Why Do I Have So Many Bruises on My Legs?

Frequent leg bruises are extremely common and usually harmless. Your legs are the body part most likely to get bumped during daily life, and many people bruise from minor impacts they don’t even remember. That said, certain medications, nutritional gaps, aging, and less common blood disorders can all make bruising worse or more frequent.

How Bruises Form on Your Legs

A bruise forms when tiny blood vessels called capillaries break near the skin’s surface, leaking blood into the surrounding tissue. This happens most often on the arms and legs simply because they’re the body parts that bump into things: furniture corners, doorframes, exercise equipment, even your own knees while sleeping. Harder impacts cause larger bruises, but if you bruise easily, even a light knock can leave a noticeable mark.

Many people notice bruises on their legs without any memory of injuring themselves. That doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Minor bumps throughout the day can be so insignificant that you don’t register them at the time, yet they’re enough to break a few capillaries.

Medications and Supplements That Increase Bruising

One of the most common reasons for frequent bruising is something you’re taking. Over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen reduce your blood’s ability to clot by blocking enzymes involved in the clotting process. If you take any of these regularly, even a few times a week, you’ll bruise more easily and the bruises may be larger than expected.

Prescription blood thinners designed to prevent dangerous clots have the same side effect. These medications work well for their intended purpose, but they also mean that small vessel injuries under the skin bleed more freely before sealing off.

Less obvious culprits include:

  • SSRI antidepressants, which can affect how platelets function and slow clotting
  • Corticosteroids (oral or topical), which thin the skin over time, making blood vessels easier to damage
  • Certain antibiotics, which can interfere with clotting
  • Supplements like fish oil, garlic, ginkgo, and ginseng, which have mild blood-thinning effects or interfere with platelets

If you recently started a new medication or supplement and noticed more bruising, that connection is worth bringing up with your doctor.

Aging and Skin Changes

As you get older, your skin genuinely becomes more vulnerable to bruising. Two things happen simultaneously: the skin itself thins, and you lose the protective fatty layer underneath that normally cushions blood vessels from impact. The result is that bumps and pressure that wouldn’t have left a mark at 25 can produce a dark, spreading bruise at 50 or 60.

Years of sun exposure accelerate this process. Chronic UV damage breaks down the connective tissue in the deeper layers of skin, making blood vessels more fragile. This is why bruises from aging tend to show up on areas with the most sun exposure, like the forearms and lower legs. The skin in those areas often looks visibly thinner and more translucent. These bruises are typically painless, flat, and purplish, and they can take longer to fade than a bruise caused by a clear injury.

Vitamin Deficiencies

Vitamin C plays a direct role in producing collagen, the protein that gives structure to your blood vessels, skin, and connective tissue. When you’re not getting enough vitamin C, blood vessel walls weaken and rupture more easily. Bruises from vitamin C deficiency can cover large areas of the body or show up as small purple dots under the skin. Wounds also heal more slowly because collagen production is impaired across the board.

Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting. A deficiency is less common in adults who eat a varied diet (leafy greens are the primary source), but it can develop with certain digestive conditions that reduce nutrient absorption, or with prolonged antibiotic use that disrupts gut bacteria involved in vitamin K production. Without enough of it, even minor vessel injuries bleed longer under the skin, producing larger or more persistent bruises.

Exercise and Physical Activity

If you run, play sports, or do any kind of physical training that involves your legs, those activities can absolutely cause bruises. Contact during team sports is obvious, but even non-contact exercise like running or weightlifting can create enough repeated impact or pressure to break small capillaries. Bruises from exercise often appear a day or two after the activity, which makes the connection easy to miss.

When Bruising Signals Something Deeper

Most frequent leg bruising is explained by one of the causes above. But in some cases, easy bruising is a sign of a problem with your blood’s ability to clot. Your blood relies on tiny cell fragments called platelets to seal broken vessels. When platelet counts drop below a certain threshold, you can develop bruises from minimal trauma or even spontaneously, along with tiny pinpoint red or purple dots on the skin called petechiae.

Low platelets can result from a range of conditions, from viral infections to autoimmune disorders to bone marrow problems. Inherited bleeding disorders like von Willebrand disease are another possibility, particularly if you’ve always bruised easily and have family members who do too.

Certain patterns suggest your bruising deserves medical evaluation:

  • Bruises larger than 1 cm that appear without any trauma you can recall
  • Frequent nosebleeds (more than five per year, or lasting longer than 10 minutes)
  • Bleeding gums or prolonged bleeding from minor cuts (longer than 5 minutes)
  • A family history of bleeding disorders
  • Bruising that appears alongside other bleeding, such as blood in your stool or urine

A doctor evaluating unexplained bruising will typically start with blood tests to check your platelet count, clotting function, and sometimes specific clotting factors. These tests are straightforward and can usually rule out or identify a bleeding disorder quickly.

How Bruises Heal

A normal bruise goes through a predictable color progression as your body breaks down and reabsorbs the leaked blood. It starts pinkish-red, shifts to dark blue or purple within a day or two, then gradually fades through violet, green, dark yellow, and finally pale yellow before disappearing entirely. The whole process typically takes about two weeks.

Bruises on your legs can take a bit longer to resolve than bruises elsewhere on the body, partly because gravity pulls blood downward and partly because leg circulation is naturally slower. If a bruise hasn’t faded after three to four weeks, is getting larger instead of smaller, or feels like a hard lump under the skin, that’s worth having checked.
