Your lips lose moisture faster than any other part of your face, and they lack the built-in defenses that protect the rest of your skin. That combination is the core reason lips chap so easily. Understanding the specific vulnerabilities of lip tissue helps explain why certain weather, habits, and health conditions make the problem worse.
Lip Skin Is Fundamentally Different
The skin on your lips is structurally unlike the skin on your cheeks, forehead, or anywhere else on your body. It has a much thinner outer protective layer (called the stratum corneum), contains almost no melanin for UV protection, and, critically, has no sebaceous glands. Those glands are what produce the natural oils that keep the rest of your skin moisturized and flexible. Without them, your lips have no built-in system for sealing in moisture.
This means your lips depend almost entirely on external sources of hydration: saliva, the water content of the tissue underneath, and whatever you apply to them. When conditions shift even slightly, whether from a drop in humidity, a gust of wind, or a long stretch without drinking water, lips are the first place to show it.

The rate at which water evaporates through lip skin averages about 67 grams per square meter per hour. Compare that to the cheeks at roughly 20 g/m²h, or the neck at about 16 g/m²h. That means lips lose moisture more than three times faster than the cheeks and over four times faster than the neck.
This measurement, called transepidermal water loss, reflects how quickly water passes through the skin and escapes into the air. A thin protective barrier plus no oil production equals a surface that is constantly drying out. In cold or dry air, the rate climbs even higher because low-humidity environments pull moisture away from the skin more aggressively.
Common Triggers That Make It Worse
Knowing why lips are vulnerable explains the baseline. But several everyday factors actively accelerate chapping:
- Cold or dry weather: Low humidity and cold winds strip moisture from lips faster than the tissue can replace it. Indoor heating during winter drops humidity further, so you’re getting hit from both sides.
- Licking your lips: Saliva feels soothing for a moment, but it evaporates quickly and takes the lips’ existing moisture with it. Saliva also contains digestive enzymes that break down the already thin protective layer, leaving lips more exposed than before.

Nutritional Deficiencies and Chronic Chapping
If your lips stay cracked despite consistent moisturizing and adequate hydration, a vitamin or mineral deficiency may be involved. Vitamin B12 deficiency is a well-documented cause of cheilitis, the clinical term for inflamed, cracked lips. It can also cause soreness at the corners of the mouth (angular cheilitis), along with a burning sensation and changes in taste. Iron deficiency produces similar symptoms.
B-complex vitamins in general play a role in maintaining skin integrity. People who follow restrictive diets, have absorption issues, or take certain medications that interfere with nutrient uptake are more likely to experience this type of chronic lip dryness. If chapping persists for weeks despite good lip care habits, it’s worth looking at nutritional factors rather than assuming it’s purely environmental.
Why Some Lip Balms Don’t Actually Help
Not all lip products work the same way, and some can actually make the cycle worse. A good lip treatment needs to do two things: pull moisture into the tissue and then lock it there. These are separate jobs handled by different types of ingredients.
Humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin draw water from deeper skin layers and the surrounding environment into the lip surface. They’re what gives lips that immediate plump, hydrated feeling. But humectants used alone can backfire in dry environments. If there’s no moisture in the air to pull in, they start pulling water from deeper in your own tissue, potentially making dryness worse.
Occlusives like petrolatum (petroleum jelly), beeswax, and shea butter form a physical seal over the lip surface that prevents water from evaporating. These are the ingredients that actually stop the high rate of transepidermal water loss that makes lips so vulnerable in the first place. Petrolatum is one of the most effective: it blocks up to 98 percent of water loss from the skin surface.
Barrier-repair ingredients like ceramides go a step further by helping rebuild the lip’s damaged protective layer over time, addressing the root problem rather than just covering it up. The most effective lip balms combine all three types: a humectant to hydrate, an occlusive to seal, and a barrier-repair ingredient to strengthen the skin.
Products that contain fragrances, menthol, camphor, or salicylic acid can irritate already compromised lip skin. That tingling sensation some medicated balms produce is mild irritation, not healing. It can trigger a cycle where you reapply constantly because the product itself is contributing to dryness.
Sun Protection for Lips
Because lips have almost no melanin, they’re essentially unprotected against UV damage every time you step outside. Dermatologists recommend using a lip balm with at least SPF 30, which blocks about 97 percent of UV rays. The lower lip is especially vulnerable since it faces upward and catches more direct sunlight throughout the day.
Early signs of chronic sun damage on the lips include persistent dryness that doesn’t respond to balm, blurring of the sharp border between lip and surrounding skin, and pale or mottled patches. These changes develop gradually over years of cumulative exposure. Reapplying SPF lip balm every two hours during sun exposure, just as you would sunscreen on the rest of your face, is the most practical way to prevent long-term damage.
Practical Steps That Actually Work
The most effective approach to preventing chapped lips targets multiple causes at once. Apply a balm containing both a humectant and an occlusive before going outside in cold or dry weather, and reapply after eating or drinking. At night, a thicker layer of an occlusive product like petroleum jelly can take advantage of the hours when you’re not wiping it off to let the lip barrier recover.
Staying hydrated matters, but it’s not a cure-all. Drinking water addresses one source of lip moisture, but it can’t compensate for the structural reality that lips lose water through their surface far faster than other skin. External protection is always part of the equation. If you tend to breathe through your mouth at night, running a humidifier in the bedroom adds moisture to the air and reduces the drying effect on both lips and nasal passages.
Breaking the licking habit is one of the highest-impact changes you can make. Keeping a balm within easy reach, in a pocket or on your desk, gives you something to do instead of licking when your lips feel dry. Over a few days without the saliva cycle, most people notice a significant improvement.
