Why Do My Farts Smell So Bad? Causes and Fixes

Foul-smelling gas comes down to sulfur. When bacteria in your large intestine break down certain foods, they produce sulfur-containing gases, primarily hydrogen sulfide (the classic rotten-egg smell) and methyl mercaptan (closer to rotten cabbage). These compounds are detectable at incredibly low concentrations. Methyl mercaptan, for example, has an odor threshold of just 0.002 parts per million, which means even a tiny amount makes a big impression.

Everyone passes gas, up to 25 times a day by most estimates. The volume and frequency are normal. What changes the smell is the composition of that gas, and that depends on what you’re eating, what’s living in your gut, and how efficiently your digestive system is working.

Sulfur-Rich Foods Are the Most Common Cause

The foods most likely to make your gas smell worse are the ones highest in sulfur-containing compounds. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage are classic offenders. Onions, garlic, and mushrooms also contribute. Beans and lentils produce a lot of gas on their own, and when combined with sulfur-rich ingredients, the result is both more frequent and more pungent.

High-protein diets can shift things too. When you eat more meat, eggs, or dairy than your body can fully absorb in the small intestine, the excess protein reaches the colon, where bacteria break it down through a process called putrefaction. This produces hydrogen sulfide along with other foul-smelling byproducts. If you’ve recently increased your protein intake or started a new supplement, that alone could explain the change.

Greasy and fatty foods slow digestion overall, giving gut bacteria more time to ferment what’s sitting in your colon. Fiber-heavy foods do the same in a different way: they’re meant to be fermented by colonic bacteria, which is healthy, but the trade-off is more gas production. If you’ve recently added more fiber to your diet, expect a transition period of a few weeks before your gut adjusts.

Constipation Makes Everything Worse

When stool sits in your colon longer than usual, bacteria have more time to ferment it. The longer the transit time, the more sulfur gas builds up. This is one of the most overlooked reasons for a sudden change in gas odor. You don’t have to be severely backed up for this to matter. Even going from one bowel movement a day to one every other day can shift the smell noticeably. Staying hydrated, moving your body, and eating enough fiber (gradually, not all at once) all help keep things moving.

Your Gut Bacteria Determine the Smell

Your colon hosts trillions of bacteria, and the specific mix matters. Certain species, called sulfate-reducing bacteria, specialize in producing hydrogen sulfide as a metabolic byproduct. Everyone has some of these bacteria, but their numbers fluctuate based on diet, antibiotic use, illness, and other factors. When sulfate-reducing bacteria dominate, even a modest amount of sulfur in your diet can produce disproportionately smelly gas.

Hydrogen sulfide follows what researchers describe as a “bell-shaped response” in the body. In small quantities, your cells can use and detoxify it without issue. But when production outpaces your body’s ability to clear it, the excess escapes as gas, and you (and everyone nearby) notice. A diet consistently high in sulfur-containing foods feeds these bacteria and encourages their growth, creating a cycle that can be hard to break without deliberate dietary changes.

Medical Conditions That Change Gas Odor

Sometimes persistently foul gas points to a digestive issue worth investigating. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is one of the more common culprits. Normally, the small intestine has relatively few bacteria compared to the colon. In SIBO, bacterial populations in the small intestine grow abnormally, and those bacteria start digesting carbohydrates before your body can absorb them. The result is excess gas, bloating, and sometimes fat malabsorption that makes both your gas and stool smell notably worse.

Lactose intolerance works through a similar mechanism. If you lack enough of the enzyme that breaks down lactose (the sugar in dairy), undigested lactose reaches the colon and becomes fuel for gas-producing bacteria. The same applies to fructose malabsorption and other carbohydrate intolerances. Celiac disease, an autoimmune reaction to gluten, damages the lining of the small intestine and impairs nutrient absorption broadly, which can also increase the amount of undigested material reaching the colon.

If your smelly gas is accompanied by persistent bloating, diarrhea, oily or unusually foul-smelling stools, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal pain, those patterns suggest something beyond diet alone.

Medications and Supplements

Several common medications increase gas production or change its character. Iron supplements are a frequent offender, both increasing constipation (which worsens odor as described above) and directly altering the gut environment. Multivitamins containing iron have the same effect. Fiber supplements like psyllium can increase gas temporarily as your gut microbiome adjusts to the added fermentable material. Opioid pain medications slow gut motility significantly, leading to the same fermentation buildup you’d see with constipation. Even antacids can contribute by changing the pH of your stomach, which affects how food is broken down before it reaches the colon.

What Actually Reduces the Smell

The most effective first step is identifying and reducing sulfur-heavy foods for a week or two to see if things improve. You don’t need to eliminate them permanently. Just scaling back on cruciferous vegetables, onions, garlic, and high-protein meals for a short period can tell you a lot about what’s driving the problem.

For people with IBS or suspected food intolerances, a low-FODMAP elimination diet is a more structured approach. The elimination phase typically lasts two to six weeks, followed by about eight weeks of gradually reintroducing food groups to identify specific triggers. This approach works for roughly 75% of people with IBS, though the remaining 25% may not see improvement.

For short-term odor control, bismuth subsalicylate (the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol) is surprisingly effective. At standard doses, it binds more than 95% of sulfide gases in the gut. It’s not safe for daily long-term use due to salicylate accumulation, but using it strategically before a social event or a meal you know will cause trouble is both safe and practical.

Oral activated charcoal, despite its popularity, has not held up well in clinical trials. Early studies looked promising, but more rigorous research has failed to show consistent benefit for reducing gas odor when taken by mouth. However, external charcoal products work quite well. Activated charcoal underwear liners absorb 55 to 77% of sulfur gases, and charcoal-lined briefs absorb close to 100%. Charcoal seat cushions are less effective, capturing only about 20% of sulfur gases.

Temporary vs. Persistent Changes

A few days of unusually smelly gas after a heavy meal, a course of antibiotics, or a dietary change is completely normal and will resolve on its own. Your gut microbiome is constantly adjusting, and short-term shifts in gas composition are part of that process.

What’s worth paying closer attention to is a sustained change lasting several weeks, especially if it comes with other symptoms like chronic bloating, changes in stool consistency, abdominal cramping, or unintended weight loss. These patterns can point to conditions like SIBO, celiac disease, or other malabsorption issues that benefit from proper diagnosis and treatment rather than just dietary tinkering.
