Why Is My 4-Month-Old Not Sleeping Well Anymore

Your 4-month-old probably isn’t sleeping because their brain is fundamentally reorganizing the way it handles sleep. Around this age, babies shift from the deep, heavy sleep patterns of a newborn into a more adult-like cycle with distinct stages of light and deep sleep. This transition, commonly called the 4-month sleep regression, is one of the most disruptive stretches of infancy, but it’s a sign of healthy neurological development, not a problem to fix.

What’s Happening in Your Baby’s Brain

Newborns spend most of their time in deep sleep. That’s why brand-new babies can sleep through noise, movement, and light so easily. Around four months, the brain matures enough to start cycling between phases of light and deep sleep, the same way older children and adults do. The difference is that your baby hasn’t yet learned how to smoothly transition between those phases. Every time they enter a lighter stage of sleep, they’re more likely to wake up fully and need help getting back down.

This isn’t a temporary blip that resets back to the old pattern. The shift to cycling sleep stages is permanent. What does go away is the frequency of the wake-ups, once your baby gradually learns to move through light sleep without fully waking. That adjustment period typically lasts two to six weeks, though some babies take longer.

Their Internal Clock Is Still Under Construction

A baby’s pineal gland doesn’t begin producing melatonin until after birth, and levels are essentially undetectable until around six weeks of age. Even at four months, the circadian rhythm is still immature. Melatonin doesn’t become a stable part of a baby’s sleep-wake cycle until roughly six months. So your 4-month-old is navigating new sleep architecture without the internal clock signals that help adults feel drowsy at predictable times. That’s a recipe for erratic sleep.

One thing worth knowing: melatonin follows the body clock rather than driving it. Exposure to natural daylight during the day and dim lighting in the evening helps train that internal clock. You won’t speed up the process dramatically, but you can support it by keeping mornings bright and the hour before bedtime calm and low-lit.

Growth Spurts and Hunger

Four months is a common time for a growth spurt, and growing babies eat more. You may notice your baby wanting to feed every 30 minutes to an hour, especially in the evenings. This cluster feeding can look alarming, but it’s normal and often serves a dual purpose: fueling growth and building milk supply for breastfed babies. Some babies use those evening cluster feeds to tank up before a longer stretch of nighttime sleep, so the extra feeding sessions can actually work in your favor.

If your baby was previously sleeping a longer stretch at night and is now waking to eat again, genuine hunger from a growth spurt is a likely culprit. These phases usually pass within a few days, though they can overlap with the sleep regression and make the whole picture messier.

How Much Sleep a 4-Month-Old Needs

Most babies this age need 12 to 16 hours of total sleep per day. That breaks down to a longer stretch at night (often still interrupted) plus about 3 to 4 hours of daytime naps spread across at least two naps. Some babies take three or four shorter naps instead of two longer ones, and that’s fine at this age.

Wake windows, the stretches of time your baby can handle being awake, run about 1.5 to 2.5 hours at four months. Babies with higher sleep needs tend to do better on the shorter end, while lower-sleep-need babies tolerate closer to 2.5 hours. Wake windows also tend to be shortest in the morning and longest before bedtime. If your baby is awake for much longer than 2.5 hours, they may become overtired, which paradoxically makes it harder for them to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Signs Your Baby Is Overtired

Overtiredness is one of the most common and fixable causes of poor sleep at this age. An overtired baby produces stress hormones that make it harder to settle down, creating a frustrating cycle: the more tired they are, the worse they sleep. Watch for eye rubbing, yawning, turning away from stimulation, jerky movements, or fussiness that ramps up quickly. If you’re seeing these cues, the wake window has gone on too long. Shortening the gap between naps by even 15 to 20 minutes can make a noticeable difference.

Building Self-Soothing Skills

At four months, your baby is just beginning to develop the ability to calm down without your full intervention. This doesn’t mean you should expect them to do it independently. It means you can start a gradual progression that gives them small chances to settle before you step in completely.

A practical approach: when your baby fusses, start with the least amount of intervention and work your way up. Make eye contact and talk to them. Place a hand on their chest or belly. Gently hold their arms inward or curl their legs toward their belly. Roll them to their side (only while awake and supervised). Then pick them up, rock them, or offer a pacifier. Try each step for about five minutes before moving to the next. Five minutes feels long in the moment, but babies need time to process the calming input.

You can also try reducing how much stimulation you’re adding. Speak more quietly, move more slowly, and make your facial expressions less animated. Sometimes a baby who won’t settle is overstimulated rather than under-soothed. White noise, gentle massage, and the forearm hold (baby draped face-down along your forearm with their head near your elbow) are also worth trying. The key is consistency: when you use the same calming strategy each time, your baby begins to recognize the pattern and may settle more quickly over time.

The Sleep Environment Matters

Because your baby is now cycling through lighter sleep stages, environmental disruptions that never bothered them as a newborn can suddenly wake them up. A room that’s too bright, too warm, or too noisy during light sleep phases will cause more wake-ups.

Keep the room dark for sleep (blackout curtains help), maintain humidity between 35 and 50 percent, and use consistent white noise to mask household sounds. Temperature is a common overlooked issue. Babies who are too warm or too cool shift around more and wake more frequently. A good rule of thumb is dressing your baby in one layer more than you’d wear comfortably in the same room.

What Actually Helps During the Regression

There’s no way to skip or shorten the biological maturation causing the regression. But you can reduce its impact by keeping a few things consistent. Stick with predictable wake windows (1.5 to 2.5 hours), offer feeds when your baby seems hungry rather than trying to stretch intervals, and keep the bedtime routine the same each night. A short, simple routine works best: dim lights, a feed, a song or a few minutes of quiet holding, then into the sleep space drowsy.

Avoid introducing new sleep habits during the regression that you don’t want to maintain long-term. If you start driving your baby around the block every night at 2 a.m. to get them back to sleep, that can become the new expectation. The regression will pass, and whatever patterns you build during it tend to stick around.

If your baby’s sleep hasn’t improved after six weeks, or if the wake-ups seem to involve pain, unusual breathing, or a refusal to eat, those are signs that something beyond normal development may be at play. Reflux, ear infections, and food sensitivities can all mimic or worsen sleep regressions.
