Why Do My Farts Smell Sour? Causes and Fixes

Sour-smelling gas usually comes from undigested carbohydrates fermenting in your large intestine. When sugars and starches aren’t fully broken down before reaching your colon, bacteria there feed on them and produce a mix of gases and short-chain fatty acids that carry that distinctive acidic, vinegar-like odor. This is different from the sulfur or “rotten egg” smell that comes from protein digestion, and the distinction matters because the causes and fixes are different too.

How Undigested Sugars Create Sour Gas

Your small intestine is supposed to absorb most sugars and starches before they reach the colon. When that process falls short, bacteria in the large intestine take over, fermenting whatever arrives. That fermentation produces hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, and short-chain fatty acids. The acids are what give the gas its sour quality. It’s essentially the same process that makes sourdough bread or sauerkraut tangy, just happening inside your gut.

Four sugars are the most common culprits: raffinose (abundant in beans, broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts), lactose (in dairy products), fructose (in onions, pears, wheat, and many soft drinks), and sorbitol (naturally in apples, peaches, and prunes, and added to sugar-free gums and candies). Nearly all starches also produce some gas during digestion. Rice is the one notable exception.

Lactose and Fructose Intolerance

If the sour smell shows up reliably after dairy or fruit, you may be dealing with a specific carbohydrate intolerance. Lactose intolerance is the most common version. Your small intestine doesn’t produce enough of the enzyme needed to break down milk sugar, so it passes intact into the colon where bacteria ferment it rapidly. The stool and gas that result are literally acidic, with a pH below 6. That acidity is what your nose picks up as sour.

Fructose intolerance works the same way but with fruit sugar. High-fructose corn syrup in soft drinks, sports drinks, and fruit juices is a frequent trigger people overlook. The undigested fructose also pulls water into the bowel, which is why bloating, cramping, and loose stools often accompany the gas. If you notice sour-smelling flatulence paired with any of those symptoms after eating specific foods, the pattern itself is a useful clue.

Bacterial Overgrowth in the Small Intestine

Sometimes the problem isn’t what you’re eating but where the fermentation is happening. In small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), bacteria that normally live in the colon colonize the small intestine instead. These bacteria start digesting carbohydrates earlier in the process, converting them into gas and short-chain fatty acids before your body gets a chance to absorb them. The result is more gas, more acid production, and often a noticeably sour or vinegary quality to it. SIBO also tends to cause persistent bloating that doesn’t resolve after passing gas, along with nausea and irregular bowel movements.

High-Fiber and High-FODMAP Diets

A sudden increase in fiber is one of the simplest explanations for sour gas. Soluble fiber found in oat bran, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, and most fruits is readily fermented by colon bacteria. Insoluble fiber in wheat bran, root vegetables, and legumes contributes too. If you’ve recently started eating more whole grains, added a fiber supplement, or shifted toward a plant-heavy diet, your gut bacteria are feasting on material they weren’t getting before, and they’re producing more acidic byproducts as a result.

FODMAPs, a group of short-chain carbohydrates that ferment easily, are a related trigger. They include the fructose, lactose, sorbitol, and other sugar alcohols already mentioned, plus compounds in garlic, onions, and wheat. People with irritable bowel syndrome are especially sensitive to these, but anyone can produce sour gas from a high-FODMAP meal.

When Sour Gas Signals Something Deeper

Passing gas up to 25 times a day falls within the normal range, and some variation in smell is expected. But sour-smelling gas that persists for weeks, especially alongside other symptoms, can point to conditions worth investigating. Celiac disease damages the lining of the small intestine and impairs carbohydrate absorption, leading to chronic fermentation. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis can do the same through inflammation. Parasitic infections like giardia disrupt digestion and commonly cause foul-smelling gas and burps, though the odor tends more toward sulfurous than sour.

Pay attention if your gas comes with unintentional weight loss, greasy or pale stools that float, persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain that doesn’t resolve, fever, or blood in your stool. These combinations suggest malabsorption or inflammation that needs evaluation beyond dietary changes.

Practical Ways to Reduce Sour-Smelling Gas

The most effective first step is an elimination approach: cut back on the most common fermentable sugars for a week or two and see if the smell changes. Start with dairy, high-fructose corn syrup, and sugar-free products containing sweeteners ending in “-ol” (sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol). If the sour smell disappears, reintroduce one category at a time to identify your specific trigger.

How you eat matters nearly as much as what you eat. Eating quickly, talking while chewing, drinking through straws, and consuming carbonated beverages all increase the amount of air you swallow, which speeds food through the digestive tract and gives your small intestine less time to absorb sugars before they hit the colon. Eating smaller, more frequent meals and sitting down to eat at a relaxed pace gives your digestive enzymes a better chance to do their job.

If you identify a specific intolerance, targeted solutions exist. Lactase enzyme supplements taken before dairy meals can prevent lactose from reaching the colon undigested. For bean-heavy meals, an enzyme called alpha-galactosidase (sold as Beano) breaks down raffinose before bacteria get to it. A low-FODMAP diet, ideally guided by a dietitian, can help people with IBS systematically reduce fermentation while still maintaining nutritional balance. For conditions like celiac disease, a gluten-free diet resolves the underlying absorption problem, and the sour gas typically clears with it.
