Eye burning is almost always a sign that something is irritating the surface of your eye, whether that’s dryness, an allergen, or a chemical in the air. The most common culprit is an unstable tear film, the thin layer of moisture that protects your cornea. When that layer breaks down or evaporates too quickly, the nerve endings on your eye’s surface become exposed and fire off pain signals that you feel as stinging or burning.
Dry Eye and Tear Film Problems
Your tears aren’t just water. They’re a three-layer sandwich of oil, water, and mucus that keeps your cornea smooth and protected. When any of those layers falls short, your eyes lose their shield. The nerves on the surface of your cornea are among the most sensitive in your body, and without adequate tear coverage, they react immediately with burning, stinging, or a gritty “something in my eye” feeling.
Up to 86% of people diagnosed with dry eye have a problem specifically with the oil layer, produced by tiny glands along the edge of your eyelids called meibomian glands. When those glands get clogged, tears evaporate too fast and leave the surface exposed. This is the single most common reason for chronic eye burning. Risk factors include aging (tear production naturally decreases over time), certain medications like antihistamines and decongestants, low-humidity environments, and simply not blinking enough.
Screen Time and Incomplete Blinking
If your eyes burn mostly during or after computer work, your blink pattern is likely the problem. During focused screen tasks, people blink less frequently, but research shows it’s not just the rate that matters. The completeness of each blink may be equally important. An incomplete blink, where your upper lid doesn’t fully meet your lower lid, fails to spread a fresh layer of tears across the whole cornea. In one study, the percentage of incomplete blinks ranged from under 1% to over 56% among participants, and higher rates of incomplete blinking correlated directly with worse symptoms.
Simply telling yourself to blink more doesn’t reliably help. What does help: positioning your screen slightly below eye level so your lids naturally cover more of the eye’s surface, taking breaks every 20 minutes to look at something distant, and using lubricating drops if you spend long stretches at a screen.
Allergies vs. Dryness: How to Tell
Allergic conjunctivitis and dry eye share several symptoms, including redness, watery eyes, and light sensitivity. The key difference is itching. Allergies cause an intense urge to rub your eyes that dry eye rarely matches. If your burning eyes also come with a runny nose or sneezing, allergies are the more likely explanation. Common triggers include pollen, dust, pet dander, mold, and sometimes perfumes or skincare products.
There’s an ironic twist here: one of the most popular treatments for allergies, oral antihistamines, can actually worsen dry eye by reducing tear production. If you’re treating seasonal allergies with pills and your eyes still burn, the medication itself may be contributing. Antihistamine eye drops tend to target ocular symptoms more precisely without drying the tear film as much.
Eyelid Inflammation (Blepharitis)
Blepharitis is chronic inflammation along the edges of your eyelids, and it’s one of the most underdiagnosed causes of burning eyes. You might notice crusty flakes at the base of your eyelashes when you wake up, redness along the lid margin, or a feeling that your eyelids are heavy or irritated. The inflammation disrupts normal oil production from the meibomian glands, which destabilizes the tear film, which exposes corneal nerves. It’s a chain reaction that feeds on itself.
The condition has several forms. Bacterial blepharitis involves overgrowth of normal skin bacteria along the lash line. Seborrheic blepharitis produces greasy, matted lashes. Posterior blepharitis targets the oil glands themselves. All of them alter the composition of your tears and increase inflammation on the eye’s surface.
Warm compresses are a first-line home treatment. Research on the optimal temperature suggests heating a clean cloth to about 45°C (113°F) and holding it against closed lids for 5 to 10 minutes. That warmth reaches the glands inside the lid and softens clogged oils so they can flow again. Temperatures much above that range start to cause discomfort and raise safety concerns. Microwavable eye masks designed for this purpose hold heat more consistently than a washcloth, which cools quickly.
Environmental and Chemical Irritants
Sometimes the cause is straightforward: something in the air is attacking the surface of your eye. Chlorine in swimming pools, cigarette smoke, smog, cleaning products, and household bleach all irritate the eye through direct chemical reaction. Chlorine, for example, reacts with the mucus layer on your eye to form small amounts of hydrochloric acid, which is why pool water stings even at safe concentrations. Eye irritation from chlorine gas begins at concentrations of 5 to 15 parts per million.
Wildfire smoke, industrial fumes, and even strong perfumes can trigger acute burning that resolves once you’re away from the source. If you’re regularly exposed to irritants at work or home, the burning can become chronic as your eye surface stays inflamed.
Contact Lens Irritation
Contact lenses sit directly on your tear film, and any disruption to that relationship can cause burning. Overwearing lenses reduces oxygen flow to the cornea. Dirty or old lenses harbor protein deposits that irritate the surface. But sometimes the lens itself isn’t the issue. Preservatives in contact lens solutions, particularly one called thimerosal (less common now than it once was), can trigger a delayed allergic reaction that causes redness, irritation, and intolerance to wearing lenses. If your eyes burn consistently after inserting freshly cleaned lenses, switching to a preservative-free solution is worth trying.
When Eye Burning Needs Urgent Attention
Most eye burning is annoying but not dangerous. However, burning that comes with any of the following needs prompt evaluation:
- Vision loss or sudden blurring that doesn’t clear with blinking
- Severe light sensitivity that makes it hard to keep your eyes open
- Fever or headache alongside the eye pain
- A rash on your face, which could signal shingles affecting the eye
Chemical splashes from products like bleach or industrial cleaners also warrant immediate action. Flush the eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek care, even if the burning starts to subside.
Relieving Burning Eyes at Home
For everyday dryness-related burning, over-the-counter artificial tears are the simplest fix. If you find yourself reaching for drops more than four times a day, switch to preservative-free single-use vials. The preservatives in bottled drops can themselves irritate eyes when used frequently, which is counterproductive.
Beyond drops, a few practical changes can make a real difference. A humidifier in your bedroom or workspace adds moisture to the air, slowing tear evaporation. Wraparound sunglasses outdoors block wind and allergens. Cleaning your eyelids daily with a warm, damp cloth removes debris and bacteria that fuel inflammation. And if you work at a screen for hours, consciously practicing full, complete blinks (feeling your upper and lower lids touch) matters more than simply blinking faster.
Persistent burning that doesn’t improve with these steps over a couple of weeks often points to meibomian gland dysfunction or chronic blepharitis, both of which benefit from targeted treatment that goes beyond basic artificial tears.
