Why Do My Feet Smell Bad and How to Fix It

Your feet smell bad because bacteria on your skin are feeding on your sweat and dead skin cells, releasing foul-smelling waste products in the process. The soles of your feet pack 250 to 500 sweat glands per square centimeter, making them one of the sweatiest parts of your body. Seal all that moisture inside a shoe, and you’ve created an ideal environment for odor-producing bacteria to thrive.

What Actually Creates the Smell

Foot odor isn’t caused by sweat itself. Sweat from your feet is mostly water and salt, and it’s essentially odorless when it first leaves the gland. The smell comes from bacteria that live naturally on your skin breaking down amino acids found in sweat and dead skin. Different bacteria produce different compounds, which is why foot odor can range from sour and vinegar-like to cheesy or even sulfuric.

One common skin bacterium breaks down an amino acid called leucine in your sweat, producing a compound called isovaleric acid. That’s the sour, vinegar-like smell many people notice. Another type of bacterium feeds on dead skin cells and converts a different amino acid, methionine, into a sulfur-containing gas. That one is responsible for the cheesy or rotten-egg quality some people’s feet have. A third species can produce sulfuric compounds that smell distinctly like rotten eggs. The specific mix of bacteria on your skin determines your particular brand of foot odor, and that mix varies from person to person.

Why Shoes Make It Worse

Your feet can produce about half a pint of sweat per day. When you’re barefoot or in open sandals, that moisture evaporates before bacteria can do much with it. Shoes change the equation entirely. Non-breathable synthetic footwear traps heat and sweat, turning the inside of your shoe into what researchers describe as a “mini-sauna.” Warm, dark, and damp: it’s the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.

Material matters. Genuine leather has a porous structure that allows some ventilation, while plastic-based synthetics and solid rubber soles block airflow almost completely. Shoes lined with plastic or packed with synthetic padding against the foot are the worst offenders, even if the outer material is leather. Socks play a role too. Cotton absorbs moisture but holds it against your skin, while moisture-wicking synthetic or wool-blend socks pull sweat away from the surface.

Wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row compounds the problem. Shoes need at least 24 hours to dry out fully. If they never get that chance, bacteria colonies keep growing in the residual moisture.

When Excessive Sweating Is the Problem

Some people’s feet sweat far more than normal, a condition called plantar hyperhidrosis. About 2.8% of the U.S. population has focal hyperhidrosis, and feet are affected in roughly 29% of those cases. It typically peaks in your twenties or thirties and produces bilateral sweating, meaning both feet are affected equally. If your socks are consistently soaked through even when you’re sitting still in a cool room, hyperhidrosis may be driving your foot odor.

For hyperhidrosis-related odor, over-the-counter antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride can help. Products with 10% to 15% concentrations are widely available, though higher concentrations (up to 30% or 40%) are sometimes compounded for the palms and soles. In clinical studies, 84% of patients with plantar hyperhidrosis reported good-to-excellent results with aluminum chloride treatment. You apply it to dry feet at night, let it work while you sleep, and wash it off in the morning.

Athlete’s Foot and Bacterial Infections

Fungal infections like athlete’s foot can intensify foot odor. The fungus itself disrupts the skin barrier, causing peeling and cracking that gives bacteria more dead skin to feed on. In some cases, athlete’s foot leads to a secondary bacterial infection, especially in people with weakened immune systems or diabetes. Signs that a simple case of smelly feet has progressed to something more serious include swelling, pus, fever, or skin that looks deeply pitted or crater-like on the soles.

Pitted keratolysis is a bacterial skin condition worth knowing about. It creates small, shallow pits on the soles and produces a distinctly foul, sulfuric smell that’s noticeably worse than ordinary foot odor. It’s commonly mistaken for a fungal infection but requires different treatment.

What Different Smells Can Tell You

Most foot odor is harmless, but certain smells can signal something beyond normal bacterial activity. A vinegar smell is the most common and least concerning. A cheesy or yeasty odor points to specific bacterial strains but is still typical. A bleach-like odor, on the other hand, can sometimes indicate that your kidneys or liver aren’t filtering toxins properly.

Diabetes can affect foot odor in several ways. It sometimes causes excessive sweating, amplifying the usual vinegar smell. Poorly managed diabetes can also reduce sensation in the feet, meaning you might injure your foot without noticing. An untreated wound can develop a dangerous, foul-smelling infection. If your body odor takes on a fruity quality, that could indicate diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious condition where high ketone levels increase blood acidity. Some diabetes medications can even cause phantom odor perception, where you think you smell something that isn’t there.

How to Reduce Foot Odor

Washing your feet with soap daily sounds obvious, but many people let shower water run over their feet without actually scrubbing them. Bacteria hide between toes and in the crevices around toenails. Use a washcloth or brush, pay attention to the spaces between your toes, and dry your feet thoroughly afterward. Moisture left between toes after a shower feeds the same bacteria you just tried to wash away.

Vinegar soaks can help kill odor-causing bacteria and fungi. Mix two parts warm water with one part vinegar and soak your feet for up to 20 minutes. The acetic acid in vinegar is antimicrobial, and this is a low-cost option you can repeat several times a week.

Beyond washing, a few practical changes make a significant difference:

  • Rotate your shoes. Give each pair at least a full day to air out before wearing them again.
  • Choose breathable materials. Leather or canvas shoes ventilate better than synthetic alternatives. Avoid plastic-lined interiors.
  • Switch socks midday. If your feet sweat heavily, changing into a fresh pair after lunch cuts down on the bacterial buffet.
  • Use an antiperspirant. Standard underarm antiperspirant works on feet too. Apply it to clean, dry soles at bedtime.
  • Try antifungal powder. If your foot odor comes with itching, peeling, or redness between your toes, an over-the-counter antifungal powder addresses the fungal component while absorbing excess moisture.

For persistent odor that doesn’t respond to these measures, prescription-strength aluminum chloride solutions or other medical interventions are available. The key insight is that foot odor is almost always a moisture and bacteria problem, so any strategy that reduces one or both of those will help.
