Morning stiffness is the dominant symptom here, along with an aching or burning sensation that worsens with activities like climbing stairs or pushing off while walking. You might notice the tendon itself feels thicker than usual or is tender to the touch. Unlike plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon pain tends to get worse with hills, speed, or prolonged loading rather than improving with movement.

Nerve-Related Pain

Tarsal tunnel syndrome involves compression of a nerve on the inner side of the ankle. The symptoms feel distinctly different from fascial pain: burning, tingling, or numbness that radiates into the bottom of your foot and toes, sometimes with a sense of weakness. Two types matter most: stretches that target the plantar fascia itself and stretches for the calf muscles (which connect to the heel through the Achilles tendon and directly influence tension on the fascia).

What you put on your feet matters more than most people realize. Walking barefoot on hard floors, especially first thing in the morning, is one of the worst things you can do with an irritated plantar fascia. A physical therapist can identify specific areas of stiffness or restriction that are contributing to your symptoms and address them directly.

Foot taping is another tool with strong short-term evidence. Rigid athletic tape or elastic kinesiology tape applied in specific patterns can support the arch and offload the fascia, providing noticeable relief within days. It’s most useful during the early, more painful phase while stretching and strengthening take hold over the longer term.

How Long Recovery Takes

Most people with plantar fasciitis improve significantly within several months of consistent stretching, supportive footwear, and activity modification. It’s not a fast process. The tissue needs time to heal, and pushing through sharp pain tends to set recovery back. Reducing high-impact activities temporarily, like running on pavement, and substituting lower-impact options like cycling or swimming can keep you active without aggravating the fascia.
