When you’re under stress, your body releases cortisol to help you respond to the threat. The key patterns that suggest something beyond a rough week: irritability lasting more than two weeks, irritability that’s damaging your relationships or work performance, irritability paired with sleep changes or loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or a level of anger that feels genuinely unfamiliar to you.
