Over-the-counter cold and flu medications are a surprisingly common cause of unexplained fast heartbeats. Oral decongestants like pseudoephedrine (the active ingredient in Sudafed) work by activating your fight-or-flight response to constrict blood vessels and dry up congestion. That same mechanism can cause noticeable changes in heart rate, especially if you’re sensitive to shifts in blood pressure. Some people tolerate these medications fine for years, then have a stronger reaction during a particularly stressful week or when they’re dehydrated.

Diet pills, pre-workout supplements, and energy drinks often contain stimulants that stack on top of your normal caffeine intake. If your heart starts racing and you’ve recently added any new supplement or medication, that’s worth examining first.

Hormonal Shifts and Heart Rate

Fluctuating hormone levels are one of the most common causes of heart palpitations that seem to come out of nowhere, particularly for women. Big surges of hormones during pregnancy, around menstruation, or during menopause can make the heart more prone to racing episodes. If you notice a pattern tied to your cycle or if you’re in perimenopause, hormonal changes are a likely explanation.

Thyroid hormones also play a direct role. An overactive thyroid gland increases your resting heart rate, strengthens the force of each heartbeat, and lowers the resistance in your blood vessels. Blood work typically checks thyroid function, electrolyte levels, and markers of anemia, all of which can cause a fast heart rate. An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to create images of your heart’s structure and blood flow, checking for problems with valves or the heart muscle itself. In cases where a specific rhythm disorder is suspected, an electrophysiology study can map exactly where abnormal electrical signals originate inside the heart by threading thin, flexible sensors through a blood vessel into the heart chambers.

What Your Symptoms Tell You

A heart that races briefly after standing up quickly, during a stressful moment, or after your third coffee is behaving normally. Episodes that last only a few seconds and don’t come with other symptoms are rarely dangerous, even though they can be unsettling.

Pay closer attention if your episodes last several minutes or longer, happen at rest without any identifiable trigger, or come with lightheadedness, chest pain, or shortness of breath. A heart rate that climbs above 150 beats per minute at rest, episodes that cause you to nearly faint or actually lose consciousness, or a heartbeat that feels persistently irregular rather than just fast are all patterns worth bringing to a doctor promptly.
