Why Does My Bum Still Smell After Washing?

A persistent smell around your bum after washing is surprisingly common, and it usually comes down to biology rather than poor hygiene. The perianal area contains a high concentration of apocrine sweat glands, the same type found in your armpits, and these glands produce a fluid that bacteria on your skin feed on. The odor you notice isn’t from the sweat itself. It’s from what bacteria produce after breaking it down. In some cases, though, the smell points to a specific condition worth addressing.

Why Bacteria Create Odor After You’ve Cleaned

Your body has two types of sweat glands. The ones around your groin and buttocks are apocrine glands, which release a thick fluid made of proteins, lipids, fatty acids, and steroids into hair follicles. This fluid is actually odorless when it first leaves the gland. The smell develops when bacteria on your skin, including Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium species, break that fluid down into volatile compounds.

Different bacteria produce different smells. Some release sulfur compounds that create an onion-like odor. Others break down fatty acids into a goat-like or cumin-like scent. Still others metabolize glycerol and lactic acid into acetic and propionic acid, which smells like vinegar. These bacteria live in and around hair follicles and skin folds, areas that a quick wash with soap won’t fully reach or sterilize. Within minutes of drying off, the cycle starts again.

The perianal area is also warm, moist, and enclosed by clothing for most of the day. That combination creates ideal conditions for rapid bacterial regrowth. So even immediately after a thorough shower, the bacteria that drive odor production are already present and active.

Overwashing Can Make It Worse

If the smell bothers you, your instinct is probably to scrub harder or use stronger soap. This often backfires. Aggressive cleaning damages the thin, sensitive skin around the anus, stripping away protective oils and causing tiny cracks in the skin barrier. Once that barrier is compromised, moisture gets trapped against raw skin, creating even better conditions for bacterial growth and odor.

Research published in a clinical review of pruritus ani (chronic anal itching) describes this as a “deleterious positive feedback loop.” Patients react to irritation and odor by cleaning more aggressively, which worsens irritation, which drives more cleaning. Baby wipes and wet wipes are common culprits here. Many contain alcohol, fragrances, and astringents that damage already compromised perianal skin. Witch hazel pads and scented soap do the same.

The better approach is gentler: wash with plain warm water or a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry rather than rubbing. If you want to clean between showers, use a damp cloth or unscented wipes designed for sensitive skin, then pat dry thoroughly. Keeping the area dry matters more than keeping it “sterile.”

Fecal Seepage You Might Not Notice

Sometimes the smell isn’t coming from your skin at all. Small amounts of stool or mucus can leak from the anus without you being fully aware of it, a condition called fecal seepage. This is different from full incontinence. It can leave a faint smell that persists no matter how well you wash the outside.

Several things cause this. Hemorrhoids, even internal ones you can’t see or feel, can prevent the muscles around your anus from closing completely. That gap lets small amounts of stool or mucus escape. Weakened pelvic floor muscles, sometimes from childbirth, surgery, or chronic straining during bowel movements, can do the same. A diet low in fiber that leads to incomplete bowel movements can leave residual stool in the rectum that slowly seeps out afterward.

If you notice occasional staining on your underwear or a smell that returns within an hour of showering, fecal seepage is a likely explanation. Increasing your fiber intake, staying hydrated, and making sure you fully empty your bowels can help. Pelvic floor exercises also strengthen the muscles that keep the anal sphincter sealed.

Skin Conditions That Trap Odor

A few skin conditions specifically affect the perianal area and can produce persistent odor that washing alone won’t resolve.

Anal yeast infections cause intense itching, redness, burning, and irritated skin around the anus. The overgrowth of yeast changes the local environment in a way that can produce a musty or sour smell. If your main symptoms are itching and redness alongside the odor, a yeast infection is worth considering, especially if you’ve recently taken antibiotics or have diabetes.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic condition where painful lumps form under the skin in areas where skin rubs together, including the buttocks and groin. These lumps can break open and drain pus with a noticeable odor. It often starts as a single painful bump that lasts for weeks or months. Unlike a regular boil, it tends to recur in the same areas and can leave tunnels under the skin that continue to drain.

An anal fistula, a small tunnel that forms between the inside of the anal canal and the skin near the anus, can drain fluid that includes pus, blood, or fecal material. This drainage often has a foul smell that no amount of washing will eliminate because the source is internal. Fistulas typically develop after an anal abscess and produce persistent, unexplained wetness around the anus.

Foods That Intensify the Smell

What you eat directly affects how your sweat and stool smell, and this concentrates in the perianal area where apocrine glands and the digestive tract both contribute.

Foods high in sulfur compounds are the most common dietary culprits. Garlic, onions, cabbage, broccoli, and mushrooms all contain sulfides that your body processes and partially excretes through sweat. Alcohol and curry can also intensify sweat odor. Red meat, egg yolks, and seafood contain compounds that gut bacteria convert into trimethylamine, a chemical with a strong fishy smell that gets released through sweat and urine.

High-protein diets increase ammonia production during digestion, which can raise ammonia levels in sweat. Foods rich in tryptophan, including oats, bananas, cheese, milk, poultry, and chocolate, can be converted by gut bacteria into indole and skatole, compounds that contribute to a fecal odor in sweat. You don’t need to eliminate these foods entirely, but if you notice the smell worsens after eating certain things, reducing your intake can make a measurable difference.

When the Cause Is Metabolic

In rare cases, persistent body odor that doesn’t respond to any hygiene changes has a metabolic origin. Trimethylaminuria is a genetic condition where the body can’t break down trimethylamine, a compound that smells like rotting fish. It accumulates and gets released through sweat, urine, and breath. The odor can be especially noticeable in areas with high sweat gland density, including the groin and perianal area.

This condition is uncommon but underdiagnosed, partly because people assume the smell is a hygiene problem and don’t mention it to their doctor. A urine test can confirm it. If your body odor has been persistent since childhood, has a distinctly fishy quality, and doesn’t improve with dietary or hygiene changes, it’s worth asking about.

Signs That Need Medical Attention

Most perianal odor is manageable with gentler hygiene, dietary adjustments, and better moisture control. But certain symptoms alongside the smell suggest something that needs a doctor’s evaluation: discharge that contains blood or pus, a foul-smelling drainage that appears on your underwear, painful lumps that recur near the anus or buttocks, persistent leakage of stool or mucus, or a bump near the anus that doesn’t heal. These can point to fistulas, hidradenitis suppurativa, or sphincter problems that have straightforward treatments once properly diagnosed.
