Easy bruising happens when small blood vessels near the skin’s surface break with minimal impact, leaking blood into surrounding tissue. For most people, it comes down to a combination of thinner skin, weaker blood vessels, or something interfering with normal clotting. The causes range from completely harmless (aging, genetics, sun damage) to worth investigating (nutrient deficiencies, medications, or an underlying bleeding disorder).
How Bruises Form
A bruise is simply blood pooling under the skin after tiny blood vessels called capillaries rupture. Your body treats this like any minor injury: it sends clotting factors and platelets to seal the leak, then gradually reabsorbs the trapped blood. That cleanup process is what creates the familiar color changes. A fresh bruise starts pinkish-red, shifts to deep blue or purple, then fades through violet, green, and dark yellow before disappearing entirely. Most bruises heal completely within about two weeks.
When you bruise easily, one or more parts of this system aren’t working at full strength. Either your blood vessels break too readily, your skin doesn’t cushion them well enough, or your clotting process is slower than normal.
Aging and Sun Damage
The most common reason people bruise more easily over time is structural change in the skin itself. As you age, your skin loses collagen and the fatty layer underneath thins out. That means the small blood vessels sitting in your skin have less cushioning around them and less connective tissue holding them in place. Even a light bump can tear them open.
Chronic sun exposure accelerates this dramatically. Years of ultraviolet radiation break down the connective tissue in the deeper layers of skin, leaving blood vessels poorly supported and fragile. This is why older adults often develop dark purple bruises on their forearms and hands with no memory of bumping into anything. The condition is sometimes called actinic purpura, and it’s especially common on sun-exposed areas. The skin there becomes so thin that even minor contact or a slight shearing force is enough to rupture vessels and cause noticeable bruising. Regular use of moisturizers on the arms and legs may help reduce some of this tearing and bruising from everyday minor trauma.
Medications That Increase Bruising
If you’ve started bruising more and recently began a new medication, that’s likely the connection. Several common drug classes interfere with your blood’s ability to clot.
- Blood thinners (anticoagulants) like warfarin, apixaban, and rivaroxaban work by disrupting clotting proteins. They’re widely prescribed for heart conditions and blood clot prevention, and bruising is one of the most predictable side effects.
- Antiplatelet drugs like aspirin and clopidogrel make platelets less “sticky,” so they don’t clump together as quickly at an injury site. Even low-dose daily aspirin can noticeably increase bruising.
- Corticosteroids are a less obvious culprit. Long-term use of steroids, whether oral, inhaled, topical, or nasal, reduces collagen production in the skin. Even low doses of inhaled corticosteroids (commonly used for asthma) can cause paper-thin skin and increased bruising over time. The effect is cumulative, so using multiple forms of steroids together raises the risk further.
If you’re on any of these medications, easy bruising doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong beyond the expected side effect. But if bruising becomes severe or you notice bleeding gums, nosebleeds, or blood in your urine, that’s worth flagging with your prescriber.
Supplements You Might Not Suspect
Several popular dietary supplements can also affect clotting, particularly if you’re already taking a blood thinner. Garlic supplements have a strong association with increased bleeding risk on their own. Ginkgo biloba, turmeric, chamomile, fenugreek, milk thistle, and chondroitin-glucosamine have all been linked to bleeding risk when combined with anticoagulants. If you bruise easily and take any of these regularly, the supplement could be contributing, especially in combination with medications.
Nutritional Deficiencies
Two vitamins play direct roles in preventing bruises, and being low in either one can make a real difference.
Vitamin C is essential for building collagen, the protein that gives your blood vessel walls their structure and strength. Without enough of it, vessels become fragile and leak more easily. Severe deficiency (scurvy) causes widespread bruising, bleeding gums, and poor wound healing, but even mild insufficiency can weaken vessel integrity enough that you bruise from lighter impacts than you’d expect. Citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, and broccoli are among the richest sources.
Vitamin K is what your body needs to form blood clots. Without adequate vitamin K, even small vessel breaks take longer to seal, allowing more blood to leak into surrounding tissue. Deficiency is uncommon in adults who eat a varied diet (leafy greens are packed with it), but it can develop in people with digestive conditions that impair fat absorption, since vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin.
Bleeding Disorders
Sometimes easy bruising signals an inherited condition that affects how your blood clots. The most common is von Willebrand disease, which affects up to 1% of the U.S. population, roughly 3.2 million people. Many don’t know they have it. The disease involves a shortage or malfunction of a specific clotting protein, and its hallmark symptoms include bruising easily, heavy or prolonged menstrual periods, and excessive bleeding after dental work or surgery.
Diagnosis involves blood tests that measure the amount of clotting proteins present and whether they’re functioning properly. A doctor will also ask about family history, since the condition is genetic. If close relatives have similar bleeding patterns, that’s a meaningful clue. Most forms of von Willebrand disease are mild and manageable once identified, but knowing you have it matters before any planned surgery or dental procedure.
Other, rarer conditions that cause easy bruising include hemophilia and platelet function disorders. These typically show up earlier in life and cause more dramatic symptoms than occasional unexplained bruises.
Hormonal and Sex-Based Differences
Women bruise more easily than men, on average. This is partly because estrogen can weaken blood vessel walls and partly because women tend to carry a thinner layer of collagen in the skin. Hormonal fluctuations during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or menopause can all temporarily increase bruising. This is one of the most common explanations for easy bruising in otherwise healthy younger women.
When Bruising Suggests Something Serious
Most easy bruising is benign. But certain patterns are worth taking seriously. Bruises that may point to an underlying bleeding disorder tend to be spontaneous (appearing without any known injury), numerous (more than five at a time), larger than a centimeter, or located in unusual spots like the trunk, back, or face rather than the typical shins and forearms.
Bruising accompanied by other bleeding symptoms, like frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums, blood in stool or urine, or unusually heavy periods, strengthens the case for testing. A doctor can evaluate with a physical exam and targeted blood work to check platelet counts, clotting times, and specific clotting factor levels. In many cases, the tests come back normal and the bruising is simply a product of skin type, age, or a medication side effect. But ruling out a clotting disorder is straightforward and worth doing if the pattern is new, worsening, or doesn’t match any obvious explanation.
