Regressions reflect difficulty with higher-level language processing, not a failure of basic reading ability. Other practical adjustments that help:

  • Read when your brain is fresh. If you do your most demanding reading late at night when you’re already tired, you’re working against your biology. Morning or early afternoon is better for most people.
  • Slow down deliberately. Speed-reading strategies often backfire for complex material. Slowing your pace by even 10 to 20 percent gives your working memory more time to integrate each sentence before the next one arrives.
  • Annotate or take notes. Writing a one-sentence summary in the margin forces you to process the meaning actively. It also gives you something to glance back at instead of rereading the full passage.
