Why Do I Have So Much Discharge All of a Sudden?

A sudden increase in vaginal discharge is usually caused by normal hormonal shifts, especially around ovulation. On average, most women produce less than one teaspoon of discharge per day, but that amount can double or triple at certain points in your cycle, during pregnancy, or with new medications. In most cases, the change is temporary and harmless, though certain colors, textures, and smells can signal an infection worth checking out.

Your Menstrual Cycle Is the Most Common Cause

Discharge volume rises and falls predictably throughout your cycle, and the most dramatic increase happens right before ovulation, typically around day 14. Estrogen surges at this point, and your cervix responds by producing more mucus. This ovulation discharge is noticeably wetter, stretchier, and slipperier than what you see during the rest of the month. It’s often compared to raw egg whites in both look and feel, and it lasts about three to four days.

The biological purpose is straightforward: thin, wet mucus makes it easier for sperm to travel through the cervix. Once ovulation passes, discharge usually thickens, becomes more pasty or creamy, and drops in volume. So if you’ve noticed a sudden uptick that seems to resolve after a few days, you’re likely just hitting the fertile window of your cycle. Tracking the timing against your period can confirm this pattern.

Pregnancy Increases Discharge Significantly

If you’re pregnant or could be, that’s another common explanation. Hormonal shifts during pregnancy, particularly rising estrogen, increase blood flow to the pelvic area and ramp up discharge production. This type of discharge is called leukorrhea. It’s typically thin, milky white or pale yellow, and has a mild odor. It serves a protective function: clearing away dead cells and maintaining the balance of bacteria in the vagina to help prevent infections.

The increase can start early, sometimes before you even know you’re pregnant, and it tends to continue or intensify as pregnancy progresses. The discharge may feel slippery or mucus-like. As long as it stays white or pale and doesn’t come with itching, burning, or a strong smell, it’s considered normal.

Sexual Arousal and Physical Activity

Your body produces extra lubrication during sexual arousal, which can look and feel like a sudden increase in discharge. This is a normal physiological response and resolves quickly. Exercise, particularly anything involving core or pelvic movement, can also push existing discharge out more noticeably. Neither of these requires any concern.

Stress and Lifestyle Changes

Stress affects your hormones, and your hormones control discharge. A period of high stress, poor sleep, or significant weight change can shift your estrogen and progesterone levels enough to alter how much discharge you produce. Starting a new exercise routine, traveling across time zones, or even dietary changes can have the same effect. These shifts are usually temporary and correct themselves once your body adjusts.

Birth Control and Medications

Hormonal birth control works partly by thickening cervical mucus to block sperm. When you start, stop, or switch methods, the change in hormone levels can temporarily increase or decrease your discharge. Research on oral contraceptives specifically has found minimal long-term effect on vaginal or cervical discharge characteristics, meaning any change you notice when starting the pill tends to settle within a few cycles. Intrauterine devices, particularly hormonal ones, can also cause changes in discharge pattern during the adjustment period.

Antibiotics are another common trigger. They can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the vagina, sometimes leading to a noticeable change in discharge volume or consistency even if no infection develops.

When Discharge Signals an Infection

Not every increase in discharge is harmless. Three common infections change both the amount and character of vaginal discharge, and each looks slightly different.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection in women of reproductive age. It happens when the normal bacterial balance in the vagina shifts. The hallmark is a thin, grayish-white discharge with a strong fishy smell, especially noticeable after sex. BV doesn’t usually cause itching or irritation, which can make it easy to dismiss as just “more discharge than usual.”

Yeast infections produce thick, white, clumpy discharge often described as looking like cottage cheese. The key distinguishing feature is itching, along with possible swelling, redness, or small cracks in the skin around the vulva. There’s usually no strong odor.

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection that causes a thin, frothy discharge that can be clear, white, yellowish, or greenish, often with a fishy smell. It may also come with burning, irritation, or discomfort when urinating.

Signs That Need Medical Attention

You can generally tell the difference between a normal hormonal shift and something that needs treatment by paying attention to a few specific things. Discharge that warrants a visit to your provider includes any that:

  • Smells fishy or foul, rather than mild or odorless
  • Turns green, yellow, or gray
  • Looks like cottage cheese or pus
  • Comes with itching, burning, or swelling in or around the vagina
  • Accompanies pelvic pain or pain when urinating

Normal discharge ranges from clear to white to slightly off-white, feels smooth or slightly slippery, and either has no smell or a very faint one. If your discharge has increased but still fits that description, hormonal changes are the most likely explanation.

What Happens at a Doctor’s Visit

If you do go in, the evaluation is quick. Your provider will typically do a pelvic exam and collect a small sample of discharge. That sample can be tested for the specific bacteria, yeast, or parasites that cause common infections. A pH test of the vaginal wall can also help narrow things down: a pH above 4.5 suggests bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, though pH alone isn’t enough for a definitive diagnosis. Results usually come back quickly, and most vaginal infections are straightforward to treat once identified.
