Mosquitoes don’t bite everyone equally, and the reasons are more biological than personal. Your body chemistry, the bacteria living on your skin, your genetics, and even what you’re wearing all influence how attractive you are to mosquitoes. Some of these factors you can change, and some you’re stuck with.
Your Breath Is the First Signal
Mosquitoes begin tracking you from a distance by following the trail of carbon dioxide you exhale. Specialized receptors on their mouthparts detect CO2 and use it to navigate toward a potential host. Everyone exhales CO2, but the amount varies. Larger people produce more of it. Pregnant women exhale about 21% more CO2 than non-pregnant women, which is one reason they tend to get bitten more often. Exercise also temporarily increases your CO2 output, making you a bigger target during and right after a workout.
What Your Skin Smells Like Matters Most
Once a mosquito gets closer, it switches from tracking CO2 to honing in on the chemical cocktail rising off your skin. Lactic acid, ammonia, and other compounds in your sweat are powerful attractants, and the mix of these chemicals is different for everyone.
A big part of what creates your unique scent profile is the community of bacteria living on your skin. A study published in PLOS ONE found that people who were highly attractive to mosquitoes had a higher abundance but lower diversity of skin bacteria compared to people mosquitoes avoided. In other words, having a lot of just a few types of bacteria made people more appealing, while having a wider variety of bacterial species seemed protective. Certain bacterial genera, including Pseudomonas and Variovorax, were associated with being less attractive to mosquitoes.
This helps explain why mosquitoes tend to favor ankles and feet, where bacterial colonies are especially dense.
Genetics Play a Large Role
If you’ve always felt like a mosquito magnet compared to the people around you, your genes are a likely explanation. A twin study found that the heritability of mosquito attractiveness is around 62%, and when identical twins were tested together, that estimate rose to 83%. That’s comparable to the heritability of height or IQ. Your genes influence your skin bacteria, your body odor profile, and potentially what chemical signals you emit, all of which feed into how mosquitoes perceive you.
Blood Type Has a Smaller Effect
You may have heard that mosquitoes prefer certain blood types, and there is some evidence for this, though it’s more modest than social media suggests. In a study of 64 volunteers, mosquitoes landed on people with Type O blood about 78.5% of the time (relative to controls), compared to 45.3% for Type A. The difference between O and A was statistically significant, but the differences between O and other blood types were not. There’s also a wrinkle: the effect was stronger in “secretors,” people whose blood-type antigens show up in their skin and saliva, which about 80% of people are. So blood type plays a role, but it’s one factor among many.
Beer Makes You More Attractive to Mosquitoes
Drinking alcohol genuinely increases mosquito interest. In a controlled study, volunteers who drank beer saw a significant jump in mosquito activity directed toward them. About 47% of mosquitoes became activated after beer consumption compared to 35% before drinking. When researchers measured directional flight, 65% of mosquitoes flew toward the beer drinkers’ odor, a significant increase. The mechanism isn’t fully understood, since ethanol itself doesn’t seem to be the attractant. Changes in skin temperature and volatile compounds after drinking likely play a role.
Body Heat and Pregnancy
Mosquitoes use thermal sensing to find exposed skin once they’re within close range. Higher body temperatures make you easier to detect. This is another reason pregnant women are disproportionately targeted: in addition to exhaling more CO2, their core and skin temperatures run higher. Similarly, after exercise, your elevated body heat combines with increased CO2 and sweat to create a perfect storm of mosquito attractants.
What You Wear Counts
Color choice affects how visible you are to mosquitoes. Research from UC Irvine found that day-biting mosquitoes are attracted to a wide range of light wavelengths during daytime, meaning dark colors like black, red, and navy make you easier to spot. Night-biting species behave differently: they actively avoid ultraviolet and blue light during the day. The practical takeaway is that lighter-colored clothing gives you a slight edge, at least during daylight hours.
What Doesn’t Work
Eating garlic and taking vitamin B supplements are two of the most popular folk remedies for repelling mosquitoes. Neither works. Controlled lab trials at the University of Wisconsin had volunteers take either garlic, vitamin B, or a placebo, then measured their attractiveness to mosquitoes. There was no difference between the groups. Bananas, another frequent claim, also lack supporting evidence. The chemistry that makes you attractive to mosquitoes is largely driven by your metabolism, genetics, and skin microbiome, not by individual foods passing through your digestive system.
What You Can Actually Control
You can’t change your genes, blood type, or skin microbiome overnight, but several practical factors are within your control. Showering after exercise reduces the lactic acid and ammonia on your skin. Wearing lighter-colored, loose-fitting clothing makes you less visible and harder to bite through. Avoiding alcohol outdoors during peak mosquito hours removes a proven attractant. And timing matters: most mosquito species are most active at dawn and dusk, so limiting exposed skin during those windows makes a real difference.
Proven topical repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus work by masking or overriding the chemical signals mosquitoes use to find you. They don’t make you invisible, but they disrupt the sensory chain that starts with CO2 and ends with a bite.
