Why Do My Bruises Last So Long and When to Worry

Most bruises heal completely within about two weeks, cycling through a predictable color progression from reddish-pink to deep purple, then fading through green and yellow before disappearing. If yours routinely outlast that two-week window, several factors could be slowing the process, from where the bruise is on your body to medications you take, your age, or nutritional gaps.

How a Normal Bruise Heals

A bruise forms when small blood vessels beneath the skin break open and leak blood into the surrounding tissue. Your body immediately begins cleaning up that leaked blood, breaking it down through a series of chemical reactions that produce the familiar color changes: pinkish-red at first, shifting to dark blue or purple within hours, then gradually fading through violet, green, dark yellow, and finally pale yellow before vanishing entirely.

Each color represents a different stage of your body processing the hemoglobin from trapped red blood cells. The whole cycle typically wraps up in about 14 days for a moderate bruise on a healthy adult. Anything significantly beyond that timeline is worth paying attention to.

Location Matters More Than You’d Think

Bruises on your legs and lower body almost always heal more slowly than those on your arms, chest, or face. Gravity works against you here. Blood pools more easily in your lower extremities, and the increased pressure in those blood vessels means more blood leaks out initially and takes longer to reabsorb. A bruise on your shin might hang around for three or four weeks, while the same injury on your forearm could clear in ten days. If your slow-healing bruises are mostly on your legs, location alone may explain what you’re seeing.

Medications That Slow Healing

Several common drug classes interfere with your body’s ability to stop bleeding quickly, which means more blood escapes into the tissue and the resulting bruise is both larger and longer-lasting.

  • Blood thinners (anticoagulants): These reduce your blood’s ability to form clots. When a small vessel breaks, bleeding continues longer than it normally would, producing a bigger bruise that takes more time to clear.
  • Pain relievers like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen: These over-the-counter NSAIDs also reduce clotting ability. Even occasional use can make bruises larger and slower to fade.
  • Anti-platelet medications: Prescribed to prevent heart attacks and strokes, these work by keeping blood cells called platelets from sticking together, which has the same bruise-prolonging effect.
  • Corticosteroids: Whether taken as pills or applied as creams over long periods, these thin the skin itself, making blood vessels more vulnerable and bruises more frequent.

If you started a new medication and noticed your bruises suddenly lasting weeks instead of days, the connection is likely real. Don’t stop taking a prescribed medication on your own, but it’s a conversation worth having at your next appointment.

How Aging Changes Your Skin

As you get older, the connective tissue that cushions and protects the small blood vessels beneath your skin gradually breaks down. Years of sun exposure accelerate this process. The result is thinner, less resilient skin and more fragile blood vessels that rupture more easily, sometimes without any obvious trauma at all.

This condition, sometimes called senile purpura, is extremely common in older adults. Bruises appear on the forearms and hands without a clear cause, and after they fade they can leave behind a brownish discoloration from iron deposits in the skin. That residual staining may take weeks or months to clear, and in some cases it becomes permanent. The bruises themselves aren’t dangerous, but they can make it look like healing is taking much longer than it actually is because of the lingering pigment.

Nutritional Gaps That Affect Bruising

Two vitamins play direct roles in how your body handles bruises. Vitamin C is essential for building collagen, the structural protein that keeps blood vessel walls strong. When vitamin C levels drop too low, vessel walls weaken and break more easily, and the tissue repair that clears a bruise slows down. You don’t need to have full-blown scurvy for this to matter. Even a mild deficiency can contribute to easier, longer-lasting bruises.

Vitamin K is the nutrient your body needs to form blood clots. Without enough of it, bleeding from damaged vessels continues longer than it should, producing larger bruises. Vitamin K deficiency is rare in adults who eat a varied diet (leafy greens are a rich source), but it can develop with certain digestive conditions that impair nutrient absorption, or with prolonged antibiotic use that disrupts gut bacteria involved in vitamin K production.

What You Can Do Right After an Injury

The first several hours after a bruise forms are your best window to limit its size and speed up healing. Applying ice or a cold pack causes blood vessels to constrict, reducing the amount of blood that leaks into the tissue. The Cleveland Clinic recommends cold therapy in 10-minute intervals during the first eight hours after injury. Wrapping ice in a cloth protects your skin while still delivering the benefit.

Elevating the bruised area above heart level also helps by reducing blood flow to the region. Compression with a snug bandage can limit swelling. After the first day or two, switching to gentle warmth encourages blood flow that helps your body clear the trapped blood more quickly.

Signs a Bruise Needs Medical Attention

Slow-healing bruises are usually harmless, but certain patterns can signal something more serious. Bruising that’s worth investigating tends to look different from ordinary bumps and knocks in specific ways: appearing spontaneously without any injury you can recall, showing up in unusual locations like the trunk, back, buttocks, ears, or neck, or occurring frequently (more than five bruises at a time) with individual bruises larger than a centimeter.

An underlying bleeding disorder is more likely when bruising is persistent, appears in those unusual locations, and is accompanied by other signs of abnormal bleeding like frequent nosebleeds, heavy menstrual periods, or prolonged bleeding from minor cuts. Swollen lymph nodes, unexplained weight loss, or persistent fatigue alongside unusual bruising patterns can point to conditions affecting the blood or bone marrow that need prompt evaluation. Nutritional status, alcohol use, and liver or kidney function all provide diagnostic clues, so your doctor will likely ask about these if you bring up a bruising concern.

For most people, though, slow-healing bruises come down to one or two straightforward explanations: the bruise is on a lower extremity, a daily medication is interfering with clotting, or age-related skin changes have made blood vessels more fragile. Identifying which factor applies to you is the first step toward knowing whether your bruises are simply slow or genuinely abnormal.
