The good news is that many of the most common reasons are temporary or treatable once identified. Understanding the pattern of your pain, when it started, and what else is going on in your body can help narrow things down considerably.

Your Body Is Fighting an Infection

The most common reason for sudden, all-over body aches is a viral infection. When your immune system detects a virus like the flu or COVID-19, it releases proteins called cytokines to coordinate the fight. These cytokines trigger widespread inflammation, and that inflammation is what makes your muscles and joints ache. You’re not hurting because the virus is attacking your muscles directly. You’re hurting because your own immune response is turning up the heat on everything at once.

In most cases, body aches from an infection resolve within a few days to a week. If the pain is accompanied by fever, fatigue, sore throat, or congestion, an infection is the most likely explanation. COVID-19 and influenza are particularly known for intense, whole-body soreness that can feel disproportionate to other symptoms.

Poor Sleep Lowers Your Pain Threshold

Even one night of bad sleep measurably changes how your body processes pain. A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience found that after a single night of sleep deprivation, participants registered pain at significantly lower stimulus levels than when they were well-rested. Sleep loss doesn’t just make you tired. It actually rewires your brain’s pain-processing system, reducing activity in a region called the nucleus accumbens that normally helps dampen pain signals through dopamine pathways.

If you’ve been sleeping poorly for several nights or weeks, this effect compounds. Your baseline pain tolerance drops, and sensations that normally wouldn’t register, like minor muscle tension or joint stiffness, start to feel genuinely painful. The muscles and joints themselves aren’t damaged, but the nervous system amplifies pain signals, making normal sensations feel painful.

Diagnosis is based on two measurements: the number of body regions affected and the severity of accompanying symptoms like fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, and cognitive difficulties (often called “fibro fog”). To meet current diagnostic criteria, you need pain in at least four body regions along with significant symptom severity scores. Diagnosis happens after other causes have been ruled out.

Electrolyte Imbalances and Dehydration

Electrolytes like magnesium, potassium, and calcium are essential for normal muscle and nerve function. Dehydration is the most common trigger, but heavy sweating, certain medications (especially diuretics), and poor dietary intake can also throw off your electrolyte levels.
