Waking up with unexplained bruises on your legs is common and usually harmless. Most of the time, you bumped into something during the day and didn’t notice, or you moved against furniture, a bed frame, or a partner while sleeping. But when it keeps happening, the cause often goes deeper: medications, nutritional gaps, hormonal factors, or less commonly, an underlying medical condition that affects how your blood clots.
Minor Injuries You Don’t Remember
Your legs take more low-level impact than any other part of your body. Bumping a shin on a coffee table, kneeling against a hard surface, or knocking into a doorframe can break tiny blood vessels under the skin without producing enough pain for you to register the moment. Hours later, blood pools under the surface and a bruise appears. Because these injuries are so minor, you’ve often forgotten them entirely by morning.
Nighttime movement adds another layer. During certain sleep stages, your body is normally paralyzed to prevent you from acting out dreams. In REM sleep behavior disorder, that paralysis doesn’t kick in, and you may punch, kick, flail your arms, or even jump out of bed while dreaming. People with this condition can injure themselves or a sleeping partner without waking up or remembering anything. Restless legs, frequent position changes, or simply sleeping in a bed with a wooden frame or a restless partner can also produce bruises overnight.
Medications and Supplements That Increase Bruising
If you take any blood-thinning medication, easy bruising is a predictable side effect. Prescription anticoagulants reduce your blood’s ability to form clots. Anti-platelet medications work differently but have the same practical result: blood leaks from damaged vessels longer before sealing off, producing larger or more frequent bruises.
Over-the-counter painkillers are a less obvious culprit. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen all interfere with platelet function. If you take one of these regularly for headaches, joint pain, or general aches, that alone can explain why bruises show up more easily. Corticosteroids, sometimes prescribed for asthma or autoimmune conditions, thin the skin over time, making the blood vessels underneath more vulnerable to even light contact.
Certain supplements also play a role. Ginkgo biloba has a blood-thinning effect that increases bruising risk. Fish oil and vitamin E supplements can do the same. If you started a new supplement and noticed more bruises appearing, the timing is worth paying attention to. Some antibiotics and antidepressants can also affect clotting, so any new medication is worth considering as a trigger.
How Skin and Age Factor In
As you get older, the supportive tissue beneath your skin gradually thins out. Blood vessels lose their cushioning and break more easily, even from pressure that wouldn’t have left a mark ten years earlier. This is sometimes called senile purpura, and it’s extremely common in older adults. The bruises tend to appear on areas with sun-damaged skin, particularly the forearms and hands, but legs are also vulnerable.
These age-related bruises often look dark purple and can appear without any trauma you can identify. They typically resolve over several days but leave behind a brownish discoloration from iron deposits in the skin. The discoloration can persist long after the bruise itself has healed. This process is not dangerous, but it does mean your threshold for visible bruising gets lower with each passing decade.
Women Bruise More Easily Than Men
If you’re a woman, you’re more likely to bruise from the same level of impact compared to a man. Part of this comes down to skin structure: women tend to have thinner skin with less collagen density, which means blood vessels sit closer to the surface and have less padding around them. Hormonal fluctuations, particularly estrogen levels during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or hormone replacement therapy, also appear to influence how easily blood vessels are damaged. This doesn’t mean the bruises are a problem. It means the threshold for getting one is simply lower.
Nutritional Deficiencies That Cause Bruising
Two vitamins play direct roles in keeping your blood vessels intact and your blood clotting properly. Vitamin C is essential for producing collagen, the protein that strengthens blood vessel walls. When vitamin C levels drop too low, those walls weaken and break more easily, leading to bruising, slow wound healing, and in severe cases, bleeding gums. You don’t need to have full-blown scurvy for this to matter. Even a modest shortfall, common in people who eat very little fruit or vegetables, can make bruising noticeably worse.
Vitamin K is the other key player. Your body needs it to form blood clots. Without enough vitamin K, bleeding from even tiny vessel damage takes longer to stop, which means more blood pools under the skin. Most adults get sufficient vitamin K from leafy greens, but people on very restrictive diets, those with digestive conditions that impair nutrient absorption, or heavy alcohol users can fall short.
Bleeding Disorders and Clotting Problems
Von Willebrand disease is the most common inherited bleeding disorder, and many people who have it don’t know it. The condition involves low levels or poor function of a protein needed for platelets to stick together and seal off damaged blood vessels. The most recognizable symptom is bleeding more than expected: heavy periods, prolonged bleeding after dental work, nosebleeds, and easy or lumpy bruising. More severe forms can cause sudden bleeding into joints.
The gene responsible for this condition is passed through families, so if a parent or sibling bruises unusually easily or has a history of heavy bleeding, that’s a meaningful clue. In rare cases, people develop an acquired form of the disease later in life without any family history.
Thrombocytopenia, or a low platelet count, is another possibility. A normal platelet count falls between 150,000 and 400,000 per microliter of blood. When counts drop below 50,000, you’re at increased risk of bleeding from everyday activities, and spontaneous bruising becomes more likely. Low platelets can result from infections, autoimmune conditions, certain medications, or bone marrow problems.
Liver Disease and Bruising
Your liver manufactures most of the proteins your blood needs to clot. When the liver is damaged, whether from heavy alcohol use, fatty liver disease, hepatitis, or other conditions, its ability to produce these clotting factors drops. The result is that even minor bumps produce outsized bruises, and bleeding from cuts takes longer to stop. Liver-related bruising rarely shows up in isolation. It typically comes alongside other signs like fatigue, yellowing skin, abdominal swelling, or dark urine.
What a Normal Bruise Looks Like
A typical bruise starts out pinkish-red, then shifts to dark blue or purple within a day. Over the following days it fades through violet, green, and dark yellow before turning pale yellow and disappearing entirely. The full cycle takes about two weeks. If your bruises follow this pattern, resolve on their own, and don’t appear in unusual locations like your torso, face, or back, they’re almost certainly benign.
Signs That Something More Serious Is Going On
Most unexplained leg bruises are nothing to worry about. But certain patterns deserve attention. Bruises that appear on your trunk, back, or face (not just your shins and thighs) are less likely to come from accidental bumps. Very large bruises from minimal or no contact, or bruises that keep appearing in new locations, suggest a clotting problem worth investigating.
Look at the full picture. Bruising combined with persistent fatigue, frequent infections, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, swollen lymph nodes, or bone pain can be early signs of leukemia or other blood cancers. Tiny red or purple pinpoint spots on the skin, called petechiae, are another red flag. These are not bruises but rather signs of bleeding under the skin from very small vessels, and they often indicate a platelet problem. Nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or unusually heavy periods alongside easy bruising strengthen the case for getting blood work done. A simple complete blood count can check your platelet levels and flag most serious causes quickly.
