A congested-sounding kitten almost always has an upper respiratory infection, the feline equivalent of a cold. Two viruses, feline herpesvirus and feline calicivirus, cause the vast majority of cases, often complicated by bacteria. Less commonly, a physical obstruction or environmental irritant is the culprit. Most mild cases resolve within one to three weeks, but some need veterinary treatment, and a few signal something more serious.
Upper Respiratory Infections: The Most Likely Cause
Kittens are especially vulnerable to respiratory infections because their immune systems are still developing. The primary pathogens are feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) and feline calicivirus (FCV), along with several bacteria including Bordetella, Chlamydia, and Mycoplasma. In shelter and multi-cat environments, these spread rapidly through sneezing, shared food bowls, and direct contact.
FHV-1 tends to cause the most pronounced congestion. It damages the delicate structures inside the nasal passages during the acute infection, which can predispose a kitten to chronic stuffiness even after the virus is no longer actively replicating. The initial damage triggers ongoing inflammation and remodeling of the nasal tissue, sometimes complicated by secondary bacterial infections that thicken the discharge and make breathing noisier. Nasal discharge typically starts clear and watery, then turns thick and yellow-green as bacteria move in.
FCV, the other common virus, looks a bit different. Its hallmark is mouth ulcers, usually on the tongue and palate, along with drooling and reluctance to eat. Sneezing and congestion can happen with calicivirus, but they’re generally milder than with herpesvirus. If your kitten has sores in its mouth alongside the congestion, calicivirus is the more likely culprit.
Both viruses often circulate together, and bacterial co-infections are common, so a kitten can have more than one pathogen at once.
Nasopharyngeal Polyps
If your kitten sounds congested but doesn’t have the typical signs of a cold (sneezing, eye discharge, fever), a nasopharyngeal polyp could be the reason. These are benign growths that develop in the middle ear or the back of the throat, and they’re most common in young cats. A polyp partially blocking the airway produces a loud, snoring-like breathing sound called stertor, which can easily be mistaken for nasal congestion.
Other clues that point toward a polyp rather than an infection include difficulty swallowing, poor weight gain, head shaking, and sometimes a head tilt or loss of balance if the growth extends into the inner ear. The nasal discharge with a polyp tends to stay clear and watery unless bacteria colonize around it. Your vet can often spot a polyp by examining the throat under sedation, and removal is the standard treatment.
Environmental Irritants and Asthma
Dust from certain cat litters, cigarette smoke, perfume, air fresheners, scented laundry detergent, essential oil diffusers, and mold can all irritate a kitten’s airways. In some cats, this progresses to feline asthma or chronic bronchitis.
The key distinction: cats with asthma or irritant-triggered congestion rarely have a fever and typically keep eating normally. If your kitten sounds stuffy but is otherwise acting fine, with no sneezing fits, no goopy eyes, and a good appetite, the environment is worth investigating. Try switching to a dust-free, unscented litter, turning off any diffusers, and removing aerosol products from the home to see if the breathing improves.
Signs That Need Urgent Attention
Mild congestion with some sneezing is usually manageable, but certain signs mean your kitten needs a vet right away:
- Open-mouth breathing or panting. Cats are nose breathers. If your kitten is breathing through its mouth, its airway is severely compromised.
- Rapid, shallow breathing with visible effort, where you can see the belly or ribs heaving.
- Extending the head and neck forward in a stretched-out posture, sometimes appearing to gag.
- Blue or pale gums, which indicate inadequate oxygen.
- Complete refusal to eat for more than 24 hours. Kittens have minimal energy reserves and can deteriorate quickly.
Why Congested Kittens Stop Eating
Cats rely heavily on smell to decide whether food is appealing. When a kitten’s nose is blocked, food loses its scent, and the kitten often loses interest entirely. On top of that, if the kitten feels nauseated or is in pain from mouth ulcers, it can develop a learned aversion where it associates the sight or smell of food with feeling bad, making the problem worse even as the infection clears.
A kitten that stops eating is a bigger concern than the congestion itself. Kittens dehydrate quickly and lack the fat stores that adult cats can fall back on. Keeping calories going in is critical during a respiratory infection.
Helping Your Kitten Breathe and Eat at Home
Steam therapy is one of the simplest ways to loosen nasal congestion. Run a hot shower until the bathroom fills with steam, then sit with your kitten in the room (not in the shower) for 10 to 15 minutes. The warm, moist air helps thin the mucus so the kitten can sneeze or snuffle it out. You can do this two to three times a day.
Gently wiping discharge from the nostrils with a warm, damp cloth also helps. Dried mucus crusting over the nose makes it even harder for the kitten to breathe and smell food.
To encourage eating, try warming wet food to just below body temperature. This boosts the aroma, which can cut through partial congestion enough to spark interest. If the kitten still refuses, try the opposite: some cats respond better to chilled food because the reduced smell is less likely to trigger nausea. Other strategies that work:
- Offer small, frequent meals instead of large ones, since sick kittens often quit eating partway through.
- Use wide, shallow dishes so the kitten’s whiskers don’t brush the sides, which some cats find aversive.
- Feed in a quiet spot away from other pets.
- Place a tiny amount of food on the kitten’s lips or paw to prompt licking and get things started.
- Add warm water to dry food or switch to wet food for easier eating.
Vaccination Prevents the Worst of It
The core kitten vaccine (FVRCP) protects against both feline herpesvirus and calicivirus, the two biggest drivers of respiratory infections. The recommended schedule starts at 6 to 8 weeks of age, with boosters every 2 to 4 weeks until at least 16 weeks old. A follow-up dose around 6 months of age is increasingly recommended to close any gap left by fading maternal antibodies.
Vaccination doesn’t guarantee a kitten will never get a respiratory infection, but it dramatically reduces the severity. Vaccinated cats that do catch these viruses tend to have milder symptoms and recover faster. If you adopted a kitten from a shelter, it may have already been exposed before its vaccine series was complete, which is one reason shelter kittens are so prone to sounding congested in their first weeks at home.
When Congestion Becomes Chronic
Some kittens that recover from a bad herpesvirus infection are left with permanent damage to their nasal passages. The virus destroys the thin, scroll-shaped bones inside the nose (turbinates), and the resulting scarring and structural changes create pockets where bacteria thrive. These cats become “chronic snufflers,” with intermittent congestion and nasal discharge that flares up during stress or immune suppression.
Herpesvirus also goes dormant in the body and can reactivate later, much like cold sores in humans. Stress from moving, a new pet in the household, or illness can trigger a flare. If your kitten’s congestion keeps returning despite treatment, this cycle of latency and reactivation is likely at play. Managing stress and keeping up with veterinary care can reduce the frequency and severity of episodes, even if the underlying infection never fully clears.
