Stinky farts come down to one thing: sulfur. Specifically, your gut bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide, the same compound responsible for the smell of rotten eggs, as they break down certain foods in your large intestine. The average person passes gas about 15 times a day, and most of that gas is actually odorless. The smell only shows up when sulfur-containing compounds are part of the mix.

How much sulfur your gut bacteria produce depends on what you eat, which bacteria live in your gut, how well you digest certain foods, and sometimes whether you’re taking specific medications. Most of the time, smelly gas is completely normal. But persistent changes in odor can occasionally point to something worth paying attention to.

What Makes Gas Smell

Most of the gas in your intestines is a blend of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and sometimes methane. None of these have any smell. The odor comes from trace sulfur gases, primarily hydrogen sulfide, that your gut bacteria release as a byproduct of breaking down sulfur-containing compounds in food. Even tiny amounts of hydrogen sulfide are potent enough to make an entire room uncomfortable.

Your large intestine houses a group of bacteria called sulfate-reducing bacteria. The most well-known of these belong to a genus called Desulfovibrio. These bacteria use sulfate (a form of sulfur found in many foods) as fuel for their metabolism, and the end product of that process is hydrogen sulfide, which gets released into your intestine and eventually exits as gas. The more sulfate and sulfur-containing amino acids you feed these bacteria, the more hydrogen sulfide they produce, and the worse things smell.

Foods That Make It Worse

The biggest dietary drivers of smelly gas are foods high in sulfur. These include:

  • Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and kale
  • Alliums: garlic, onions, leeks, and shallots
  • Animal proteins: eggs, red meat, and dairy (which contain sulfur-rich amino acids)
  • Legumes: beans, lentils, and chickpeas
  • Dried fruits and wine (which often contain added sulfites)

These foods aren’t unhealthy. Many of them are nutritional powerhouses. But they provide the raw material that sulfate-reducing bacteria thrive on. If you’ve recently increased your intake of any of these foods, that alone can explain a noticeable change in gas odor.

Fiber also plays a role, though it affects gas volume more than smell. Soluble, fermentable fibers like inulin (found in chicory root, wheat, and many fiber supplements), oligosaccharides, and resistant starches are rapidly broken down by gut bacteria, producing significant amounts of gas along with bloating and flatulence. Insoluble fibers like wheat bran, on the other hand, are poorly fermented and produce much less gas. If you’ve recently started a fiber supplement or dramatically increased your vegetable intake, the extra volume of gas can make even a normal level of sulfur compounds more noticeable.

Food Intolerances and Malabsorption

When your body can’t properly absorb certain carbohydrates, those sugars travel intact to your large intestine, where bacteria ferment them aggressively. This produces both extra gas and, depending on the bacterial mix, extra sulfur compounds.

Lactose intolerance is the most common example. If you lack enough of the enzyme that breaks down milk sugar, that lactose arrives in your colon undigested. Bacteria ferment it, producing hydrogen and other gases. Fructose malabsorption works the same way. The oligosaccharides in wheat, rye, onion, garlic, and legumes are also poorly absorbed because the human gut simply doesn’t produce the enzymes needed to break their molecular bonds. In healthy people, these cause some gas. In people with sensitive digestive systems, the fermentation is more intense and the resulting gas tends to smell worse.

If your smelly gas consistently shows up after eating dairy, wheat products, or foods high in fructose, an intolerance could be the reason. Breath testing can help identify whether you’re malabsorbing specific sugars by measuring the hydrogen your gut bacteria produce after you consume them.

Medical Conditions Worth Knowing About

Persistently foul-smelling gas, especially when paired with other symptoms like chronic diarrhea, greasy or pale stools, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal pain, can be a sign of a malabsorption syndrome. In these conditions, your small intestine fails to properly absorb nutrients, sending a larger than normal load of undigested material to the bacteria in your colon.

Common causes of malabsorption include celiac disease (an immune reaction to gluten that damages the small intestine lining), Crohn’s disease, and pancreatic insufficiency, where the pancreas doesn’t produce enough digestive enzymes. Lactose intolerance also falls into this category. Diagnosis typically involves stool tests, blood work, or imaging, depending on what your doctor suspects. If your gas odor has changed significantly and you’re experiencing other digestive symptoms alongside it, that pattern is worth investigating.

Medications and Supplements

Several common medications and supplements can increase gas production or change its character. Iron supplements are a frequent culprit, along with multivitamins that contain iron. Fiber supplements like psyllium or methylcellulose can ramp up bacterial fermentation, particularly when you first start taking them. Opioid pain medications slow gut motility, giving bacteria more time to ferment food and produce sulfur gases. Antacids, anti-diarrheal medications, and even aspirin can also contribute to increased gas and bloating.

If you recently started a new medication or supplement and noticed a change in gas odor, the timing is probably not a coincidence. In most cases, the effect is harmless but annoying.

How to Reduce the Smell

Since the odor comes from sulfur, the most direct approach is reducing the amount of sulfur-containing food reaching your colon bacteria. You don’t need to eliminate cruciferous vegetables or protein entirely. Instead, try cutting back on the highest-sulfur foods for a week or two and see if the smell improves. This gives you a practical way to identify your personal triggers.

Eating more slowly and chewing thoroughly helps your small intestine absorb more nutrients before they reach the colon, leaving less for bacteria to ferment. Cooking cruciferous vegetables rather than eating them raw also breaks down some of the sulfur compounds before they ever reach your gut bacteria.

If you’ve recently increased your fiber intake, give your body two to three weeks to adjust. Starting with smaller amounts and gradually increasing tends to produce less gas than jumping straight to high doses.

One over-the-counter option with direct evidence for reducing gas odor is bismuth subsalicylate (the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol). Bismuth binds to hydrogen sulfide in the colon, forming a compound that doesn’t smell. In a study of healthy volunteers who took it four times daily for three to seven days, hydrogen sulfide release from stool samples dropped significantly. It won’t reduce the volume of gas you pass, but it can take the edge off the smell. That said, bismuth turns your tongue and stool black, which is harmless but surprising if you’re not expecting it.

Probiotics are widely marketed for digestive health, but evidence that they specifically reduce gas odor is limited. They may help by shifting the balance of bacterial species in your gut over time, but results vary widely from person to person.

When Smelly Gas Is Just Normal

Passing gas anywhere from 3 to 40 times a day falls within the normal range, with 15 being a reasonable average. Some of those will smell, and some won’t. A day of particularly odorous gas after a meal heavy in garlic, onions, or beans is your gut bacteria doing exactly what they’re supposed to do. The sulfur compounds they produce, while unpleasant for everyone in the room, actually play roles in gut lining health at low concentrations.

The time to pay closer attention is when the smell changes dramatically and stays that way for weeks, or when it comes with other symptoms like pain, bloating that doesn’t resolve, changes in stool consistency, or unintentional weight loss. On its own, though, smelly gas is one of the most common and least concerning digestive complaints there is.
