Blood in your tissue after blowing your nose usually comes from tiny, fragile blood vessels just inside your nostrils that have cracked or burst. The inside of your nose is lined with a dense network of small blood vessels sitting very close to the surface, and it doesn’t take much to break one open. In most cases, the cause is something straightforward like dry air, a cold, or blowing too hard.
Why Your Nose Bleeds So Easily
The front part of your nasal septum, the thin wall between your nostrils, contains a cluster of blood vessels packed tightly together near the surface. This area is where the vast majority of nosebleeds originate. Because the tissue covering these vessels is thin and delicate, even minor irritation can erode the lining, expose a vessel, and cause it to break.
Blowing your nose creates a burst of pressure inside the nasal cavity. If the lining is already dry, inflamed, or irritated, that pressure is often enough to rupture one of these superficial blood vessels. The result ranges from faint pink streaks in your mucus to a full nosebleed, depending on how damaged the tissue is and how hard you blew.
The Most Common Causes
Dry air is the leading environmental trigger. During winter months or in arid climates, the moisture in your nasal lining evaporates faster than your body can replace it. The tissue cracks, and the exposed blood vessels bleed with minimal provocation. Heated indoor air makes this worse because furnaces and radiators strip humidity from the room.
Colds, sinus infections, and allergies all increase blood flow to the nasal tissues as part of the inflammatory response. The lining swells, becomes congested, and the blood vessels dilate. Frequent nose blowing during an illness adds repeated mechanical stress to tissue that’s already engorged and fragile. This combination is why bloody mucus is especially common when you’re sick.
Nose picking, even casual or unconscious rubbing, directly damages the lining and is one of the most frequent causes of recurrent bleeding. Physical trauma like bumps or falls can also rupture vessels, as can inserting objects into the nose.
Medications That Increase Bleeding
If you use a steroid nasal spray for allergies, it may be contributing to the problem. Research across multiple formulations found that corticosteroid nasal sprays increase the risk of nosebleeds by roughly 48% compared to placebo. Some formulations carry a higher risk than others, so if you’re noticing frequent blood after starting a spray, it’s worth mentioning to your prescriber.
Blood thinners, including aspirin and prescription anticoagulants, don’t cause nosebleeds on their own but make any bleeding harder to stop. A tiny vessel break that would normally seal itself in seconds can keep oozing, leaving noticeable blood in your tissue each time you blow.
You’re Probably Blowing Too Hard
Most people blow their nose with both nostrils open and use far more force than necessary. Board-certified allergist Purvi Parikh recommends a gentler approach: press one nostril closed with your finger, then blow gently out of the open side into a tissue. Repeat on the other side. If you sound like a goose honking, you’re blowing too hard.
Forceful blowing does more than just break blood vessels. It can push infected mucus back into your sinuses, triggering a sinus infection, or force mucus into the tube connecting your nose to your middle ear, leading to an ear infection. In rare cases, blowing hard enough can even rupture an eardrum. Gentle, one-nostril-at-a-time blowing reduces all of these risks.
How to Keep Your Nasal Lining Intact
Keeping the inside of your nose moist is the single most effective way to prevent bleeding. Saline nasal spray or saline gel, used twice a day, replaces the moisture that dry air strips away. In a randomized clinical trial, saline alone significantly reduced nosebleed severity over 12 and 24 weeks. It’s cheap, available without a prescription, and has no side effects.
A thin layer of petroleum jelly applied just inside each nostril with a clean finger also works well, particularly at bedtime when hours of breathing dry heated air can do the most damage. Running a humidifier in your bedroom during winter months helps maintain ambient moisture so your nasal lining doesn’t dry out overnight.
If you’re recovering from a nosebleed or notice blood in your tissue regularly, avoid picking or rubbing the inside of your nose. A scab that forms over a healing vessel is easy to dislodge, and the cycle of bleeding, scabbing, and re-bleeding can persist for weeks.
When Blood in Your Tissue Signals Something Bigger
Occasional pink-tinged mucus during cold and flu season, after a dry night, or during allergy flare-ups is normal and not a cause for concern. But certain patterns deserve attention.
Repeated nosebleeds can sometimes point to an underlying condition like high blood pressure, a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia or von Willebrand disease, or, rarely, a growth in the nose or sinuses. If you’re getting frequent nosebleeds and also noticing unusual bruising elsewhere on your body, that combination raises the possibility of a clotting problem.
Adults between 45 and 80 are at higher risk for nosebleeds because blood clots more slowly with age, and conditions like high blood pressure and arterial stiffening become more common. A nosebleed that lasts longer than 30 minutes or involves heavy blood loss needs emergency medical care, as does any nosebleed following a head injury.
