Why Do Kittens Get Eye Infections So Often?

Kittens get eye infections far more often than adult cats because their immune systems are still developing and their eyes are physically vulnerable during the first weeks of life. The most common culprits are feline herpesvirus and certain bacteria that a kitten can pick up from its mother during birth or from other cats in the household. Understanding what’s behind these infections helps you spot problems early, before they cause lasting damage.

Their Immune Systems Have a Gap

Newborn kittens rely on antibodies passed from their mother through her first milk. These maternal antibodies act as a temporary shield against infections. But that protection fades, and by around eight weeks of age it’s largely gone. If a kitten encounters a virus or bacteria during this window, before vaccination can take over, it has very little defense of its own. That’s why eye infections and upper respiratory illness hit hardest in young kittens: they’re caught in a gap between their mother’s immunity and their own.

The outcome depends heavily on how many maternal antibodies a kitten received. Kittens born to well-vaccinated mothers with strong antibody levels may encounter feline herpesvirus and fight it off without ever showing symptoms. Kittens with low or absent maternal antibodies are the ones who develop full-blown infections.

Feline Herpesvirus Is the Leading Cause

Feline herpesvirus-1 (also called feline rhinotracheitis virus) is responsible for a large share of eye infections in kittens. It causes acute upper respiratory and ocular disease that is particularly severe in young cats. The virus spreads through direct contact, sneezing, and shared surfaces, and a mother cat can transmit it to her kittens at birth, sometimes through a genital infection.

What makes herpesvirus especially problematic is that it never truly leaves. After the initial infection clears, the virus goes dormant in nerve tissue and can reactivate later during periods of stress or illness. According to Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, recurrent herpesvirus infection is the most frequent cause of corneal ulcers in cats. So a kitten infected at two weeks old may deal with flare-ups for years.

Bacteria That Target Kitten Eyes

Several bacterial species cause or worsen eye infections in kittens. Chlamydia felis is one of the most common. It primarily causes conjunctivitis, the pink, swollen, weepy eye condition that often starts in one eye and then spreads to both. The discharge typically begins clear and watery, then thickens into a yellow or greenish mucus as the infection progresses.

Mycoplasma species are also frequently involved. Mycoplasma felis and Mycoplasma gatae can cause tearing, swelling of the tissue lining the eye, and the formation of a thin membrane over the eye surface. Interestingly, Mycoplasma organisms are sometimes found in perfectly healthy cats too, which means they may act more as opportunists, taking advantage when a virus has already weakened the kitten’s defenses. Staphylococcus and other common bacteria round out the list, particularly in kittens living in less-than-clean conditions.

Infections Before the Eyes Even Open

Kittens are born with their eyelids sealed shut. The lids normally open between 10 and 14 days of age. In some cases, infectious agents get behind those closed eyelids and multiply in the warm, enclosed space. Pus builds up, the lids swell, and the pressure can damage the cornea before anyone realizes there’s a problem. This condition, called neonatal ophthalmia, is one of the most serious forms of kitten eye infection.

The queen typically transmits the infection at birth or shortly after. How exactly the pathogens get behind sealed eyelids isn’t fully understood, but delayed eyelid opening seems to make it worse by allowing secretions to accumulate longer. If the infection isn’t caught, corneal ulceration and even perforation of the eye can follow. A collapsed or deflated-looking eye is the most alarming sign and indicates the globe itself may be compromised.

Crowding and Stress Make It Worse

Environment plays a major role. The prevalence of eye-infecting pathogens is directly correlated with how many cats are packed into a space. Shelters, catteries, and multi-cat foster homes see far higher rates of infection than single-cat households. Crowding increases exposure to viruses, and it also creates stress, which suppresses immune function in kittens that already have fragile defenses.

Poor ventilation, inadequate hygiene, temperature extremes, and noise all compound the risk. Guidelines for shelter environments recommend 10 to 12 air exchanges per hour and temperatures between 59 and 70°F to reduce disease transmission. For kittens in home settings, keeping the nesting area clean and warm, and limiting exposure to unfamiliar cats, significantly lowers the chances of infection.

Signs to Watch For

In kittens younger than two weeks whose eyes are still closed, the warning signs include a visibly swollen eyelid, discharge seeping from beneath the lid, crusting around the eye, and sores on the eyelid surface. Sneezing or nasal discharge often accompanies the eye symptoms because the same viruses attack both areas.

In older kittens whose eyes have opened, look for:

  • Redness and swelling in and around the eyes
  • Discharge ranging from clear and watery to thick pus
  • Crusting that glues the eyelids shut, especially after sleep
  • Squinting or light sensitivity, where the kitten avoids bright areas or keeps one eye closed
  • An eyelid stuck to the eye surface, which can indicate adhesions forming between inflamed tissues
  • Eyelids that haven’t opened by 14 days, which suggests trapped infection

What Happens Without Treatment

Untreated eye infections in kittens can cause permanent damage surprisingly quickly. Corneal ulcers are one of the most common complications. The signs include a cloudy spot on the eye’s surface, discharge, squinting, and the kitten rubbing at its face. If an ulcer deepens, it can perforate the cornea entirely.

Chronic or severe herpesvirus infections can also cause symblepharon, a condition where inflamed tissue on the inner eyelid fuses to the surface of the eye itself. This creates permanent adhesions that restrict eye movement and can obstruct vision. Dry eye, corneal scarring, blindness, and in the worst cases, rupture of the eye are all possible outcomes when infections go unaddressed. The earlier treatment starts, the better the chances of preserving normal vision.

How Kitten Eye Infections Are Treated

Treatment depends on whether the infection is viral, bacterial, or both. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments applied directly to the eye. For infections caused by Chlamydia or Mycoplasma, broader-spectrum antibiotics are typically chosen because these organisms don’t respond to the same drugs that work on common bacteria.

Viral infections, particularly herpesvirus, are treated with antiviral eye drops. Some antiviral formulations only need to be applied twice a day rather than the more frequent dosing other options require, which makes a real difference when you’re medicating a squirming kitten multiple times daily. For neonatal kittens with sealed, swollen eyelids, a veterinarian will gently open the lids to drain trapped pus before starting medication.

Recovery time varies. Mild bacterial conjunctivitis may clear in a week or two with consistent treatment. Herpesvirus-related infections can take longer and may recur. Kittens with corneal ulcers need close monitoring, sometimes with follow-up staining tests to confirm the ulcer is healing rather than deepening.
