Farts smell rotten primarily because of hydrogen sulfide, a gas your gut bacteria produce when they break down sulfur-containing foods. It’s the same compound responsible for the smell of rotten eggs, and even tiny amounts are enough to make a room unpleasant. Most of the gas you pass (up to 25 times a day, which is normal) is actually odorless. The stench comes from that small sulfur fraction, and how bad it gets depends on what you eat, which bacteria are thriving in your colon, and whether an underlying digestive issue is amplifying the process.

What Creates the Rotten Egg Smell

Your large intestine hosts a group of microbes called sulfate-reducing bacteria. Their entire metabolism revolves around converting sulfur compounds into hydrogen sulfide as a waste product. When you eat foods rich in sulfur, these bacteria get more fuel, and they produce more of this pungent gas. The lining of your colon is directly exposed to it, which is why the smell can be so potent by the time it exits.

Hydrogen sulfide isn’t the only smelly compound in the mix. Gut bacteria also produce smaller amounts of other sulfur gases and compounds like indole and skatole from protein digestion. But hydrogen sulfide is the dominant offender, and it’s detectable by the human nose at remarkably low concentrations.

Foods That Make It Worse

The biggest dietary driver of rotten-smelling gas is sulfur intake. Some foods are packed with sulfur compounds, and eating a lot of them in a short period will predictably increase the stench. The main categories include:

  • Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, bok choy, and turnips
  • High-protein foods: red meat (the highest sulfur content), eggs, fish, pork, poultry, dairy, soy, and whey protein powder
  • Bone broth

Red meat and eggs are particularly notable. The sulfur-containing amino acids in animal protein are prime fuel for those sulfate-reducing bacteria. If you’ve recently increased your protein intake, started a new protein powder, or had a steak-heavy weekend, that’s a likely explanation.

Supplements and food additives can also contribute in ways people don’t expect. Glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, and MSM (a joint supplement) all contain sulfur. Carrageenan, a thickener added to many dairy products, is another hidden source. If you’ve recently started a new supplement and noticed a change, check the ingredient list for anything with “sulfur,” “sulfite,” or “sulfate” in the name.

Why Protein-Heavy Diets Are a Common Culprit

When you eat more protein than your small intestine can fully absorb, the excess reaches your colon. There, bacteria ferment it, producing hydrogen sulfide and other foul-smelling byproducts. This is different from the fermentation of carbohydrates like fiber and starches, which tends to produce more volume of gas but less odor.

This is why high-protein, low-fiber diets often lead to gas that smells worse even if you’re passing it less frequently. The ratio matters. Fiber feeds bacteria that produce relatively odorless gases like hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Protein feeds the ones that produce sulfur compounds. A diet tilted heavily toward protein without much fiber shifts the balance toward smellier output.

Medications That Change Gas Odor

Several common medications can alter the smell of your gas by disrupting the bacterial balance in your gut. Antibiotics are the most obvious, since they kill off certain bacterial populations and allow others, potentially including more sulfate-reducing species, to flourish. This imbalance can persist for weeks after you finish a course.

Other medications linked to foul-smelling gas include NSAIDs like ibuprofen, laxatives, antifungal medications, and statins. If your gas changed noticeably after starting a new medication, that connection is worth noting.

When a Digestive Condition Is the Cause

Persistently rotten-smelling gas, especially when paired with other symptoms, can signal a digestive condition that’s worth investigating. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is one of the more common ones. In SIBO, bacteria that normally live in the large intestine colonize the small intestine, where they ferment food too early in the digestive process. This causes bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea or constipation, and notably smelly gas. SIBO can also cause fat malabsorption, which makes stool oily, floating, or particularly foul.

SIBO doesn’t usually develop on its own. It’s often connected to conditions that slow intestinal motility or change the structure of the gut, including diabetes, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic pancreatitis. Celiac disease and other malabsorption conditions deserve particular attention because undigested food reaching the colon gives bacteria far more material to ferment, producing excess gas with a stronger smell.

Lactose intolerance and fructose malabsorption work similarly. If your body can’t break down a specific sugar in the small intestine, it arrives intact in the colon, where bacteria feast on it and produce gas. The odor profile depends on which bacteria are doing the work.

Simple Ways to Reduce the Smell

The most effective approach is adjusting what you eat. You don’t need to eliminate sulfur-rich foods entirely, but cutting back on the biggest sources for a week or two can confirm whether diet is the issue. Try reducing red meat, eggs, and cruciferous vegetables simultaneously, then reintroduce them one at a time to identify your personal triggers.

Adding more fiber from non-cruciferous sources (oats, psyllium, sweet potatoes, most fruits) can shift fermentation patterns toward less odorous gas. Eating smaller, more frequent meals also helps by giving your small intestine a better chance to absorb nutrients before they reach the colon.

Bismuth-based products, like the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol, have a direct effect on hydrogen sulfide. Bismuth binds to sulfide in the gut and inhibits the growth of sulfate-reducing bacteria, reducing both the production and the smell. Research in animal models has shown that bismuth can significantly reduce sulfide output, even when antibiotics alone couldn’t. This makes it a reasonable short-term option for particularly bad stretches, though it’s not meant for daily long-term use.

Probiotics may help by shifting the bacterial population in your colon, though results vary widely between individuals and strains. Activated charcoal supplements and charcoal-lined undergarments have some anecdotal support for absorbing sulfur gases, but the evidence is limited.

Signs That Something More Serious Is Going On

Smelly gas by itself is almost always a dietary issue and not a sign of disease. But when it comes with other persistent symptoms, it’s worth getting checked out. Pay attention if you’re also experiencing stomach pain or bloating that doesn’t resolve, ongoing changes in bowel habits like chronic diarrhea or constipation, unintentional weight loss, fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest, or blood in your stool. These combinations can point to malabsorption syndromes, SIBO, inflammatory bowel disease, or other conditions that benefit from early diagnosis and treatment.
