Why Does My Dog’s Pee Smell Like Ammonia?

All dog urine contains ammonia, so a faint smell is completely normal. What gets your attention is when that smell becomes sharp, pungent, or noticeably stronger than usual. That shift typically signals one of a few things: your dog isn’t drinking enough water, bacteria are breaking down urea in the urinary tract, or their diet is producing more nitrogenous waste than normal. Less commonly, it points to a liver or kidney problem worth investigating.

Why Urine Naturally Smells Like Ammonia

When your dog digests protein, the process releases nitrogen in the form of ammonia, which is toxic. The liver quickly converts that ammonia into urea, a much safer compound, and ships it to the kidneys for disposal. Urea is the main nitrogen-containing waste product in urine, and it carries a mild ammonia scent on its own. As urine sits (on a pee pad, on grass, on your floor), bacteria in the environment break urea back down into ammonia, which is why old urine smells far worse than fresh.

So some ammonia odor is just the cost of being a protein-eating mammal. The question is really about degree: why does it smell stronger than it used to, or stronger than you’d expect?

Dehydration Is the Most Common Cause

The simplest explanation is concentrated urine. When a dog doesn’t drink enough water, the kidneys pull back as much fluid as possible, leaving behind a smaller volume of urine packed with more waste products. Veterinarians measure this concentration using urine specific gravity. A normally hydrated dog typically falls between 1.015 and 1.045. Once that number climbs above 1.050, the urine is very concentrated, something seen with dehydration, reduced blood flow to the kidneys, or even heart problems.

Concentrated urine is darker in color and carries a much stronger ammonia smell simply because the same amount of urea is dissolved in less water. If your dog’s pee looks deep yellow or amber and smells intense, inadequate water intake is the first thing to rule out. Dogs that eat mostly dry kibble, exercise heavily, or live in warm climates are especially prone to mild chronic dehydration that can fly under the radar.

Urinary Tract Infections

A bacterial urinary tract infection is another frequent culprit, and it produces ammonia through a different pathway. Certain bacteria, including Staphylococcus, Proteus, and Klebsiella species, produce an enzyme called urease that directly converts urea into ammonia inside the urinary tract. This not only creates a sharper smell but also shifts the urine’s pH toward alkaline (above the normal range of 6 to 7.5), which can promote the formation of struvite crystals or stones.

Ammonia odor from a UTI rarely shows up alone. According to Cornell University’s veterinary school, the most common signs of a canine UTI include straining to urinate, frequent small amounts of urination, accidents in the house, foul-smelling urine, excessive licking of the genitals, and blood in the urine. If you’re noticing two or three of these alongside the smell, an infection is high on the list. Diagnosis is straightforward with a urinalysis, and treatment typically involves a course of antibiotics.

High-Protein Diets Increase Nitrogen Waste

Your dog’s body breaks down dietary amino acids that exceed what’s needed for growth and tissue repair. That breakdown releases nitrogen as ammonia, which the liver converts to urea for excretion. The more protein your dog eats, the more urea ends up in the urine. The kidneys actually adapt to this by increasing their filtration rate to clear the extra waste, but the net result is still urine with a higher nitrogen load and a stronger smell.

This is especially noticeable if you’ve recently switched to a higher-protein food, a raw diet, or started adding protein-rich toppers to meals. The urine may smell more potent even though your dog is perfectly healthy. It doesn’t mean the diet is harmful, but it does explain the odor change. If your dog is otherwise acting normal, drinking well, and producing urine that’s a normal straw-yellow color, diet is a likely explanation.

Liver and Kidney Problems

The liver is the main ammonia-processing organ in your dog’s body. In a healthy dog, ammonia from the gut travels through the portal vein directly to the liver, where it’s rapidly converted into urea or used for other metabolic processes. When the liver is failing or when blood bypasses the liver through abnormal blood vessels (called portosystemic shunts), ammonia builds up in the bloodstream. The kidneys try to compensate by secreting more ammonia directly into the urine, but the body’s overall ammonia handling becomes disordered.

Kidney disease can also change urine odor, though sometimes in the opposite direction. Damaged kidneys lose the ability to concentrate urine, which can actually make the urine smell less intense. However, certain types of kidney dysfunction, particularly when combined with dehydration, can increase ammonia production. The combination of dehydration and compromised kidney function is a red flag that warrants bloodwork and a full urinalysis.

Liver-related ammonia issues often come with other signs: lethargy, confusion or disorientation, loss of appetite, vomiting, or a distended belly. In breeds like Dalmatians and English Bulldogs, certain crystal types (ammonium biurate) can appear in the urine and may suggest underlying liver disease even before obvious symptoms develop.

Other Signs to Watch For

A temporary spike in ammonia smell after your dog has been sleeping all night, exercising hard, or eating a protein-heavy meal is usually nothing to worry about. It should resolve once they drink water and their urine dilutes back to normal.

The signs that suggest something beyond normal variation include:

  • Persistently dark urine that doesn’t lighten even when your dog seems to be drinking normally
  • Cloudy or discolored urine, which can indicate infection, blood, or crystals
  • Changes in urination habits like going more frequently, producing very small amounts, or having accidents indoors
  • Blood in the urine, even a faint pink tinge
  • Excessive genital licking, which often signals discomfort in the urinary tract
  • Lethargy, vomiting, or appetite loss alongside the smell change

Reducing the Smell at Home

If your vet has ruled out infection, liver disease, and kidney problems, the ammonia odor is almost certainly a concentration or diet issue. Keeping fresh, clean water available at all times is the single most effective step. Dogs that aren’t enthusiastic drinkers often respond well to a few strategies: adding water or low-sodium broth to their kibble, switching to or incorporating wet food, placing multiple water bowls around the house, or using a pet water fountain (some dogs prefer moving water).

If you’re feeding a very high-protein diet, you don’t necessarily need to change it, but be aware that stronger-smelling urine is a predictable side effect. For dogs that urinate indoors on pee pads, the smell will intensify quickly as environmental bacteria go to work on the urea. Changing pads promptly and using an enzymatic cleaner on any accidents breaks down the urea before it converts to ammonia, which makes a significant difference in household odor.

A vet visit that includes a basic urinalysis can quickly sort out whether the smell reflects a simple hydration issue or something that needs treatment. The test evaluates concentration, pH, the presence of bacteria, crystals, blood cells, and other markers that point directly to the cause.
