Why Does My Newborn Cry in Her Sleep: Causes & Tips

Newborns cry in their sleep mostly because their brains spend an enormous amount of time in active (REM) sleep, a phase filled with twitching, whimpering, and brief outbursts that can sound alarming but are completely normal. About half of a newborn’s total sleep is REM sleep, and during these stretches, babies may jerk their arms or legs, flutter their eyes beneath closed lids, and vocalize without ever truly waking up. In most cases, no intervention is needed.

Active Sleep Looks Louder Than You’d Expect

A newborn’s sleep cycle is only about 45 to 60 minutes long, roughly half the length of an adult’s. Within each cycle, your baby shifts between quiet, deep sleep and active REM sleep. During the active phase, the brain is busy processing new sensory information, and the body responds with shallow breathing, twitches, grunts, and yes, crying. These sounds can range from soft whimpers to sharp, sudden wails that last only a few seconds.

Because newborns cycle through sleep so quickly, they hit these noisy transitions many times per night. Between cycles, babies often enter a brief partial arousal where they may sit (or squirm) in a half-awake, half-asleep state, cry for anywhere from two to ten minutes, and then drift back into deeper sleep on their own. The child stays asleep throughout the episode, even though they look and sound distressed. These partial arousals, sometimes called confusional arousals, are a normal part of immature sleep architecture and become less frequent as the brain matures.

The Startle Reflex

Newborns are born with a startle reflex (called the Moro reflex) that fires when their vestibular system, the inner-ear balance mechanism, detects a sensation of falling. A slight head drop, a sudden noise, or even a shift in position while being laid down can trigger it. The response is dramatic: arms fling outward, fingers fan open, the head tips back, and the baby cries. This reflex begins to fade around 12 weeks and is typically gone by 6 months. Until then, it’s one of the most common reasons a sleeping newborn suddenly cries out.

Swaddling helps counteract the startle reflex by keeping your baby’s arms snug against their body, which reduces the flailing sensation that triggers the cry. Many parents notice a significant drop in sleep-crying once they start swaddling consistently.

Hunger Cues That Start Before Waking

Babies often begin signaling hunger while still partially asleep. You might notice sucking noises, lip-smacking, or your baby turning their head toward your chest or toward anything touching their cheek. These early cues can escalate into crying if your baby fully rouses before being fed. Newborns wake after one to two sleep cycles when they’re hungry, so a cry that comes roughly 45 minutes to two hours after a feeding and is followed by rooting is usually straightforward hunger.

Discomfort and Reflux

Physical discomfort can also cause sleep-crying. If the room is too warm, your baby may get flushed, sweaty, or restless. A good rule of thumb is to dress your baby in no more than one layer beyond what you’d wear comfortably in the same room. Check by feeling your baby’s chest: if it’s hot to the touch or damp, they’re likely overheating.

Gastroesophageal reflux is another culprit. Stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus causes irritability, especially after feeding. Babies with reflux tend to cry or grimace during or shortly after meals and may arch their backs. When reflux is mild, it usually resolves on its own as the digestive system matures. But if it’s affecting your baby’s ability to sleep or gain weight, it may warrant a conversation with your pediatrician.

How to Respond Without Waking Your Baby

The most important thing to know: pausing before you pick your baby up can make a real difference. Many sleep-cries resolve within seconds or minutes if left alone. Rushing in and lifting a baby who’s still asleep can actually trigger a full wake-up (and potentially the startle reflex), making things harder for both of you.

If the crying continues or escalates, try these low-stimulation approaches before picking your baby up:

  • Gentle touch. Place a warm hand on your baby’s chest or belly. Light, steady pressure can be calming without causing a full arousal.
  • White noise. A steady sound, like a fan or an ocean-wave recording, mimics the constant noise of the womb and helps some babies settle back into deeper sleep.
  • Pacifier. Sucking is deeply soothing for newborns. If your baby isn’t hungry, a pacifier can help them transition through a rough sleep cycle.
  • Swaddling. Wrapping your baby snugly in a thin blanket before sleep reduces startle-reflex awakenings and keeps them feeling secure.

If your baby does wake fully, holding them against your shoulder or chest with gentle rubbing or patting on the back is one of the most effective calming techniques. Slow rocking or a brief walk in a carrier can also help.

Signs That Something Else Is Going On

Normal sleep-crying is brief, intermittent, and your baby looks otherwise healthy. A few signs suggest the crying may need medical attention:

  • A different-sounding cry. High-pitched shrieking or a cry that sounds distinctly unlike your baby’s usual fussing.
  • Fever above 100.4°F (38°C) or a body temperature below 96.8°F (36°C).
  • Breathing changes. More than 60 breaths per minute, grunting or moaning with each breath, or visible rib retraction (the skin between the ribs pulling in with each inhale).
  • Color changes. Pale, bluish, or gray skin on the arms, legs, or around the lips, especially if paired with feeding or breathing difficulty.
  • Feeding problems. Weak sucking, sweating during feeds, or noticeably fewer wet diapers than usual.
  • Excessive sleepiness. Needing to be woken for feeds or being unusually floppy or limp.

Any of these alongside persistent crying warrants a call to your pediatrician. Green (bile-colored) vomit or persistent blue skin with breathing trouble is an emergency.

When Sleep-Crying Starts to Fade

Most sleep-crying decreases noticeably between three and four months. By then, the startle reflex has largely disappeared, sleep cycles begin to lengthen, and the proportion of REM sleep gradually shifts to match a more adult-like pattern. Some babies are noisier sleepers than others well into the first year, but the sharp, startling cries that send parents running typically become less frequent as the nervous system matures. In the meantime, those middle-of-the-night whimpers are almost always just the sound of a developing brain doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.
