But the habit exists on a spectrum, and for a small percentage of people, it can tip into something that feels compulsive or disruptive.

When you’re not focused on a specific task, your brain doesn’t go idle. It activates a network of regions called the default mode network, which is essentially your mind’s autopilot for internal thought. This network lights up during daydreaming, mental time travel, and scenario building. The scenarios you create often fall into predictable categories: social interactions you want to prepare for, conflicts you’re trying to resolve, dangers you want to avoid, or goals you’re working toward. Each of these maps directly onto problems that mattered for survival and reproduction throughout human history.

Emotional Regulation and Escapism

Not all scenario-building is about planning. A large portion of it serves an emotional purpose. When you’re stressed, bored, lonely, or overwhelmed, your brain may generate scenarios as a way to regulate how you feel. Imagining a better version of a conversation that went badly, fantasizing about a future where things work out, or replaying a moment so you can “win” it this time are all forms of emotional processing.

This kind of mental escapism isn’t inherently negative. It can function as a genuine coping strategy, providing distraction during emotionally intense situations or helping you suppress difficult feelings long enough to function. During the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers found that escapist mental activity was linked to reduced loneliness in anxious individuals and helped preserve mental health by maintaining a sense of social connection even during isolation. The key factor is whether the escapism supplements your real life or starts replacing it.

The Link to Creativity and Problem Solving

If you’ve ever solved a problem while showering or had a great idea pop up during a walk, you’ve experienced the creative side of scenario-building. When your mind wanders freely, it restructures how you think about problems, weakens your fixation on irrelevant details, and spreads activation to related concepts you wouldn’t reach through deliberate thinking. This process has been linked to insight and sudden “aha” moments.

One study on creative writing found that mind-wandering during a break from a task predicted measurable improvements in creative output when participants returned to work. It’s worth noting that some people have vivid, immersive daydreaming without any distress or impairment. The line between “rich inner life” and “maladaptive daydreaming” isn’t about the vividness or complexity of your scenarios. It’s about whether they cause you significant distress or get in the way of living your actual life.

Managing Excessive Scenario-Building

If your mental scenarios feel excessive but not debilitating, a few practical approaches can help. Structured scheduling of your free time reduces the unoccupied mental space where daydreaming tends to flourish. One clinical case study found that simply shifting a bedtime from midnight to 10 p.m. reduced the window for compulsive daydreaming. Filling downtime with engaging activities, whether social, physical, or creative, gives your default mode network something to process besides invented scenarios.

These typically involve identifying what triggers your daydreaming episodes, keeping a thought record to notice patterns, and gradually restructuring the automatic thoughts that pull you into extended fantasy.
