Earwax production varies widely from person to person, and having a lot of it is usually a sign that your ears are doing exactly what they’re designed to do. Your ear canals contain specialized glands that produce cerumen (the technical name for earwax) as a protective barrier. The amount you produce depends on your genetics, your anatomy, your age, and what you’re putting in your ears every day.
What Earwax Actually Does
Earwax isn’t waste. It’s a complex substance made primarily of keratin (about 60% by weight), long-chain fatty acids (12 to 20%), and cholesterol (6 to 9%). That waxy, oily mixture serves several purposes: it lubricates and moistens the ear canal so the skin doesn’t dry out and crack, it traps dust and debris before they reach the eardrum, and it repels water thanks to its high lipid content.
Earwax also functions as an antimicrobial barrier. It contains proteins involved in local immune defense, including one called zinc-alpha-2-glycoprotein, that help fight off bacteria and fungi before they can establish infections deeper in the ear canal. So when you notice a lot of wax, your body may simply be running a well-oiled defense system.
Your Genes Set Your Baseline
One of the biggest factors in how much earwax you produce, and what it looks like, is a single gene called ABCC11. This gene codes for a transporter protein inside the glands that secrete earwax. A single letter change in your DNA at one spot in this gene determines whether you produce wet or dry earwax.
People with the “G” variant produce wet earwax, which is sticky, golden-brown, and more abundant. Those with an “A” on both copies of the gene produce dry earwax, which is grey, flaky, and lighter in volume. The reason: in people with dry earwax, the transporter protein can’t bind to a specific sugar molecule, so the cell breaks it down before it can do its job of releasing secretions.
The vast majority of people of European or African descent have wet earwax. Most East Asian people have the dry type. Among Pacific Islanders, South and Central Asians, and Indigenous populations of North America, the split is roughly 30 to 50% dry. If you inherited wet-type earwax from both sides of your family, you’ll naturally produce more visible wax throughout your life. That’s completely normal for your biology.
Earbuds and Hearing Aids Block Self-Cleaning
Your ears have a built-in conveyor belt. The skin of the ear canal slowly migrates outward, and jaw movements from chewing and talking help push old wax toward the opening of the ear, where it dries up and falls out. You rarely notice this process because it works quietly in the background.
Wearing earbuds, hearing aids, or earplugs for long stretches disrupts this system. The device physically blocks the outward migration of wax, so it accumulates deeper in the canal instead of working its way out. If you wear earbuds most of the day and feel like you’re constantly dealing with wax buildup, the earbuds themselves are likely the main culprit. The size of your ear canals and how active your oil glands are also play a role in how quickly buildup becomes noticeable.
Aging Changes the Texture
As you get older, the glands inside the ear canal produce drier wax. Drier wax doesn’t slide out of the canal as easily, so it’s more likely to accumulate and eventually form a blockage. This is why earwax problems become increasingly common with age. Older adults in care facilities are especially prone to impaction, partly because drier wax combines with less jaw movement (from softer diets or reduced chewing) and less frequent ear hygiene assistance.
Anatomy You Can’t Control
Some people are simply built for wax problems. Narrow ear canals, whether you were born with them or they narrowed over time, give wax less room to migrate outward. Bony growths in the ear canal (called exostoses or osteomas, common in people who spend years swimming in cold water) create physical obstacles that trap wax behind them. If your ear canals are unusually curved or narrow, you may deal with excess wax no matter what you do, and professional removal on a regular schedule might be the most practical solution.
Signs That Buildup Has Become a Blockage
Producing a lot of earwax isn’t automatically a problem. It becomes one when wax accumulates faster than your ear can clear it, forming a plug that presses against the eardrum or fills the canal. Symptoms of a true blockage include:
- Muffled hearing or hearing loss in the affected ear
- A feeling of fullness or pressure, like your ear is plugged
- Tinnitus, a ringing or buzzing sound
- Earache or dull pain
- Dizziness
- Itchiness deep in the canal
- Odor or discharge, which can signal infection behind the blockage
These symptoms often come on gradually, so you might not realize how much hearing you’ve lost until the wax is removed and sound suddenly seems louder and clearer.
What Helps and What Makes It Worse
Cotton swabs are the single most common reason people push wax deeper into the canal, compacting it against the eardrum and turning a manageable amount of wax into a hard blockage. The swab removes a thin layer from the outer canal, which feels satisfying, but rams the rest further in.
For softening wax at home, a few drops of mineral oil, olive oil, or saline solution in the ear canal can help loosen buildup so it migrates out on its own. Over-the-counter drops containing carbamide peroxide (sold under brand names like Debrox) work by gently fizzing and breaking apart hardened wax. Use these only as directed, since the active ingredients can irritate the delicate skin of the eardrum and ear canal. Don’t use any ear drops if you have an active ear infection or a perforated eardrum.
If home softening doesn’t clear things up after a few days, or if you’re experiencing hearing loss or pain, a clinician can remove the wax using gentle irrigation or specialized instruments. For people with narrow canals, bony growths, or a history of ear surgery, professional removal is safer than any DIY approach. Some people with chronic overproduction benefit from scheduled cleanings every six to twelve months to stay ahead of the buildup cycle.
