Frequent, smelly gas comes down to two things: what you’re eating and what your gut bacteria are doing with it. The average person passes gas about 14 times a day, producing roughly two liters of intestinal gas in 24 hours. If you’re well above that number, or if the smell has become noticeably worse, something in your diet or digestion has shifted the balance.

Why Gas Smells Bad

Most of the gas your body produces is actually odorless. It’s made up of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and sometimes methane. The stink comes from a small fraction of the total volume: sulfur-containing gases, especially hydrogen sulfide, the compound responsible for that rotten-egg smell.

Certain bacteria in your gut produce hydrogen sulfide by breaking down sulfur-containing amino acids (found in protein-rich foods) for energy. Other bacteria, particularly a group called Desulfovibrio, generate it by processing sulfate, a compound found naturally in many foods and even drinking water. When you eat a lot of sulfur-rich food, these bacteria have more raw material to work with, and the result is gas that clears a room.

Foods That Make It Worse

The biggest dietary drivers of smelly gas fall into a few categories:

  • High-protein foods: Turkey, beef, eggs, fish, and chicken are rich in methionine and cysteine, two sulfur-containing amino acids. Eggs are a particularly common culprit. Plant sources like lentils, chickpeas, oats, and walnuts also contain these amino acids.
  • Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, arugula, and radishes contain sulfur compounds that gut bacteria readily ferment.
  • Allium vegetables: Garlic, onions, leeks, scallions, and shallots are high in sulfur and tend to produce particularly pungent gas.
  • Beans and legumes: These contain complex carbohydrates your small intestine can’t fully break down, so bacteria in the large intestine ferment them, producing both volume and odor.

If you recently changed your diet to include more of these foods, that alone could explain the uptick. A week of heavy broccoli and egg consumption will produce noticeably different gas than a week of rice and chicken breast.

Swallowed Air Adds Volume

Smelly gas gets more noticeable when there’s simply more of it. Swallowing excess air, a habit sometimes called aerophagia, pushes extra gas into your gut. Common causes include eating too fast, talking while eating, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, using straws, drinking carbonated beverages, and smoking. Everyone swallows some air while chewing and breathing, but these habits can significantly increase the amount that collects in your intestines and needs to come out.

Swallowed air on its own is mostly odorless. But the extra volume means you’re passing gas more frequently, and if sulfur-producing bacteria are active at the same time, each episode carries that smell with it.

Food Intolerances and Malabsorption

If your body can’t properly absorb certain sugars, bacteria in the large intestine ferment them instead. Lactose intolerance is the most common example. When you lack the enzyme to break down lactose (the sugar in dairy), it passes undigested into the colon where bacteria feast on it, producing gas, bloating, and sometimes explosive diarrhea.

Fructose malabsorption works the same way. People who absorb fructose poorly may notice worsening gas after eating fruit, honey, or foods sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. Sugar alcohols like sorbitol and xylitol, common in sugar-free gum and candies, are poorly absorbed by almost everyone and reliably cause gas.

If you notice a pattern where gas gets worse after specific foods, keeping a food diary for a week or two can help you identify the trigger. Try removing the suspected food for a few days and see if the smell improves.

Bacterial Overgrowth in the Small Intestine

When bacteria that normally live in the large intestine start growing in the small intestine, they encounter food much earlier in the digestive process and ferment it before your body has a chance to absorb it. This condition, called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), produces excessive gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and often foul-smelling flatulence.

SIBO symptoms overlap heavily with irritable bowel syndrome, but the key difference is that bacterial overgrowth can be verified with a breath test that measures hydrogen and methane levels. If levels are above a certain threshold, it confirms an overabundance of gas-producing bacteria. SIBO is treatable, typically with a course of targeted antibiotics, so identifying it matters.

Your Gut Bacteria May Have Shifted

Your microbiome isn’t static. Antibiotics, illness, stress, travel, and major dietary changes can all alter which bacterial species dominate your gut. If sulfate-reducing bacteria like Desulfovibrio become more abundant, or if bacteria like Fusobacterium that break down sulfur-containing amino acids gain a foothold, your gas will smell worse even if your diet hasn’t changed much.

Diets high in animal protein tend to promote sulfur-metabolizing bacteria, while diets higher in fiber feed bacteria that produce less odorous gases. This is one reason people who switch from a plant-heavy diet to a high-protein diet often notice their gas becomes significantly more pungent within days.

Practical Ways to Reduce Smelly Gas

Start with the most common causes first. Slow down when you eat, and avoid chewing gum or drinking through straws. Cut back on the sulfur-heavy foods listed above for a few days and see if the smell improves. If you eat a lot of dairy, try removing it for a week to test for lactose intolerance.

Increasing fiber gradually (not all at once) can help shift your gut bacteria toward species that produce less hydrogen sulfide. Sudden large increases in fiber will temporarily make gas worse before it gets better, so add a serving or two per day rather than overhauling your diet overnight.

If reducing dietary triggers and eating habits doesn’t help, or if your gas comes with stomach pain, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, persistent diarrhea, oily or bloody stools, or fever, those are signs that something beyond diet is going on. Conditions like SIBO, inflammatory bowel disease, or pancreatic insufficiency can all cause persistent foul-smelling gas and are worth investigating with a healthcare provider.
