The brain regions most affected are the ones responsible for memory and executive function. Your Nervous System Gets Stuck in High Gear

Stress tips the balance heavily toward sympathetic dominance, keeping your body in a state of heightened arousal even when you’re sitting on the couch.
Research using heart rate variability, a measure of the timing between heartbeats, has shown that as people become fatigued, their sympathetic nervous system activity increases rather than decreases. In other words, fatigue from stress isn’t the same as the pleasant tiredness you feel after exercise. It’s an agitated exhaustion where your body is simultaneously revved up and running out of fuel. Personality traits like emotional stability and tension levels influence how strongly this shift occurs, which partly explains why the same stressor can leave one person merely annoyed and another completely drained.
This sympathetic overdrive also explains the specific quality of stress-related fatigue. You might feel too tired to function but too wound up to sleep. Your muscles ache from sustained tension. Your heart rate sits a little higher than normal. These aren’t signs that something is wrong with you. They’re signs that your nervous system is doing exactly what it’s designed to do in response to threat, just for far longer than it was designed to do it.
Stress Depletes Magnesium and Other Key Nutrients
Stress hormones cause a measurable increase in magnesium levels outside your cells, which triggers your kidneys to flush the excess out.
