Sleeping more than usual typically signals that your body needs extra recovery time, but it can also point to an underlying medical condition, a medication side effect, or a shift in your internal clock. Healthy adults need seven to nine hours of sleep per night. If you’re consistently sleeping well beyond that range and still feeling tired, something specific is usually driving it.

The reasons fall into a few broad categories: your body fighting something off, a sleep disorder that wrecks the quality of your rest, hormonal or mood changes, medications, or a misaligned body clock. Understanding which category fits your situation helps you figure out whether this is temporary or worth investigating further.

Your Body May Be Fighting Something

When your immune system activates to fight an infection, it releases signaling molecules that directly act on the parts of your brain controlling sleep. These molecules shift the balance between wake-promoting and sleep-promoting brain cells, pushing you into deeper, longer periods of non-dreaming sleep. This is why a cold, the flu, or any viral illness makes you want to sleep for 12 or more hours. It’s not laziness. Your immune system is literally hijacking your sleep controls to give itself more resources.

This effect doesn’t always end when the obvious symptoms clear up. After a significant infection, fatigue and oversleeping can linger for weeks or even months. Post-viral fatigue is common after flu, mononucleosis, COVID-19, and other infections. If your increased sleep started around or after an illness, your body may still be in recovery mode even if you feel otherwise healthy.

Sleep Quality vs. Sleep Quantity

One of the most common reasons people sleep excessively is that the sleep they’re getting is fragmented, so their body tries to compensate with more hours in bed. Obstructive sleep apnea is a prime example. During sleep, the soft tissues in your throat relax and partially or completely block your airway. Your oxygen levels drop, your brain jolts you awake just long enough to start breathing again, and then the cycle repeats. In severe cases, this can happen hundreds of times per night.

These awakenings are often so brief (sometimes just a few seconds) that you have no memory of them. You think you slept eight or nine hours, but your brain never completed the deep sleep cycles it needed. The result is significant daytime fatigue and sleepiness, which often leads to sleeping longer on weekends, napping frequently, or simply spending more and more time in bed trying to feel rested. If you snore, wake up with a dry mouth, or feel exhausted despite a full night of sleep, fragmented breathing during sleep is worth considering.

Depression, Stress, and Emotional Exhaustion

Oversleeping is one of the hallmark symptoms of depression, particularly the subtype called atypical depression. Where some forms of depression cause insomnia, atypical depression does the opposite: it increases sleep duration, sometimes dramatically. You may sleep 10 to 14 hours and still feel heavy and drained. The fatigue feels physical, not just emotional, which is why many people don’t immediately connect it to their mood.

Chronic stress and burnout produce a similar pattern. Prolonged emotional strain taxes the same neurological systems that regulate sleep. Over time, your body starts demanding more rest as a form of damage control. If your oversleeping coincides with feeling unmotivated, withdrawing from activities you used to enjoy, or a persistent sense of heaviness in your limbs, the sleep issue and the emotional issue are likely connected.

Thyroid and Hormonal Changes

Your thyroid gland sets the metabolic pace for your entire body. When it underproduces hormones (hypothyroidism), everything slows down, including your energy levels. People with lower thyroid hormone levels tend to have lower satisfaction with their sleep quality and may sleep longer while feeling less rested. Hypothyroidism is especially common in women over 40, though it can affect anyone.

Other hormonal shifts that increase sleep include pregnancy (particularly the first trimester, when progesterone surges), perimenopause, and changes in testosterone levels. If oversleeping came on gradually alongside other symptoms like weight gain, feeling cold all the time, constipation, or thinning hair, a simple blood test can check your thyroid function.

Medications That Cause Sleepiness

A surprisingly long list of common medications can increase how much you sleep. If your oversleeping started around the time you began a new prescription or changed a dose, the medication itself could be the cause. The most common culprits include:

  • Allergy medications, especially older-generation antihistamines like diphenhydramine (the active ingredient in many over-the-counter sleep aids and allergy pills)
  • Antidepressants, particularly trazodone, mirtazapine, and some older tricyclic types
  • Nerve pain and seizure medications like gabapentin and pregabalin
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Opioid pain medications
  • Blood pressure medications, especially certain beta blockers
  • Antipsychotic medications
  • Over-the-counter supplements like valerian root, melatonin, and kava

If you suspect a medication, don’t stop it on your own. But it’s worth flagging with whoever prescribed it, because alternatives with less sedation often exist.

A Shifted Body Clock

Sometimes the issue isn’t how much you sleep but when. Delayed sleep phase syndrome shifts your internal clock so that your natural sleep window is at least two hours later than a typical schedule. Your body doesn’t release the sleep hormone melatonin on a normal timeline. You can’t fall asleep until 2, 3, or 4 a.m., which means you can’t wake up at a normal hour without significant sleep deprivation.

The result looks like oversleeping. You sleep until noon on days you can, and you drag through the day exhausted when you can’t. But the total amount of sleep you need is normal. The timing is just misaligned. This condition has a genetic component that makes the body’s natural circadian rhythm longer than average. If you’ve always been a “night owl” who struggles with early mornings no matter how hard you try, this is different from a willpower problem.

Hypersomnia as a Standalone Condition

In some cases, excessive sleepiness exists on its own, without an identifiable cause like depression, sleep apnea, or medication. This is called idiopathic hypersomnia. People with this condition sleep a normal or even excessive amount at night and still feel overwhelmingly drowsy during the day. Naps don’t refresh them. Waking up feels like clawing out of a fog, a sensation sometimes called “sleep drunkenness.”

Hypersomnia is less common than the other causes on this list, but it’s worth knowing about if you’ve ruled out the more typical explanations and the problem persists.

How to Tell If Your Sleepiness Is Abnormal

Doctors use a tool called the Epworth Sleepiness Scale to measure daytime sleepiness. It asks you to rate how likely you are to doze off in eight everyday situations, like sitting and reading, watching TV, or sitting in traffic. Your answers produce a score from 0 to 24. A score of 11 or higher indicates excessive daytime sleepiness that warrants further investigation. Scores between 13 and 15 are considered moderate, and anything above 16 is severe.

You can take this self-assessment online in about two minutes. It won’t diagnose anything, but it gives you a concrete number to bring to a healthcare provider. If your score is above 11, additional testing (often a sleep study or blood work) can help identify what’s behind it.

Practical Steps That Help

While figuring out the root cause, a few changes can clarify whether your oversleeping is situational or something deeper. Keep a sleep diary for two weeks: note when you go to bed, when you wake up, how rested you feel on a scale of 1 to 10, and any naps. This record reveals patterns you might not notice otherwise, like sleeping 11 hours on workdays but feeling fine on vacation, or feeling worst on days after alcohol use.

Anchor your wake time. Even if you can’t control when you fall asleep, getting up at the same time every day (including weekends) is the single most effective way to stabilize your sleep drive. Exposure to bright light within 30 minutes of waking also helps reset your circadian clock. Cut caffeine after noon, and avoid naps longer than 20 minutes, which can deepen the cycle of nighttime sleep disruption followed by daytime fatigue.

If two to three weeks of consistent sleep habits don’t improve things, the oversleeping likely has a medical or psychological cause that lifestyle changes alone won’t fix. At that point, blood work checking thyroid function and iron levels, along with a sleep study to rule out apnea, covers the most common treatable causes.
