If you sneeze every time you step into bright sunlight, you have a real, inherited trait called the photic sneeze reflex. It affects an estimated 15 to 35 percent of the population, and it’s been puzzling people for a long time. Aristotle himself wondered about it in ancient Greece.
What Causes the Reflex
The sneeze happens because of a case of crossed signals in your nervous system. A large nerve called the trigeminal nerve carries sensory information from both your eyes and your nose to your brain. When bright light suddenly floods your eyes, it strongly stimulates the eye-related branch of this nerve. Because the nerve branches serving your eyes and nose are so closely bundled together, the intense signal from your eyes spills over into the branch connected to your nose. Your brain interprets that spillover as irritation inside your nasal passages, and it fires off a sneeze.
This is why the trigger is almost always a sudden change in brightness, not just being in a bright environment. Walking out of a dark building into midday sun, emerging from a highway tunnel, or glancing toward a bright sky on a clear day are classic triggers. If you’ve been in sunlight for a few minutes, the reflex typically doesn’t keep firing because your eyes have already adjusted.
Why Only Some People Have It
The photic sneeze reflex runs in families, and it follows one of the simplest inheritance patterns in genetics. It’s autosomal dominant, meaning you only need one copy of the gene variant (from one parent) to have the trait. If one of your parents is a sun sneezer, you have roughly a 50 percent chance of being one too. Studies in both Swedish and English populations found the trait in about 24 to 25 percent of people, consistent with this inheritance pattern.
The trait even has a formal (and deliberately playful) medical name: ACHOO syndrome, short for Autosomal dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst. Researchers have not yet pinpointed the exact gene responsible, but the inheritance pattern is well established across multiple population studies.
Real Safety Concerns
Sun sneezing seems harmless, and for most daily situations it is. But in certain contexts it creates genuine hazards. Driving out of a long tunnel into bright daylight is a well-documented danger zone. The sudden light shift can trigger a sneeze along with a brief moment of involuntary eye closure, exactly when you need to be most alert. Research published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology found that exiting a tunnel can triple the risk of sneezing for people with the reflex.
The risk extends to more specialized situations too. Military researchers have flagged the reflex as a concern for combat pilots, who may be suddenly exposed to intense sunlight during sharp course changes. It’s also been noted as a potential issue for baseball outfielders tracking fly balls against a bright sky and, more colorfully, high-wire acrobats. In any scenario where a split second of lost focus matters, the reflex is more than a quirk.
How to Reduce Sun Sneezing
There’s no cure for the photic sneeze reflex, but a few practical strategies can blunt it. The most effective approach is reducing the contrast between dark and bright environments so the light change isn’t as dramatic. Dark sunglasses and a brimmed hat are the simplest tools. Put your sunglasses on before you step outside, not after, so your eyes never experience that sharp jump in brightness.
If you feel a sneeze building, try pressing firmly on the skin between your nose and upper lip (the little groove called the philtrum). This pressure technique can interrupt the nerve signal before it completes the sneeze reflex. It won’t work every time, but many people find it reliable enough to use in a pinch.
If you also deal with seasonal allergies or chronic nasal congestion, treating those conditions can lower your overall sneeze threshold. When your nasal passages are already irritated from allergies, the crossed nerve signal from bright light has an easier time pushing you over the edge into a full sneeze. Managing the allergies essentially raises the bar, making the light-triggered sneeze less likely to fire.
