A dog limping on a back leg without crying or whimpering is still very likely in pain. Dogs are hardwired to hide discomfort, so the absence of vocalization tells you almost nothing about how serious the problem is. The limp itself is the pain signal, and it points to a range of causes from a minor paw injury to a torn ligament or joint disease.
Why Your Dog Isn’t Crying
From an evolutionary standpoint, showing pain is a liability. An injured animal that vocalizes and moves abnormally draws attention from predators and signals vulnerability. Research in evolutionary biology suggests that chronic pain expressed openly is likely maladaptive for most species because it interferes with the physical activity needed to survive. In other words, dogs that hid their injuries survived longer and passed that trait on.
This means your dog may be dealing with significant discomfort, even a partial or complete ligament tear, while barely changing their behavior beyond the limp. Cornell University’s veterinary program identifies several non-vocal pain signals to watch for instead: excessive panting even at rest, repeatedly licking or chewing one spot on the leg, flattened ears, glazed eyes, or a general change in facial expression. If your dog is doing any of these alongside the limp, pain is almost certainly the reason.
Knee Ligament Tears
The most common serious cause of back-leg limping in dogs is a torn cranial cruciate ligament, the canine equivalent of an ACL tear in humans. This ligament stabilizes the knee (called the stifle in dogs), and when it ruptures, the leg becomes unstable.
A torn cruciate typically shows up in one of two ways. An acute tear causes sudden lameness with a characteristic “toe-touching” gait, where the dog barely sets the foot down. A partial or chronic tear often starts with a noticeable limp that improves with rest but never fully goes away. Over time, you may notice the muscles in the affected thigh getting visibly thinner compared to the other leg, and the knee itself may feel thicker or swollen due to fluid buildup and scar tissue.
If both knees are affected at the same time, which does happen, the dog may have serious difficulty standing up and can look like they have a neurological problem rather than a joint injury. At the vet, the diagnosis involves specific hands-on manipulation of the knee to check for abnormal forward movement of the shin bone, sometimes combined with X-rays. Surgery is often the recommended path for medium and large dogs. The most common procedure involves stabilizing the knee joint, and recovery typically takes 8 to 12 weeks of strict rest followed by gradual return to activity. Most dogs regain good limb use afterward, though long-term joint care matters for keeping them comfortable.
Luxating Patella (Slipping Kneecap)
If your dog’s limp comes and goes, especially with a distinctive “skip” mid-stride, a luxating patella is a strong possibility. This happens when the kneecap slides out of its normal groove, temporarily locking the leg. You might see your dog stretch the affected leg backward while walking, which is their way of popping the kneecap back into place.
Luxating patellas are graded on a four-point scale. Grade I causes little to no lameness, and many owners never notice it. Grade II produces that classic intermittent skipping gait. At grades III and IV, the kneecap is displaced most or all of the time and can’t be manually repositioned, leading to a more persistent limp and eventual joint damage. Small breeds are especially prone, but it occurs in dogs of all sizes. Mild cases may only need weight management and controlled exercise, while higher grades typically require surgical correction.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip dysplasia causes the hip joint to develop abnormally, leading to looseness, inflammation, and eventually arthritis. The hallmark signs are difficulty getting up after resting, a swaying gait, and “bunny hopping” when running, where both back legs move together instead of alternating. Many dogs with hip dysplasia are stiff in the morning or after a nap but loosen up after a few minutes of movement.
This condition is largely genetic and most common in large and giant breeds, though it can appear in any dog. It tends to develop gradually, so the limping may worsen slowly over weeks or months. Your vet can feel for grinding (crepitation) when rotating the hip and compare the position of the hip bones on both sides to check for displacement.
Paw and Foot Problems
Before assuming the worst, check the simplest explanation first: something may be wrong with the paw itself. Spread your dog’s toes apart and inspect the webbing and pads for cuts, swelling, or embedded objects like thorns or foxtails. Check each toenail for cracks or breaks, and gently squeeze each toe to see if any spot triggers a flinch.
Painful nodules between the toes, sometimes called interdigital cysts, are actually deep skin infections. They appear as red, swollen bumps in the webbing and often cause obvious lameness and compulsive licking of the affected foot. These can be triggered by foreign material like grass awns getting embedded in the skin, or by repeated friction from rough surfaces. They tend to recur if the underlying cause isn’t addressed. A single lesion on one foot is more likely a foreign body, while multiple or recurring bumps suggest an underlying skin condition.
How to Pinpoint the Problem at Home
You can narrow down the source of the limp with a careful, gentle examination. Start at the paw and work your way up. Spread the toes and check the pads, then feel along each toe bone for swelling or tenderness. Move to the ankle (hock) and gently flex and extend it; normal flexion allows the joint to close to about a 45-degree angle. Feel along the shin bone for any lumps, swelling, or spots that cause your dog to pull away.
At the knee, compare both sides by placing a hand on each stifle simultaneously. Any noticeable difference in size or firmness suggests swelling. Flex and extend the knee while resting your hand on the front of the joint to feel for grinding or popping. Then move to the hip: extend and flex it while feeling over the bony prominence on the outside of the thigh. Grinding here points toward arthritis or dysplasia.
Pay attention to when the limp is worst. Stiffness after rest that improves with movement suggests arthritis or hip dysplasia. A sudden limp during play or exercise points toward a soft tissue injury or ligament tear. Intermittent skipping that resolves on its own is classic for a slipping kneecap.
What the Limp Pattern Tells You
- Toe-touching or non-weight-bearing: The dog barely puts the foot down. This usually indicates significant acute pain, such as a complete ligament tear, fracture, or severe paw injury.
- Weight-bearing but uneven: The dog uses the leg but shortens the stride or leans away from it. Common with partial ligament tears, hip dysplasia, or arthritis.
- Intermittent skipping: The leg lifts for a stride or two, then returns to normal. Strongly associated with a luxating patella.
- Stiff after rest, better with movement: Typical of arthritis or hip dysplasia, where inflammation settles during inactivity and loosens once the joint warms up.
- Bunny hopping: Both back legs move in unison during a run. Points toward bilateral hip or knee problems.
When the Limp Needs Prompt Attention
A mild limp that appears after a long hike and resolves within 24 to 48 hours of rest is generally a muscle strain. But a limp that persists beyond two or three days, worsens over time, or comes with visible swelling, heat in the joint, or an inability to bear weight warrants a veterinary exam. The same applies if you notice progressive muscle wasting in one leg compared to the other, which is a sign of chronic disuse from ongoing pain your dog has been silently enduring.
The fact that your dog isn’t crying should give you no reassurance that the problem is minor. A dog with a completely torn cruciate ligament can walk around the house, eat dinner, and wag their tail without making a sound. The limp is the cry.
