increase nasal secretions as a side effect. Birth control pills and some blood pressure medications are known culprits. If your post-nasal drip started around the same time as a new prescription, it’s worth bringing up with your doctor.
Structural issues in your nose can also contribute. A significantly deviated septum, where the wall between your nostrils is crooked enough to block one side, can trap mucus and lead to chronic sinus problems. Nasal polyps, which are noncancerous growths in the nasal passages, create similar blockages. These causes tend to produce symptoms that are constant rather than coming and going.
What Actually Helps
Treatment depends entirely on the cause, which is why identifying your trigger matters more than reaching for a random over-the-counter option. Antihistamines work well for allergy-driven drip but can actually make things worse if your problem isn’t allergies, because they dry out mucus and make it thicker and harder to clear. If your issue is thick, sticky mucus rather than a runny flood, a mucus-thinning medication like guaifenesin (Mucinex) is a better choice.
Saline nasal rinses are one of the most effective and safest options regardless of the cause. Flushing your nasal passages with salt water physically washes out mucus, allergens, and irritants. The CDC recommends using only distilled or sterilized water, or tap water that has been boiled for at least one minute and cooled. Never use unboiled tap water. Harmful organisms that are safe to drink can cause serious infections when introduced directly into your nasal passages.
Staying hydrated helps thin your mucus naturally. Dry indoor air, especially during winter, thickens secretions and slows drainage, so a humidifier in your bedroom can make a noticeable difference. For reflux-related drip, eating smaller meals, avoiding food within a few hours of lying down, and elevating your head while sleeping often reduce symptoms significantly.
Signs That Need Medical Attention
Most post-nasal drip resolves on its own or responds to simple home care. But certain symptoms suggest something more serious is going on. Blood in your mucus, wheezing or difficulty breathing, bad-smelling discharge, or symptoms that persist beyond 10 days despite treatment all warrant a visit to your doctor. Persistent facial pressure, swelling, or neck stiffness alongside your drip are also reasons to get evaluated sooner rather than later.
