Groin pain after running is common, accounting for about 10% of all running-related injuries. Hip Labral Tears
The hip joint has a ring of cartilage (the labrum) that deepens the socket and cushions the joint. Repetitive hip flexion during running can gradually wear or tear this cartilage, producing groin pain that feels like it’s coming from deep inside the hip rather than from the muscles. The hallmark signs are a clicking or popping sensation when you move your hip, and a feeling of instability or “catching” during certain movements. The pain often worsens with prolonged sitting, pivoting, or deep squatting, not just running.

Athletic Pubalgia (Sports Hernia)

The pain typically develops gradually and worsens with sprinting, cutting, or any explosive movement. Conditions involving the joint or bone, like pubic symphysis inflammation or labral tears, generally follow longer and less predictable timelines because cartilage heals more slowly than muscle.
Strengthening to Prevent Recurrence
The single most effective exercise for preventing adductor injuries is the Copenhagen adductor bridge. You lie on your side with your top leg supported on a bench or a partner’s shoulder, then lift your body by squeezing your inner thigh. Research on athletes showed that performing about 470 total repetitions over eight weeks reduced injury risk and increased adductor strength by roughly 10%.
A practical way to build up: start with two sets of six repetitions per side, twice a week. Every two weeks, add two repetitions per set, progressing from 2×6 to 2×8, then 2×10, then 2×12. Signs That Need Prompt Attention
Most groin pain after running is musculoskeletal and resolves with rest and strengthening. Groin pain that hasn’t improved at all after two to three weeks of rest also warrants a closer look, since persistent pain may indicate a labral tear, pubic bone inflammation, or athletic pubalgia rather than a simple muscle strain.
