Why Do I Keep Getting Charley Horses: Causes & Fixes

Recurring charley horses usually come down to one or more fixable problems: dehydration, low electrolytes, muscle fatigue, or spending too much time in one position. About 50 to 60 percent of adults experience nocturnal leg cramps, and the frequency increases with age. But when cramps keep coming back, your body is signaling something specific, and figuring out which trigger applies to you is the key to making them stop.

What Happens Inside a Cramping Muscle

A charley horse isn’t just a muscle tightening up on its own. The problem starts in your spinal cord, where motor neurons fire involuntarily at high frequency, locking the muscle into contraction. Normally, sensors in your tendons called Golgi tendon organs act as a safety brake. When they detect too much tension, they send a signal back to the spinal cord to ease off. During a cramp, that braking system fails. Excitatory signals from the muscle overwhelm the inhibitory signals from the tendon sensors, and the muscle contracts hard with no off switch.

This is why cramps tend to hit suddenly and feel so intense. The muscle is receiving a flood of “contract” signals and almost none of the usual “relax” signals. Fatigue, dehydration, and mineral shortages all make this imbalance worse.

Dehydration and Electrolyte Shortages

Your muscles depend on a precise balance of minerals to contract and relax properly. Magnesium, potassium, and calcium all play roles in regulating nerve signals to muscle fibers. When any of these drop too low, your motor neurons become more excitable, meaning they fire more easily and with less control. Normal magnesium levels fall between 1.46 and 2.68 mg/dL, and even mild deficiency can cause muscle spasms, cramps, and numbness in the hands and feet.

Dehydration compounds the problem. When you lose fluid through sweat, you also lose sodium and other electrolytes. The CDC notes that heat cramps specifically result from salt and moisture depletion during strenuous activity. But you don’t have to be exercising in extreme heat. Drinking too little water on an ordinary day, having a few alcoholic drinks, or sweating through a warm night can all tip the balance. A general hydration target: multiply your body weight in pounds by 0.67 to get your daily ounces of water, then add 12 ounces for every 30 minutes of exercise.

Muscle Fatigue and Inactivity

Both overuse and underuse can trigger recurring cramps. When you push a muscle past its endurance, fatigue disrupts the feedback loop between the muscle and spinal cord. The tendon sensors that normally inhibit excessive contraction stop working effectively, leaving the muscle vulnerable to involuntary spasms.

Sedentary behavior causes cramps through a different path. Some researchers hypothesize that modern life no longer requires the repetitive squatting and stretching that historically kept leg tendons and muscles flexible. A person who sits most of the day and then strains during a sudden burst of activity is a prime candidate for charley horses. Starting a new exercise routine, gardening after months of inactivity, or even an unusually long walk can all set off cramps in deconditioned muscles.

Why Cramps Strike at Night

Nighttime charley horses are extremely common and have their own set of triggers. When you’re lying in bed, your foot naturally points downward, which shortens the calf muscle. In that already shortened position, an uninhibited nerve impulse can easily push the muscle into a full cramp. This is why calf cramps are the most frequent type people experience at night.

Sleeping also means hours without water, so you’re mildly dehydrated by the early morning. If you exercised that day, your muscles may still be fatigued. And poor circulation from lying still compounds everything. The combination of a shortened muscle, mild dehydration, and residual fatigue creates the perfect setup for a 3 a.m. charley horse.

Medications That Cause Cramps

Several common medications increase cramp frequency. Statins, the cholesterol-lowering drugs taken by millions of people, are the most well-known culprit. In real-world use, 15 to 20 percent of patients report muscle pain and cramping, with women affected more often than men. Diuretics (water pills) are another frequent cause because they increase fluid and electrolyte loss through urine, depleting the very minerals your muscles need. If your cramps started or worsened after beginning a new medication, that connection is worth exploring with your prescriber. With statins, options include lowering the dose or switching to a different formulation.

Circulation and Nerve Problems

When cramps keep recurring in a specific leg, especially during walking or exercise, poor blood flow may be the cause. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) narrows the arteries that supply your legs, usually from a buildup of cholesterol-based plaque. The hallmark symptom is cramping in the calf, thigh, or hip that starts with activity and stops with rest. In severe cases, the cramping can wake you from sleep or occur even while lying down.

Nerve damage or compression can also produce chronic cramps. People with conditions affecting the lower motor neurons, including lumbar spinal stenosis and parkinsonism, experience cramps at higher rates. The damaged nerves fire erratically, producing the same kind of involuntary high-frequency discharge that characterizes any charley horse, just more often and with a structural cause behind it.

Pregnancy and Hormonal Changes

Leg cramps are one of the most common complaints during pregnancy, particularly in the later months. Roughly 30 to 50 percent of women experience cramps at least twice a week during the third trimester. The causes stack up: weight gain increases the load on leg muscles, postural changes shift how those muscles are used, and ligaments loosen throughout the body. Women who have been pregnant before tend to experience cramps more frequently, likely because the cumulative physical changes are more pronounced with each pregnancy.

How to Stop a Cramp in Progress

When a charley horse hits your calf, keep your leg straight and pull the top of your foot toward your face. You can also stand up, put your weight on the cramped leg, and press down firmly. Both methods work by forcibly lengthening the contracted muscle, which reactivates those tendon sensors and tells your spinal cord to dial back the contraction signal. For a cramp in the back of the thigh, the same weight-bearing technique helps. Applying a warm towel or heating pad after the acute spasm passes can ease the lingering soreness.

Reducing Cramp Frequency Over Time

Preventing recurring charley horses means addressing whichever triggers apply to you. If dehydration is likely, increase your daily water intake and pay extra attention on days you exercise or spend time in heat. If your diet is low in leafy greens, nuts, bananas, or dairy, you may not be getting enough magnesium, potassium, or calcium.

Regular stretching makes a measurable difference, particularly for nighttime cramps. Stretching your calves and hamstrings before bed lengthens the muscle fibers and resets the tension feedback system. Even a few minutes of standing calf stretches (leaning against a wall with one leg extended behind you) can reduce the frequency of overnight episodes.

If you sit for long periods, short movement breaks throughout the day help keep muscles from stiffening into cramp-prone states. And if your cramps are persistent, always in the same limb, accompanied by weakness or skin changes, or happen alongside swelling or weak pulses, those patterns point toward circulation or nerve issues that need evaluation beyond lifestyle changes.
