Why Is My Cat Walking Weird? Causes & When to Worry

A cat walking oddly can signal anything from a minor muscle strain to a serious medical emergency. The cause depends heavily on what “weird” looks like: limping on one leg points toward pain or injury, walking like they’re drunk suggests a neurological problem, and suddenly dragging the back legs could be a life-threatening blood clot. Identifying the specific pattern helps you figure out how urgently your cat needs veterinary care.

Limping or Reluctance to Move

If your cat is favoring one leg, taking shorter steps than usual, or simply refusing to jump onto surfaces they used to reach easily, the most common culprit is pain in a joint or limb. Arthritis is widespread in cats, especially as they age. One study found 61% of cats older than six had some degree of joint disease, and about a quarter of cats over twelve had it in their limb joints specifically.

Unlike dogs, cats with arthritis rarely limp in an obvious way. Instead, the signs are subtle: a general slowdown in activity, reluctance to move even when coaxed with treats, a messy or unkempt coat (because grooming requires flexibility), and sometimes increased irritability. You might notice your cat hesitating before jumping up or down, or choosing to sleep in lower spots. These changes often creep in gradually over months, making them easy to dismiss as “just getting old.”

A newer treatment option for feline arthritis involves a monthly injection that blocks a protein responsible for joint pain signaling. In clinical trials, about 73% of treated cats showed meaningful improvement by eight weeks, compared to roughly 33% of cats given a placebo. This gives owners of arthritic cats a practical option beyond traditional pain medications, which cats often tolerate poorly.

Ligament tears in the knee can also cause sudden limping, though they’re far less common in cats than in dogs. A vet can usually detect this on physical exam by checking for abnormal movement in the knee joint.

Walking Like They’re Drunk

A wobbly, uncoordinated gait, sometimes called ataxia, looks distinctly different from a limp. Your cat may sway, stagger, overshoot when reaching for something, or seem unable to judge where their feet are landing. There are three main types, and each looks slightly different.

Cerebellar ataxia affects the part of the brain that fine-tunes movement. Cats with this type walk with exaggerated, high-stepping strides and may stand with their legs spread wide apart, swaying. You might notice a tremor in their head, especially when they’re focused on something like food. They still have full strength in their legs.

Vestibular ataxia involves the inner ear or the brain’s balance center. This is the one that most closely resembles seasickness. Your cat will tilt their head to one side, fall or lean toward that same side, and may circle in one direction. Their eyes often flick back and forth rapidly. Some cats vomit. This can come on suddenly and look terrifying, but idiopathic vestibular disease (the most common cause) often resolves on its own within days.

Spinal ataxia results from damage to the spinal cord’s sensory pathways. Unlike the other two types, this one comes with actual weakness. Your cat’s head and eyes look normal, but their legs don’t seem to know where they are. They may drag their paws or place them awkwardly, knuckling over on their toes.

Flat-Footed Walking on the Hocks

One of the most distinctive abnormal gaits in cats is a “flat-footed” stance where the cat walks on the full length of its back legs, with the hocks (ankles) touching the ground. Cats normally walk on their toes, so this posture is immediately noticeable and looks almost plantigrade, like a human’s stance.

This is a hallmark of diabetic nerve damage. Prolonged high blood sugar damages the protective coating around nerves in the legs, causing them to degenerate. The result is weakness that progresses from subtle unsteadiness to a dramatic dropped stance. In some cats, the front legs are also affected. Getting blood sugar under control is critical, because the nerve damage can worsen over time.

Sudden Paralysis of the Back Legs

This is the emergency scenario. If your cat suddenly can’t use one or both back legs, is crying out in pain, and the affected legs feel cold to the touch, the likely cause is a blood clot that has lodged where the aorta splits to supply the hind limbs. This is sometimes called a “saddle thrombus.”

Vets identify it using five signs: pale or bluish toe pads, cold legs, no pulse in the affected limbs, paralysis or severe weakness, and intense pain. The condition is most common in cats with underlying heart disease, sometimes before the owner even knew a heart problem existed.

Time matters. Expert guidelines suggest that clot-dissolving treatment may be considered if the cat is seen within six hours of onset. Cats that respond to treatment typically show improvement in their ability to walk and regain pulses within 24 to 48 hours. However, survival rates are sobering: only about 50% of affected cats survive the first 48 hours. If you see this pattern, get to an emergency vet immediately.

Poisoning and Toxic Exposures

Sudden uncoordinated walking, especially paired with drooling, sluggishness, heavy breathing, or vomiting, can indicate poisoning. Cats are uniquely vulnerable because their livers lack certain enzymes that other animals use to break down toxins. Common culprits include:

  • Human medications: Acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen, aspirin, antidepressants, and cold medicines
  • Dog flea and tick products: Permethrin-based spot-on treatments designed for dogs are highly toxic to cats
  • Antifreeze: Contains ethylene glycol, which tastes sweet and causes kidney failure
  • Plants: Lilies are especially dangerous, causing kidney failure even in tiny amounts. Tulips, foxglove, and philodendron are also toxic
  • Rodent poison: Can cause internal bleeding, seizures, or kidney damage depending on the type
  • Foods: Grapes, raisins, onions, chocolate, avocados, and anything containing xylitol

If you suspect your cat ingested something toxic and is now walking abnormally, this is a same-day emergency. Bring the product packaging if you can identify what they got into.

Infections That Affect the Brain and Spine

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) can cause progressive neurological symptoms, including worsening coordination. The earliest sign is typically a gradual loss of balance, often starting with reluctance to jump up or down. The incoordination usually appears first in the back legs but spreads quickly. Cats with spinal cord involvement may also develop incontinence or tail paralysis.

FIP most commonly strikes young cats, usually under two years old. The neurological form occurs in roughly half of “dry” FIP cases. While FIP was once considered uniformly fatal, antiviral treatments have dramatically changed outcomes in recent years.

What Your Vet Will Do

A veterinary mobility exam is more structured than it might appear. The vet will start by watching your cat walk, chase a toy, or navigate small obstacles like boxes to evaluate stride length and spot asymmetries. They’ll look for specific clues: a head bob when the front legs are affected, a hip hike when the back legs are involved, or an asymmetrical tail swing that signals one side is compensating for the other.

Next comes hands-on examination. The vet palpates the spine and each limb, comparing muscle mass on both sides and feeling joints for swelling. They’ll flex and extend each joint individually, watching for pain responses. Specific tests check for knee instability (by trying to slide the shin bone forward relative to the thigh bone) and hip looseness (by feeling for an abnormal “click” when rotating the joint).

Depending on what the physical exam reveals, your vet may recommend X-rays, blood work to check for diabetes or other metabolic issues, or advanced imaging like an MRI for suspected neurological problems. Sedation is common during orthopedic exams because it allows for a more accurate assessment without your cat tensing up in pain or fear.

Tracking Changes at Home

Because cats are masters at hiding discomfort, keeping a log of your cat’s mobility can help you and your vet catch problems earlier and monitor whether treatment is working. Pay attention to activities that require strength and flexibility: jumping onto counters or beds, going up and down stairs, using the litter box (especially one with high sides), and grooming hard-to-reach areas like the lower back.

Record short videos of your cat walking on your phone. Gait abnormalities that seem obvious at home can be impossible to reproduce in a stressful veterinary clinic, and video gives your vet a much clearer picture of what you’re seeing. Note whether the odd walking is constant or comes and goes, whether it’s worse after rest or after activity, and whether it affects the front legs, back legs, or both.
