Unexplained bruises on your legs are common, and most of the time they result from minor bumps you didn’t notice, thin skin, or medications that affect clotting. Your legs are especially prone to bruising because they’re more likely to knock into things throughout the day, and gravity pulls blood downward into lower-leg tissue after even tiny capillary injuries. That said, frequent or unusual bruising can sometimes signal a nutritional deficiency, a blood disorder, or another condition worth investigating.
Medications That Cause Easy Bruising
One of the most common culprits is something already in your medicine cabinet. Pain relievers like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen reduce your blood’s ability to clot. When you bump your leg, even lightly, small blood vessels near the skin break open. Normally a clot forms quickly and limits the leak. These medications slow that process, so more blood pools under the skin before the vessel seals, leaving a larger or more visible bruise.
Blood-thinning medications prescribed for heart conditions or blood clots, such as warfarin, apixaban, and rivaroxaban, have the same effect at a stronger level. If you take any of these and notice more bruising than usual, that’s a predictable side effect rather than a mystery. Corticosteroids (often prescribed for asthma, allergies, or autoimmune conditions) work differently: they thin the skin itself over time, making blood vessels closer to the surface easier to damage.
Aging and Sun-Damaged Skin
If you’re over 50, the explanation may be structural. As you age, the connective tissue in your skin breaks down and the protective fat layer beneath it shrinks. Blood vessels become more fragile and sit closer to the surface, so everyday contact that wouldn’t have left a mark at 30 now produces a visible bruise. Years of sun exposure accelerate this process. The result is a condition sometimes called senile purpura: flat, dark purple bruises that appear mostly on the forearms and legs, often without any remembered injury. The skin in these areas typically looks thinner and more translucent than surrounding tissue.
Nutritional Deficiencies
Vitamin C plays a key role in building collagen, the protein that strengthens your blood vessel walls. When you don’t get enough, those walls weaken, and small vessels rupture more easily under normal pressure. You don’t need to have full-blown scurvy for this to matter. Even a moderate shortfall, common in people with very restricted diets or poor absorption, can increase bruising on the legs and gums.
Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting. Your body needs it to produce several of the proteins that form clots at injury sites. A deficiency means clots form more slowly, and minor vessel damage leads to larger bruises. Vitamin K deficiency is less common in adults who eat a varied diet (leafy greens are a major source), but it can develop with certain digestive conditions that impair fat absorption, since vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin.
Intense Exercise and Physical Strain
If you’ve recently started a new workout routine, increased your running mileage, or done heavy leg work at the gym, bruising on the calves and thighs can follow. Strenuous muscle activity, particularly in warm conditions, can overwhelm the temperature regulation in your calf muscles, reducing blood return through the veins and causing blood to pool. This leads to inflammation and small-vessel damage in the lower legs. The bruises tend to appear a day or two after the activity and resolve on their own within a week or so.
Liver Disease and Clotting Problems
Your liver manufactures most of the proteins your blood needs to clot. When the liver is damaged, whether from chronic alcohol use, hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or cirrhosis, it produces fewer clotting factors and can also cause a drop in platelet count. Platelets are the cell fragments that rush to a broken vessel and form the initial plug. A healthy platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 400,000 per microliter of blood. When it drops below 150,000, a condition called thrombocytopenia, bruising becomes noticeably easier.
Liver-related bruising usually doesn’t appear in isolation. You’d typically also notice fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes, swelling in the abdomen or ankles, or a general feeling of being unwell.
Bleeding Disorders Like Von Willebrand Disease
Von Willebrand disease is the most common inherited bleeding disorder, and many people don’t know they have it until they start paying attention to their bruising patterns. The CDC notes that people with this condition tend to bruise with very little or no trauma, bruise one to four times per month, and develop bruises larger than a quarter that are raised rather than flat. If that description fits, especially if you also have heavy periods, prolonged bleeding from cuts, or a family history of unusual bleeding, a blood test can confirm the diagnosis.
When Bruising May Signal Something Serious
A single bruise on your shin, even a big one, is rarely cause for alarm. The pattern matters more than any individual bruise. There are specific signs that point toward a condition requiring medical evaluation:
- Location: Bruises on the back, abdomen, or upper thighs are more concerning than shin bruises, because those areas don’t get bumped as often in daily life.
- Appearance: Large purple spots with clear, well-defined edges in someone younger than 65 deserve attention. Bruises that keep getting larger over days rather than fading are also unusual.
- Tiny red dots: Clusters of small red spots (called petechiae) on the lower legs and feet look like a rash but are actually pinpoint bleeds. They’re associated with low platelet counts and certain blood cancers like leukemia.
- Healing time: A normal bruise shifts from purple to brown to yellow over roughly 10 days. Bruises that haven’t faded after two weeks are worth noting.
- Systemic symptoms: Fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, unintentional weight loss, or joint swelling alongside frequent bruising suggest something beyond fragile skin.
In leukemia, bruises tend to keep forming and spreading. They’re flat and often accompanied by those clusters of tiny red spots on the feet and ankles. A single leukemia bruise looks identical to any ordinary bruise, so the distinguishing feature is the pattern: many bruises in areas without injury, appearing continuously rather than after a known bump.
What to Pay Attention To
Start by considering the simplest explanations. Are you taking ibuprofen or aspirin regularly? Have you started a new exercise routine? Are you eating enough fruits and vegetables? These account for the majority of unexplained leg bruises. If you can identify a likely cause and the bruising improves when you address it, you probably have your answer.
If bruises are appearing frequently in unusual locations, growing in size, or showing up alongside other symptoms like fatigue, bleeding gums, heavy periods, or weight loss, those are the patterns worth bringing to a doctor. A basic blood test can check your platelet count, clotting function, and liver enzymes, which together cover most of the medical causes of easy bruising.
