That sour, vinegar-like smell coming from your feet is caused by specific acids that bacteria produce as they feed on your sweat. Your feet have roughly 250,000 sweat glands, more per square inch than anywhere else on your body, and the warm, moist environment inside your shoes creates ideal conditions for bacteria to thrive and generate those sharp, acidic odors.
What Creates the Sour Smell
The sour smell is distinct from the more common “cheesy” foot odor, and the difference comes down to which bacteria are doing the work. The vinegar-like sourness is produced by bacteria in the Propionibacterium family, which live inside the ducts of your skin’s oil glands. As they break down components of your sweat and skin oils, they release propionic acid, a compound chemically similar to acetic acid (the main ingredient in vinegar). That’s why the smell registers as distinctly sour rather than musty or rancid.
Other bacteria contribute different notes to the overall odor profile. Staphylococcus epidermidis, one of the most common skin residents, breaks down an amino acid called leucine in your sweat and converts it into isovaleric acid. This compound has a sharp, sweaty-feet smell that leans more cheesy than sour. When multiple bacterial species are active at once, which is the normal state of affairs, you get a layered smell that can shift between sour, cheesy, and sweaty depending on conditions.
Members of the Corynebacterium genus also play a role, producing volatile fatty acids that add to the overall funk. Your feet essentially host a small ecosystem, and the “flavor” of the smell depends on which species are most active at any given time. If you’re noticing a specifically sour or vinegar-like quality, propionic acid is the most likely culprit.
Why Some People’s Feet Smell Worse
Everyone has bacteria on their feet, but several factors determine whether those bacteria produce enough odor to be noticeable. The biggest variable is moisture. Bacteria multiply faster in damp environments, so anything that increases sweating or traps moisture against your skin amplifies the smell. Synthetic socks, non-breathable shoes, and long hours on your feet all create the conditions bacteria love.
Some people simply sweat more. Hyperhidrosis, a condition defined by excessive sweating that occurs at least weekly for six months or more, affects the feet commonly. Bromhidrosis is the clinical term for chronically offensive body odor. It’s closely linked with excessive sweating because the odor comes from bacteria transforming your sweat into volatile, smelly molecules. One complicating factor: some people with bromhidrosis can’t detect their own odor due to selective anosmia, meaning they’ve become nose-blind to it. If others mention the smell before you notice it yourself, that’s worth paying attention to.
When Fungal Infections Make It Worse
Athlete’s foot on its own doesn’t necessarily produce a strong sour smell, but it frequently sets the stage for one. Fungal infections damage the outer layer of skin, and when excess moisture is added to the mix, normally harmless bacteria in your toe web spaces begin to proliferate. This transforms a simple fungal infection into what dermatologists call a mixed infection of bacteria and fungi. The bacteria that colonize the damaged, soggy skin between your toes are often the same species responsible for foot odor.
The progression is recognizable. It starts with scaly, itchy skin between the toes and can advance to white, macerated (waterlogged), and distinctly malodorous toe webs. If your sour foot smell is concentrated between your toes and accompanied by peeling, cracking, or whitish soggy skin, a fungal infection with secondary bacterial overgrowth is a likely explanation. Treating only the fungus without addressing the bacterial component often leaves the smell unresolved.
Erythrasma, a bacterial skin infection that can affect the feet, presents as well-defined pink or brown patches with fine scaling and small cracks in the skin. It’s sometimes mistaken for a fungal infection but requires different treatment.
Practical Ways to Reduce the Smell
Since the sour smell comes from bacterial metabolism, the strategy is straightforward: reduce bacteria, reduce moisture, or both.
Washing technique matters more than frequency. Scrubbing between your toes with soap disrupts the bacterial colonies where they’re most concentrated. Simply letting soapy water run over your feet in the shower isn’t enough. Dry thoroughly between your toes afterward, since residual moisture restarts the cycle immediately.
Vinegar soaks lower the bacterial load. A foot soak using one part vinegar to two parts warm water, for up to 20 minutes daily, creates an acidic environment that’s inhospitable to many odor-causing bacteria. Fill a basin with enough of this mixture to cover your feet and repeat daily until the smell improves. The acidity also helps manage the skin pH that bacteria exploit.
Sock material makes a measurable difference. Copper-infused and silver-infused fabrics have been tested against common skin bacteria, with treated textiles achieving bacterial reductions above 90% and in some cases exceeding 99%. These antimicrobial effects held up even after 20 washes. Merino wool and moisture-wicking synthetic blends also outperform standard cotton, which absorbs sweat and holds it against the skin.
Rotate your shoes. Wearing the same pair two days in a row doesn’t give them enough time to dry out completely. Alternating between at least two pairs allows each one to air out for 24 hours or more. Removing insoles to dry separately speeds up the process. Be cautious about UV shoe sanitizer devices; the Federal Trade Commission has taken action against companies that claimed their UV products kill 99.9% of bacteria and fungi in shoes, finding those claims lacked reliable scientific evidence.
Antiperspirant works on feet, not just underarms. Aluminum-based antiperspirants applied to the soles of your feet at night reduce sweating by temporarily blocking sweat gland output. This targets the root cause for people whose primary issue is excessive moisture rather than poor hygiene.
Signs the Smell Points to Something Else
A sour foot smell that doesn’t respond to basic hygiene measures, shoe rotation, and moisture management may indicate an underlying issue. Persistent white, soggy, or cracked skin between the toes suggests a mixed bacterial-fungal infection that benefits from targeted treatment rather than home remedies alone. Skin that appears pink or brown with fine scaling could point to erythrasma.
A sudden change in foot odor without a change in habits, shoes, or activity level can occasionally signal metabolic shifts. Isovaleric acidemia, a rare genetic condition, produces a distinctive sweaty-feet odor from a buildup of isovaleric acid in the body. This is typically identified in infancy, but milder forms can go undetected. Diabetes, kidney disease, and thyroid conditions can also alter sweat composition in ways that change body odor.
If your feet sweat heavily enough to soak through socks, leave wet footprints on floors, or make it difficult to wear sandals without slipping, that level of sweating goes beyond normal variation and has specific treatment options ranging from prescription-strength antiperspirants to procedures that target the sweat glands directly.
