Why Have I Been Sweating in My Sleep at Night?

Sweating in your sleep usually comes down to one of two things: your sleeping environment is too warm, or something internal is triggering your body’s cooling system when it shouldn’t. The distinction matters. Waking up damp because your comforter is too heavy is different from repeatedly soaking through your sheets, which is what doctors consider true night sweats. Both are common, but they point to different causes and different solutions.

Night Sweats vs. Sleeping Hot

Not all nighttime sweating qualifies as night sweats in the medical sense. If you’re piling on blankets, wearing heavy pajamas, or keeping your bedroom above 70°F, your body is simply doing its job by releasing heat. That kind of sweating stops when you fix the environment.

True night sweats are repeated episodes of heavy sweating that soak your nightclothes or bedding, regardless of how cool the room is. They’re often driven by an underlying condition, a medication, or a hormonal shift. If you’re waking up drenched and your room isn’t warm, that’s the version worth investigating.

Your Bedroom May Be Too Warm

The simplest explanation is often the right one. Sleep specialists recommend keeping your bedroom between 60 and 67°F (15 to 19°C) for optimal sleep. Your core body temperature naturally drops at night to help initiate and maintain sleep, and a warm room fights that process. Memory foam mattresses, synthetic comforters, and flannel sheets can all trap heat close to your body and push you past the sweating threshold without the room itself feeling especially hot.

Hormonal Changes and Your Internal Thermostat

Your brain has a built-in thermostat, a small region that monitors your internal temperature and decides when to trigger sweating or shivering. Under normal conditions, this thermostat has a comfortable range of about 0.4°C. Small fluctuations in temperature stay within that range and don’t provoke a response.

During perimenopause and menopause, falling estrogen levels narrow that range significantly. The thermostat becomes hypersensitive, so even a tiny shift in body or room temperature can cross the threshold and trigger a full heat-dissipation response: flushing, sweating, and a racing heart. This is the mechanism behind hot flashes and their nighttime counterpart, night sweats. Up to 80% of women going through menopause experience them.

Estrogen isn’t the only hormone involved. Low testosterone in men can cause similar nighttime sweating, as can thyroid disorders that speed up your metabolism and raise your baseline body temperature. Conditions that affect blood sugar, like diabetes, can also trigger sweating episodes during sleep when glucose levels drop overnight.

Medications That Cause Night Sweats

If your sweating started around the same time you began a new medication, that’s a strong clue. Antidepressants are among the most common culprits. In one primary care study, patients taking SSRIs (a widely prescribed class of antidepressants) were about three times more likely to report night sweats than patients not taking them. Roughly 22% of SSRI users in that study experienced the symptom.

Other medications linked to nighttime sweating include fever reducers like aspirin and acetaminophen (which can paradoxically trigger rebound sweating), blood pressure medications, hormone therapy drugs, and some diabetes medications. Steroids, both prescription corticosteroids and hormonal supplements, are also frequent offenders.

Sleep Apnea and Nighttime Sweating

This connection surprises most people. Obstructive sleep apnea, a condition where your airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, causes night sweats in about 31% of people who have it. That’s nearly three times the rate found in the general population. The likely explanation is that each time your airway closes, your body mounts a stress response to force you to breathe again. That repeated activation of your fight-or-flight system raises your heart rate and triggers sweating.

If your nighttime sweating comes with loud snoring, gasping awake, morning headaches, or daytime exhaustion, sleep apnea is worth considering. Treating it often resolves the sweating along with the other symptoms.

Infections and Immune System Responses

Your immune system uses heat as a weapon against pathogens, and sweating is how it releases that heat. Any infection that causes fever can produce night sweats, but certain infections are particularly associated with drenching episodes. Tuberculosis is one of the classic examples, with night sweats listed as a hallmark symptom alongside a persistent cough, weight loss, and fatigue. Bacterial infections of the heart valves (endocarditis), bone infections, and abscesses can all cause sweating that’s worst at night.

HIV, certain fungal infections, and mononucleosis can also produce prolonged night sweats. In most of these cases, you’ll have other symptoms too: fever during the day, fatigue, or pain in a specific area.

Less Common but Serious Causes

Night sweats can occasionally be an early sign of lymphoma or leukemia. In these cases, the sweating tends to be severe, persistent, and accompanied by other warning signs. Clinicians look for a specific pattern: unintentional weight loss greater than 5% of your body weight over six to twelve months, swollen lymph nodes that persist longer than four to six weeks, unexplained fevers, easy bruising or bleeding, and ongoing fatigue. Any combination of these with night sweats warrants prompt evaluation.

Anxiety disorders and chronic stress can also drive nighttime sweating by keeping your nervous system in a heightened state even during sleep. Alcohol and caffeine close to bedtime raise your metabolic rate and can provoke sweating as your body processes them overnight.

Practical Ways to Reduce Sleep Sweating

Start with the basics. Set your thermostat between 60 and 67°F. If you can’t control your home’s temperature, a fan pointed at your bed or a cooling mattress pad can help. Swap out heavy bedding for lighter layers you can kick off easily.

What you wear matters too. Moisture-wicking sleepwear made from synthetic fibers like polyester microfiber pulls sweat away from your skin and lets it evaporate faster. These fabrics are hydrophobic, meaning they resist absorbing water, and instead channel it through gaps in the weave. Bamboo and cotton blends can also work because their hollow fibers promote capillary action, though they tend to saturate faster than synthetics. Many effective options combine natural and synthetic fibers to balance comfort with performance. There’s no standardized rating system for wicking ability, so focus on lightweight, breathable fabrics with a loose fit.

Avoid alcohol, spicy food, and heavy meals within two to three hours of bedtime. All three raise your core temperature and make sweating more likely. If you exercise in the evening, give your body at least two hours to cool down before sleep.

If your night sweats are persistent, soaking, and not explained by your environment or lifestyle, keep a log of when they happen, how severe they are, and any other symptoms you notice. That record makes it much easier for a doctor to narrow down the cause, whether it’s a medication adjustment, a hormone panel, a sleep study, or further testing.
