Why High Voltage Is More Efficient for Power Transmission

High voltage is more efficient for transmitting electricity because it allows the same amount of power to be delivered with far less current, and it’s the current flowing through wires that generates heat loss. Double the voltage and you halve the current, which cuts heat loss to one quarter of what it was. This single principle is why power lines carry electricity at hundreds of thousands of volts instead of the 120 or 240 volts you use at home.

The Formula Behind the Efficiency

Electrical power equals voltage multiplied by current (P = V × I). If a power plant needs to deliver 1,000 watts to a city, it can do that at 100 volts and 10 amps, or at 1,000 volts and just 1 amp. Either way, the same total power arrives. The difference is what happens along the way.

Every wire has resistance, and whenever current flows through a resistant material, some electrical energy converts to heat. The power lost as heat follows the formula P = I² × R, where I is the current and R is the resistance of the wire. That squared term is critical. It means that if you cut the current in half, you don’t just halve the losses; you reduce them to one quarter. Cut the current to one tenth, and losses drop to one hundredth.

So by raising the voltage, you shrink the current for the same power delivery, and the heat wasted in the wires drops dramatically. This is why engineers push transmission voltages as high as practically possible.

A Simple Example

Imagine you need to transmit 1 megawatt (1,000,000 watts) over a power line that has 10 ohms of resistance.

At 10,000 volts, the current would be 100 amps. Heat loss in the wire: 100² × 10 = 100,000 watts. That’s 10% of your power wasted as heat before it even reaches the destination.

Now raise the voltage to 100,000 volts. The current drops to 10 amps. Heat loss: 10² × 10 = 1,000 watts, or just 0.1% of the total. Same wire, same power delivered, but one hundred times less energy wasted. The only thing that changed was the voltage.

How the Grid Uses This Principle

Real power grids are designed around this physics. A generating station produces electricity at relatively modest voltages, then a “step-up” transformer at the plant boosts it for long-distance travel. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, typical transmission voltages include 115 kV, 230 kV, 345 kV, 500 kV, and 765 kV. The longest routes and heaviest loads use the highest voltages because the distances involved would otherwise produce enormous losses.

As electricity gets closer to where people actually use it, substations progressively step the voltage back down. Sub-transmission networks carry power at 34 to 69 kV over shorter distances. Distribution systems, rated below 34 kV, feed neighborhoods and commercial areas. A final transformer on a utility pole or in a ground-level box near your home reduces the voltage to the 120 or 240 volts your appliances expect.

Each step-down increases the current and therefore increases losses per mile, but by that point the electricity only has to travel a short distance. The long, lossy stretches happen at the highest voltages where losses per mile are minimal.

How Much Energy the Grid Actually Loses

Even with high-voltage transmission, some energy is inevitably lost. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that transmission and distribution losses averaged about 5% of all electricity delivered in the United States from 2018 through 2022. That 5% figure covers everything from the high-voltage backbone to the low-voltage lines running to your house. The vast majority of that loss occurs in the lower-voltage distribution network, not on the long-distance high-voltage lines, precisely because distribution operates at lower voltages with higher currents.

Without high-voltage transmission, that 5% figure would be catastrophically higher. If the entire grid ran at distribution-level voltages, losses on long routes could easily exceed 50%, making the system economically and physically unworkable.

Why Not Just Go Higher?

If higher voltage means less loss, you might wonder why we don’t transmit at a million volts or more. There are real physical limits.

At very high voltages, the electric field around the wire becomes strong enough to ionize the surrounding air. This creates a phenomenon called corona discharge: a faint glow and crackling sound around the wire that bleeds energy into the atmosphere. Corona losses increase with voltage, especially in humid or rainy conditions, and they partially offset the gains from reduced current. Engineers manage this by using thicker conductors and bundled cables (multiple wires spaced apart acting as a single conductor) to spread the electric field over a larger area, but these solutions add cost and weight.

Insulation is another constraint. Higher voltages require larger, heavier insulators to prevent electricity from arcing to the tower or the ground. The towers themselves need to be taller, with longer crossarms to keep adequate clearance between wires and between wires and the earth. All of this drives up construction and maintenance costs. At some point, the incremental savings in transmission loss no longer justify the additional infrastructure expense.

Safety is a factor too. Working on or near ultra-high-voltage equipment is inherently more dangerous, and the right-of-way corridors needed for the tallest towers can be difficult to secure, especially through populated areas.

Why Transformers Make It All Possible

None of this would work without transformers, devices that convert electricity from one voltage to another with very little energy loss (typically 1% or less). Transformers work by passing alternating current through coils of wire wrapped around an iron core. Changing the ratio of wire loops between the input and output coils changes the voltage proportionally.

This is one of the key reasons alternating current (AC) won out over direct current (DC) in the early days of electrification. AC voltage can be stepped up and down cheaply and efficiently with simple transformers. DC required expensive, lossy conversion equipment for most of electrical history, though modern high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology has made DC practical for certain ultra-long-distance routes and undersea cables where it offers its own set of advantages.

The core insight remains the same regardless of AC or DC: for any given amount of power, pushing it at higher voltage means less current, less heat lost in the wires, and more of the energy you generated actually reaching the people who need it.
