Sometimes it’s hormonal, sometimes it’s psychological, and often it’s a combination of several factors layering on top of each other. The good news is that most of these causes are treatable or manageable once you know what’s driving the change.

Sexual desire isn’t just about hormones or attraction. It starts in the brain, where two competing systems constantly push and pull against each other. One system accelerates desire, driven largely by dopamine, the same chemical involved in motivation and reward. The other system acts as a brake, using serotonin to suppress arousal. When these systems are in balance, desire feels natural. When something tips the scale toward the braking side, desire fades, sometimes dramatically.

Thyroid Disorders Often Go Unrecognized
Your thyroid gland controls your body’s overall metabolic pace, and when it’s underperforming, nearly every system slows down, including your sex drive. A meta-analysis covering over 1,000 women found that nearly 42% of women with hypothyroidism experienced sexual dysfunction. Women with an overactive thyroid fared even worse, at close to 60%. Thyroid problems are common and often go undiagnosed for years because the symptoms (fatigue, weight changes, mood shifts) overlap with so many other conditions. A simple blood test can identify them.
Psychological and Relationship Factors
Depression and anxiety suppress desire through both biological and psychological pathways. Depression reduces dopamine activity, weakening the brain’s “accelerator” for desire. Anxiety keeps cortisol elevated, strengthening the brake. Together, they create a powerful suppression of libido that can feel like the desire has simply vanished.
