Foul-smelling gas comes down to one thing: sulfur. Bacteria in your colon break down food and produce hydrogen sulfide as a byproduct, and that’s the compound responsible for the rotten-egg smell. Everyone produces some hydrogen sulfide, but certain diets, digestive patterns, and underlying conditions can tip the balance toward consistently terrible-smelling gas.
What Makes Gas Smell Bad
Most of the gas your body produces is actually odorless. The bulk of a fart is nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and sometimes methane. None of those have a noticeable smell. The stench comes from trace sulfur compounds, primarily hydrogen sulfide, produced by a specific group of gut bacteria called sulfate-reducing bacteria. These microbes thrive on sulfur-containing compounds in your food, and hydrogen sulfide is the end product of their metabolism. Even tiny amounts of it create a powerful odor.
The composition of your gut bacteria determines how much hydrogen sulfide you produce. People with a larger population of sulfate-reducing bacteria will naturally produce smellier gas, even eating the same foods as someone else. Your unique bacterial mix is shaped by your long-term diet, antibiotic history, and overall gut health.
Foods That Make It Worse
Diet is the single biggest factor you can control. Foods high in sulfur give those bacteria more raw material to work with, which means more hydrogen sulfide in your gas. The main offenders include:
- Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, onions
- Legumes: beans and lentils
- High-protein diets: meat, eggs, and dairy are rich in sulfur-containing amino acids
- Greasy and fatty foods: these slow digestion, giving bacteria more time to ferment
High-fiber foods can also increase gas volume overall. Fiber is healthy, but if you’ve recently increased your fiber intake, your gut bacteria need time to adjust. The smell often improves after a few weeks as your microbiome adapts.
Constipation plays a surprisingly large role too. The longer stool sits in your colon, the more time bacteria have to ferment it. That extended fermentation produces more sulfur gas, which is why people who are backed up often notice their gas smells significantly worse than usual.
Food Intolerances and Malabsorption
If your gas is consistently foul regardless of what you eat, a food intolerance could be the issue. Lactose intolerance is one of the most common culprits. When your body doesn’t produce enough of the enzyme that breaks down lactose (the sugar in dairy), that undigested lactose passes into your colon intact. Bacteria there feast on it, producing excess gas and often a particularly unpleasant smell. Many people develop some degree of lactose intolerance as adults without realizing it, because the symptoms build gradually.
Gluten sensitivity and fructose malabsorption work through a similar mechanism. Any carbohydrate your small intestine fails to absorb becomes fuel for colonic bacteria. The result is more gas, more fermentation byproducts, and worse odor. If you notice a pattern where dairy, wheat, or certain fruits consistently make things worse, that’s a clue worth paying attention to.
Gut Conditions That Increase Odor
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, commonly called SIBO, is a condition where bacteria that normally live in the colon migrate upward into the small intestine. Because the small intestine is where most nutrient absorption happens, these misplaced bacteria get first access to carbohydrates and start fermenting them before your body can absorb them. More bacteria digesting food in the wrong place means more gas and more foul-smelling byproducts. SIBO can also cause fat malabsorption, leading to oily, smelly stools alongside the gas. It’s diagnosed with a simple breath test that measures hydrogen and methane levels.
A less well-known condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) can also be behind persistently terrible gas. The pancreas normally releases enzymes that help digest fat. When it doesn’t produce enough of these enzymes, fat passes through undigested, feeding bacteria and producing extremely foul-smelling gas. A hallmark sign of EPI is stool that’s pale, greasy, frothy, and hard to flush because of the undigested fat content. If your gas is bad and your stools look like that, it’s worth bringing up with a doctor.
Antibiotics and Medications
Antibiotics are well known for disrupting gut bacteria, and that disruption can shift the balance toward more gas-producing or sulfur-producing species. If your gas became noticeably worse during or after a course of antibiotics, the medication likely altered your microbiome. For most people this resolves within a few weeks as bacterial populations rebalance, but some people find the change persists longer.
Other medications that affect digestion, particularly those that slow gut motility or alter stomach acid levels, can indirectly worsen gas odor by changing how food is broken down and how long it sits in the colon.
How Much Gas Is Normal
For years, medical textbooks cited an average of about 14 gas events per day as normal. A recent study that used wearable sensors in participants’ underwear to track real-world data found the actual average is closer to 32 times per day, with a huge range from 4 to 59 times. The takeaway: passing gas frequently is completely normal, and you’re probably not farting more than average. The smell, not the frequency, is usually what signals something worth investigating.
Practical Ways to Reduce the Smell
Start with diet. Try cutting back on the high-sulfur foods listed above for two to three weeks and see if things improve. If you eat a lot of protein (especially from eggs, red meat, or whey supplements), that’s one of the most common drivers of sulfur-heavy gas. Reducing portion sizes of protein at individual meals can make a noticeable difference even if your total daily intake stays the same, because smaller amounts are easier for your small intestine to absorb before reaching the colon.
Staying hydrated and physically active both help keep things moving through your digestive tract, reducing the fermentation time that makes gas smell worse. If constipation is part of the picture, addressing that alone can dramatically improve odor.
For food intolerances, an elimination diet is the most straightforward approach. Remove suspected triggers (dairy is usually the best place to start) for two to three weeks, then reintroduce them and note whether the smell returns. This is more reliable than most over-the-counter intolerance tests.
If you’ve adjusted your diet and the smell hasn’t improved, or if your gas comes with other symptoms like unintentional weight loss, blood in your stool, persistent diarrhea, or significant abdominal pain, those are signs that something beyond diet is going on and worth getting evaluated.
