Why Does My Nose Get Clogged? Causes Explained

Your nose gets clogged primarily because the tissue lining your nasal passages swells with blood, not because it’s packed with mucus. The nasal turbinates, bony structures inside your nose covered in soft tissue rich with blood vessels, regulate airflow by expanding and shrinking. When those blood vessels dilate, the tissue balloons inward, narrowing the space air moves through. Mucus buildup can make things worse, but swollen tissue is the main reason you feel blocked.

What’s Actually Happening Inside Your Nose

Your turbinates do important work: they warm, humidify, and filter the air you breathe. To do this, they’re packed with blood vessels that can rapidly fill or drain. When something triggers those vessels to expand, the turbinate tissue swells and partially or fully blocks the nasal passage. This is why blowing your nose often doesn’t help much. The obstruction isn’t something you can clear out. It’s the wall of the passage itself getting thicker.

This swelling can happen on its own as part of a normal process called the nasal cycle. Every four to six hours, one side of your nose becomes more congested while the other side opens up. You usually don’t notice it unless something else, like a cold or allergies, amplifies the swelling enough to make both sides feel blocked. If you’ve ever wondered why only one nostril seems stuffed at a time, especially at night, this is almost always the reason.

Allergies: The Most Common Trigger

When you inhale something you’re allergic to, like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, your immune system overreacts. Specialized cells in the nasal lining release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals almost immediately. Histamine causes two things at once: it makes blood vessels in the nasal lining dilate (which swells the tissue) and it makes those vessels more permeable, so fluid leaks into the surrounding tissue. The result is rapid, dramatic engorgement of the nasal passages.

That’s just the first wave. Within hours, a second phase kicks in as other inflammatory signals recruit more immune cells to the area. This later response is why allergy-related congestion can linger well after you’ve left the room with the cat or come inside from high pollen counts. Allergic congestion tends to produce clear, watery discharge and often comes with sneezing, itchy eyes, or an itchy throat.

Colds, Sinus Infections, and Other Infections

Viral infections like the common cold trigger the same swelling mechanism but through a different pathway. The virus damages cells in the nasal lining, setting off an inflammatory response that dilates blood vessels and ramps up mucus production. A cold typically starts with clear, runny discharge that thickens over several days.

If congestion lasts more than ten days, or if it improves and then suddenly worsens, a bacterial sinus infection may have developed on top of the initial viral cold. Sinus infections tend to produce thick, discolored (yellow or green) nasal discharge, facial pain or pressure, headaches, fatigue, reduced sense of smell, and sometimes fever or bad breath. The congestion feels deeper and heavier, often centered around the cheeks, forehead, or between the eyes.

Dry Air and Environmental Irritants

Low humidity dries out the nasal lining, which triggers a compensatory response: your body increases blood flow to the area to protect the tissue, leading to swelling. Dry air also thickens mucus, making it harder to drain. Indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent is the range most people find comfortable and most protective for nasal health. Below 30 percent, you’re more likely to experience congestion, and dried-out nasal passages may actually make it easier to catch respiratory viruses like the flu.

Cigarette smoke, strong perfumes, cleaning chemicals, and air pollution can all irritate the nasal lining enough to cause swelling even in people without allergies. Cold air is another common trigger. If you notice your nose clogs up within minutes of stepping outside in winter or walking into a heavily scented store, irritant exposure is the likely cause.

Rebound Congestion From Nasal Sprays

Over-the-counter decongestant sprays work by constricting blood vessels in the turbinates, shrinking the tissue and opening the airway almost instantly. The problem is that using them for more than three consecutive days can cause rebound congestion, a condition called rhinitis medicamentosa. The nasal tissue becomes dependent on the spray, and when it wears off, swelling comes back worse than before. This creates a cycle where you need more spray to breathe, which makes the rebound worse each time.

If you’ve been using a decongestant spray daily for weeks or months, stopping abruptly will feel miserable, but the rebound congestion typically resolves within a week or two. A saline spray can help during the transition. Oral decongestants don’t carry the same rebound risk, though they have other limitations and aren’t meant for long-term use either.

Structural Problems

Sometimes the issue isn’t swelling at all but the physical shape of your nasal passages. A deviated septum, where the wall between your two nostrils is shifted significantly to one side, can narrow one passage enough to cause chronic stuffiness. Most people have some degree of septal deviation, but it only causes problems when the shift is severe enough to noticeably restrict airflow on one side. This type of congestion is constant rather than coming and going, and it doesn’t respond to allergy medications or decongestants.

Nasal polyps are another structural cause. These are soft, painless, noncancerous growths that form in the lining of the nose or sinuses, ranging in size from small teardrops to large grapes. Small polyps may cause no symptoms at all. Larger ones can block the nasal passages and lead to persistent congestion, reduced sense of smell and taste, headaches, snoring, and postnasal drip. Polyps are more common in people with asthma, chronic sinus infections, or aspirin sensitivity.

Congestion That Gets Worse Lying Down

Gravity plays a significant role in how congested you feel. When you’re upright, blood drains away from the nasal tissue more easily, keeping swelling in check. When you lie down, blood pools in the turbinates, and the side you’re lying on tends to congest more. This is why nighttime congestion feels so much worse than daytime congestion, even when nothing else has changed. Elevating your head slightly with an extra pillow can reduce this effect.

Acid reflux can also worsen nighttime congestion. Stomach acid that creeps up to the back of the throat irritates the nasal and sinus tissue from behind, causing swelling that feels identical to allergic or viral congestion. If you wake up stuffy every morning and allergy treatments aren’t helping, reflux is worth considering.

How to Tell What’s Causing Yours

The pattern of your congestion is the biggest clue. Congestion that follows a seasonal pattern, happens around animals, or comes with itchy eyes and sneezing points to allergies. Congestion that arrived with a sore throat, body aches, or fever and has lasted less than ten days is almost certainly a viral infection. Congestion that never goes away, affects the same side consistently, and doesn’t respond to medications suggests a structural issue like a deviated septum or polyps.

Congestion that started after you began using nasal spray daily is likely rebound. Congestion that only shows up in winter, in air-conditioned rooms, or in specific environments points to dry air or irritant exposure. And congestion that alternates between nostrils throughout the day with no other symptoms is just your normal nasal cycle doing its job.
