Why Is My Hair Falling Out at 16? Causes & Fixes

Losing hair at 16 is more common than you might think, and in most cases it’s temporary. Everyone sheds between 50 and 150 hairs a day as part of the normal growth cycle. If you’re noticing more than that, clumps in the shower, a widening part, or thinning patches, something is pushing your body out of balance. The cause is usually one of a handful of things: hormones, stress, nutrition, hairstyling habits, or an underlying health condition.

Hormonal Changes During Puberty

Puberty floods your body with new hormones, and some of them directly affect hair. One called DHT (a more potent form of testosterone) is responsible for growing facial hair, body hair, and pubic hair. But DHT can also shrink the follicles on your scalp and shorten the hair growth cycle, causing thinning on the top and front of your head. This is the same hormone behind male pattern hair loss in adults, and in some teens, especially boys, it starts earlier than expected. A family history of thinning hair makes this more likely.

For girls, a condition called PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) can cause the body to produce higher than normal levels of androgens, the same family of hormones that includes DHT. PCOS-related hair thinning usually doesn’t happen in isolation. It tends to come alongside other signs: acne, weight gain concentrated around the waist, irregular periods, excess hair growth on the face or body, and darkened patches of skin around the neck or armpits. If several of those sound familiar, it’s worth bringing up with a doctor. The underlying issue is often that your body is producing too much insulin, which signals your ovaries to release extra androgens.

Stress-Related Shedding

If your hair loss seemed to come out of nowhere, think back two to three months. That’s the typical delay between a stressful event and visible shedding. This type of hair loss is called telogen effluvium, and it happens when a physical or emotional stressor pushes a large number of hair follicles into their resting phase all at once. A few months later, those hairs fall out together.

The triggers are wide-ranging: a serious illness, surgery, a high fever, rapid weight loss, an intensely stressful period at school or home, or even starting a new medication. The good news is that acute telogen effluvium typically lasts fewer than six months, and hair regrows on its own once the stressor passes. If the shedding continues beyond that window, the underlying cause may still be active.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Your body needs specific nutrients to grow hair, and at 16 your nutritional demands are high. Iron deficiency is one of the most common culprits, particularly for girls who have started menstruating. Your body stores iron as a protein called ferritin, and when those stores drop too low, hair growth is one of the first things your body deprioritizes. Normal ferritin levels range from about 20 to 200 nanograms per milliliter for females and 20 to 500 for males, but many dermatologists consider levels below 30 or 40 insufficient for healthy hair growth even if they’re technically “in range.”

Vitamin D, zinc, and protein deficiencies can also contribute. Restrictive dieting, skipping meals, or cutting out entire food groups (common patterns among teenagers) can quietly starve your hair follicles. A simple blood test can check your iron, ferritin, vitamin D, and thyroid levels, giving you a clear picture of whether nutrition is part of the problem.

Hairstyles and Styling Damage

Tight hairstyles are a surprisingly common cause of hair loss in teenagers. When hair is pulled back with constant tension, the follicles along your hairline and temples can become damaged over time. This is called traction alopecia, and it’s linked to cornrows, tight braids, locs, high ponytails, buns, and hair extensions or weaves, especially on chemically relaxed hair. Even wearing a hat or headscarf over tightly pulled hair can contribute.

Your body gives you warning signs before permanent damage sets in. Pain or stinging on your scalp, crusting, or visible “tenting” where sections of skin are pulled upward all mean the style is too tight. If you notice these, change your hairstyle right away. Early traction alopecia is fully reversible. But if the pulling continues long enough, the follicles eventually scar over and stop producing hair entirely. At that point, the loss is permanent.

Medications That Cause Hair Loss

Some medications commonly prescribed to teenagers can trigger shedding. Hormonal birth control, including pills, patches, injections, and implants, contains a synthetic hormone called progestin that can act like an androgen in your body. This means it can shrink hair follicles the same way DHT does. Some formulations of birth control have stronger androgenic effects than others, and people who are already sensitive to hormonal changes or have a family history of hair loss are more likely to be affected.

Acne medications, certain antidepressants, and medications for ADHD or seizures can also list hair loss as a side effect. If your shedding started within a few months of beginning a new prescription, the timing is worth noting.

Autoimmune Hair Loss

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition where your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. It looks different from other types of hair loss: you’ll typically see smooth, round, sharply defined patches of bare skin on your scalp, with no scarring or flaking. Sometimes you can spot short, tapered hairs at the edges of the patch that are thinner at the base, almost like exclamation points.

Alopecia areata can start at any age but often first appears during childhood or the teen years. In most cases it affects only a few small patches and hair regrows within months. Less commonly, it can progress to affect the entire scalp or, rarely, the whole body. The condition is unpredictable, with hair that may regrow and then fall out again in cycles. If you notice one or more distinct bald patches, that pattern is distinctive enough that a doctor can usually identify it on sight.

Signs That Need Medical Attention

Some patterns of hair loss are worth getting checked sooner rather than later. Distinct round bald patches, scarring or redness on the scalp, rapid or sudden loss of large amounts of hair, and hair loss paired with other symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, or irregular periods all point toward causes that benefit from early treatment. A doctor can run blood work to check for thyroid problems, iron deficiency, and hormonal imbalances, and a dermatologist can examine your scalp to distinguish between different types of hair loss.

Traction alopecia in particular has a narrow window for reversal. If you’re seeing thinning along your hairline and you regularly wear tight styles, acting early is the difference between temporary and permanent loss.
