Why Is My Body Sore All the Time? Common Causes

Persistent, all-over body soreness affects roughly one in four U.S. adults, with about 8.5% reporting pain severe enough to frequently limit their daily activities. If your body feels sore without an obvious reason, the cause is rarely a single factor. It typically involves some combination of poor sleep, chronic stress, nutritional gaps, medication side effects, or an underlying medical condition that needs attention.

Sleep Loss Literally Lowers Your Pain Threshold

One of the most overlooked causes of constant soreness is poor sleep. A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience found that sleep deprivation significantly lowered the temperature at which participants first registered pain, effectively expanding the range of sensations the brain classified as painful. In practical terms, stimuli that wouldn’t bother you after a full night’s rest start to hurt when you’re underslept.

This happens through two simultaneous changes in the brain. First, the sensory areas that process pain become more reactive. Second, the deeper brain regions responsible for modulating and dampening pain signals become less active. The result is a nervous system that amplifies discomfort and does a worse job filtering it out. If you’re consistently sleeping fewer than seven hours or waking unrefreshed, your body may not actually be more damaged. It may just be processing normal signals as pain.

How Chronic Stress Rewires Pain Processing

When you’re under prolonged stress, your body releases cortisol continuously rather than in short bursts. Over time, elevated cortisol increases the excitability of pain-signaling pathways in the spinal cord and brain, a process called central sensitization. Your nervous system essentially turns up its volume dial: nerve cells become more responsive, pain signals travel more efficiently, and even ordinary pressure or movement can register as soreness.

Research in The Journal of Pain showed that elevated cortisol triggers a chain of neurological changes that can make pain self-reinforcing. Stress hormones increase the activity of excitatory brain chemicals, which strengthen the connections between pain-processing neurons. Over time, these strengthened connections can consolidate into long-term changes, meaning your nervous system stays sensitized even after the original stressor resolves. This is one reason people under chronic work, financial, or emotional stress often develop widespread aches that don’t correspond to any visible injury.

Vitamin D and Other Nutritional Gaps

Vitamin D deficiency is a common and frequently missed cause of diffuse muscle pain and bone tenderness. Vitamin D receptors are present throughout skeletal muscle, and when levels drop below 20 ng/mL in the blood, the deficiency can cause proximal muscle weakness, global bone discomfort, and low back pain. Some people describe it as a deep, aching soreness that’s hard to localize, sometimes noticeable when pressing on the breastbone or shinbone.

Deficiency is especially common in people who spend most of their time indoors, live at higher latitudes, have darker skin, or are over 65. A simple blood test can check your levels. Insufficiency (20 to 30 ng/mL) can also contribute to vague musculoskeletal discomfort even before levels reach the clinical deficiency threshold. Low magnesium and iron deficiency can produce similar symptoms, so a basic nutritional workup is worth requesting if soreness persists without explanation.

Medications That Cause Muscle Soreness

Statins, the cholesterol-lowering drugs taken by tens of millions of people, are one of the most common pharmaceutical causes of persistent body soreness. Between 10% and 25% of people taking statins report muscle symptoms including aching, cramping, and general soreness. When researchers in the STOMP trial compared statin users to a placebo group, about 5% of the statin group experienced true drug-related muscle symptoms, while the rest of the reported soreness was likely coincidental or driven by expectation.

The risk of statin-related soreness increases when you’re also taking certain other medications, including some antifungals, certain antibiotics, some blood pressure drugs, and several antidepressants, because these can interfere with how your body breaks down the statin. If you started a new medication in the weeks or months before your soreness began, that timing is worth flagging to your prescriber.

Overtraining and Inadequate Recovery

Exercise is supposed to make you feel better, but too much of it without adequate rest can leave you feeling sore all the time. Overtraining syndrome develops gradually when the body doesn’t get enough recovery between sessions. In its early stage, symptoms are subtle and easy to dismiss as normal post-workout soreness. As it progresses, you may notice a resting heart rate above 100 beats per minute, elevated blood pressure, persistent fatigue, and soreness that doesn’t resolve between workouts.

The distinction matters: normal delayed-onset muscle soreness peaks 24 to 72 hours after a hard workout and resolves on its own. If soreness lingers for days regardless of what you did at the gym, or if you feel worse rather than better after rest days, your training load may have exceeded your body’s capacity to recover. This is especially common when people rapidly increase their exercise volume or combine intense training with poor sleep and high stress.

When Inflammation Becomes the Problem

At the cellular level, your immune system responds to tissue stress by sending specialized immune cells to the affected area. These cells release inflammatory molecules, primarily compounds that increase pain sensitivity and swelling. In a healthy cycle, anti-inflammatory signals follow to resolve the process. But when the initial trigger persists, whether from repeated physical stress, chronic infection, autoimmune activity, or obesity, the inflammatory phase never fully shuts off.

Regular moderate exercise helps break this cycle. Research on animal models has shown that consistent aerobic activity shifts the balance of immune cells in muscle tissue toward anti-inflammatory types, increasing the production of inflammation-resolving signals. This is one reason why moderate movement often reduces chronic soreness even when it feels counterintuitive to move a body that already hurts.

Medical Conditions Worth Ruling Out

Several diagnosable conditions cause persistent widespread soreness. The most relevant ones to consider:

  • Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain lasting at least three months, along with fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, and cognitive difficulties sometimes called “brain fog.” Diagnosis uses a Widespread Pain Index that maps 19 body areas and a symptom severity scale. There’s no blood test for it. It’s a clinical diagnosis based on your symptom pattern.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis involves the immune system attacking joint linings, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling that often affects both sides of the body symmetrically. Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes is a hallmark.
  • Polymyalgia rheumatica primarily affects adults over 50 and causes severe stiffness and aching in the shoulders, neck, and hips, typically worst in the morning.
  • Hypothyroidism slows your metabolism and can cause muscle aches, joint pain, fatigue, and weight gain. A thyroid function blood test is straightforward and inexpensive.
  • Autoimmune conditions like lupus and psoriatic arthritis can produce body-wide pain as part of systemic inflammation.

The percentage of adults reporting chronic pain increases sharply with age, from about 12% among 18 to 29 year olds to 36% among those 65 and older. Women are slightly more likely than men to experience chronic pain (25.4% vs. 23.2%). These numbers suggest that some degree of persistent soreness becomes statistically common as you age, but “common” doesn’t mean “inevitable” or “untreatable.”

Patterns That Help Identify the Cause

Pay attention to a few key features of your soreness. When it started matters: gradual onset over months points toward lifestyle factors, nutritional deficiency, or a slowly developing condition, while onset within weeks of a new medication or major life stressor narrows the possibilities quickly. Where you feel it matters too. Soreness concentrated in muscles suggests overtraining, vitamin D deficiency, or medication side effects. Soreness centered in joints, especially with stiffness and swelling, points more toward arthritis or autoimmune conditions.

How your soreness responds to activity is another useful clue. Pain that improves with gentle movement and worsens with rest is more typical of inflammatory conditions. Pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest suggests overuse or mechanical issues. And soreness that seems disconnected from anything physical, fluctuating with your mood, stress levels, or sleep quality, often reflects central sensitization or fibromyalgia rather than tissue damage.
