Your feet stink because they’re home to massive colonies of bacteria feeding on your sweat, and your feet produce more sweat than almost any other part of your body. Each foot has roughly 250,000 sweat glands, and when that moisture gets trapped inside socks and shoes, bacteria break it down into acids that smell sour, cheesy, or downright rotten. The good news: persistent foot odor almost always has a fixable cause.
What Actually Creates the Smell
The odor isn’t coming from sweat itself. Fresh sweat is mostly water and salt, and it’s essentially odorless. The problem starts when bacteria on your skin’s surface feed on that sweat and on dead skin cells, then release waste products. One of the main culprits is a fatty acid called isovaleric acid, produced by Staphylococcus epidermidis, a bacterium that normally lives on everyone’s skin. When this species overgrows in warm, damp conditions, the acid it produces gives off that classic sour-cheese foot smell.
Bacteria, fungi, and other microbes thrive in heat, moisture, and darkness. The inside of a closed shoe checks all three boxes. Your feet sweat throughout the day, the moisture has nowhere to evaporate, and temperatures climb. That’s a perfect incubator. People who wear the same pair of shoes every day without letting them dry out tend to have worse odor because the bacteria never lose their foothold.
When It’s More Than Normal Sweat
If your foot odor is unusually strong or has a sulfuric, rotten-egg quality, a skin condition called pitted keratolysis may be involved. This bacterial infection creates tiny crater-like pits on the soles of your feet, especially on the ball and heel. The bacteria responsible produce sulfur compounds (thiols, sulfides, and thioesters) that smell significantly worse than ordinary foot sweat. Pitted keratolysis is common in people who spend long hours on their feet in closed shoes, and it often goes undiagnosed because people assume it’s just “bad foot odor.” If you notice small, punched-out pits in your skin along with the smell, that’s the telltale sign.
Athlete’s foot, a contagious fungal infection, also changes how your feet smell. It tends to produce a foul, yeasty, or cheesy odor that’s distinct from regular sweat-based stink. You’ll usually notice itching, peeling, or cracked skin between the toes alongside the smell. Staph infections on the feet also lean cheesy or yeasty. Each type of microbe produces its own signature odor profile.
Hyperhidrosis and Excessive Sweating
Some people’s feet simply sweat far more than average, a condition called plantar hyperhidrosis. If your socks are consistently soaked through by midday, or you leave damp footprints on tile floors, you likely fall into this category. The excess moisture doesn’t just amplify bacterial growth; it also softens the outer layer of skin, giving bacteria more material to break down and producing more odor as a result.
Stress makes things worse through a different mechanism. When you’re anxious or under pressure, your body activates apocrine sweat glands, which produce a thicker, stickier type of sweat compared to the watery cooling sweat from eccrine glands. Bacteria break down apocrine sweat more aggressively, which is why stress sweat tends to smell stronger. If you notice your feet smell worse on high-pressure days at work, that’s not your imagination.
Foods That Make It Worse
What you eat can show up in your sweat. When your body digests garlic, onions, curry, and cumin, it produces sulfur-like compounds that circulate through your bloodstream and get excreted through sweat glands, including the ones on your feet. These compounds react with skin bacteria and intensify odor. Cutting back on these foods won’t eliminate foot odor on its own, but if you eat them frequently, they could be adding a noticeable layer to the problem.
How to Fix Persistent Foot Odor
Daily Hygiene Changes
Washing your feet with soap every day sounds obvious, but most people just let soapy shower water run over them without scrubbing. Use a washcloth or brush to physically scrub between your toes and across the soles, where dead skin and bacteria concentrate. Dry your feet thoroughly afterward, especially between the toes, since leaving moisture behind just restarts the cycle.
Rotate your shoes so you never wear the same pair two days in a row. Each pair needs at least 24 hours to fully dry out. If you can, remove insoles and let them air separately. Moisture-wicking socks made from merino wool or synthetic athletic fabrics pull sweat away from skin far better than cotton, which absorbs moisture and holds it against your foot.
Vinegar Soaks
A dilute vinegar soak creates an acidic environment that inhibits bacterial growth. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar into one pint of warm water and soak your feet for about 30 minutes. Doing this a few times per week can reduce the bacterial population on your skin and noticeably cut down on odor. The acidity also helps dry out the outer layer of skin, making it less hospitable to the microbes responsible for the smell.
Antiperspirants for Your Feet
The same aluminum-based antiperspirant you use on your armpits works on your feet. For mild cases, a regular roll-on applied to dry soles at bedtime can reduce sweating enough to make a difference. For more severe sweating, a clinical-strength product with 20% aluminum chloride is the standard approach. Apply it at night, wrap your feet in plastic wrap, and cover with socks to keep the product in contact with your skin. It temporarily blocks sweat glands and can dramatically reduce moisture within a week or two of consistent use.
Treating Underlying Infections
If you suspect athlete’s foot, over-the-counter antifungal creams or sprays applied daily for two to four weeks typically clear the infection and the odor that comes with it. Pitted keratolysis usually requires a prescription antibacterial cream or gel, so it’s worth getting that one looked at if you see pitting on your soles. Once the infection resolves, the sulfuric odor disappears with it.
Why Some People Smell Worse Than Others
Genetics play a real role. People vary in how much they sweat, what their sweat contains, and which bacterial species dominate their skin’s microbiome. Hormonal shifts during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause can all increase sweating and change sweat composition. Certain medications also increase perspiration as a side effect. If your foot odor changed suddenly or worsened dramatically without an obvious cause like new shoes or a lifestyle change, a hormonal or metabolic shift could be behind it.
Weight and fitness level matter too. Carrying extra weight increases the heat your body generates, which triggers more sweating across the board. People who are on their feet all day, especially in work boots or non-breathable footwear, face a compounding problem: more sweat, less ventilation, longer exposure time. Switching to breathable footwear or using a second pair of socks midday can make a surprising difference for people in these situations.
