Why Is My Heart Rate Always High? Common Causes

A resting heart rate that consistently stays above 100 beats per minute is classified as tachycardia, and it almost always points to something your body is responding to, whether that’s a medical condition, a lifestyle factor, or both. The good news is that most causes are identifiable and treatable. The key is figuring out which one applies to you.

What Counts as “Always High”

Normal resting heart rate falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute. If yours regularly sits in the upper 90s or above 100 when you’re sitting quietly, that’s worth paying attention to. A single high reading after climbing stairs or drinking coffee isn’t the issue. The concern is a pattern: your heart rate is elevated even when you’re calm, rested, and haven’t recently been active.

It helps to measure consistently. Check your pulse first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, or after sitting quietly for at least five minutes. If you’re using a smartwatch or fitness tracker, look at the trend over days and weeks rather than any single reading. A resting rate that hovers above 100 on most days is the pattern that warrants investigation.

Dehydration and Low Blood Volume

One of the simplest and most overlooked causes of a persistently fast heart rate is not drinking enough water. When you’re dehydrated, the total volume of blood circulating through your body drops. Your heart compensates by beating faster to maintain adequate blood flow to your organs. This places extra strain on the heart even though nothing is structurally wrong with it.

This is especially common in people who drink a lot of coffee or alcohol (both are diuretics), exercise without replacing fluids, or simply don’t feel thirsty often enough to keep up with their needs. If your heart rate drops noticeably after a day of deliberate hydration, dehydration was likely contributing.

Anxiety and Stress

Chronic stress and anxiety disorders are among the most common reasons for a heart rate that feels “always” elevated. Your nervous system has two modes: the fight-or-flight response that speeds everything up, and the rest-and-digest response that slows things down. In people with generalized anxiety, chronic work stress, or unresolved trauma, the fight-or-flight system can stay partially activated for hours or even days at a time, keeping heart rate elevated well above baseline.

Panic attacks can push this even further. During a panic attack, heart rate can spike dramatically, and the symptoms (racing heart, dizziness, chest tightness, sweating) overlap almost perfectly with a heart rhythm condition called supraventricular tachycardia, or SVT. During SVT episodes, heart rate can soar above 250 beats per minute. The key difference is that panic attacks typically come with a feeling of impending doom or loss of control, while SVT tends to start and stop abruptly without that psychological component. If you’re unsure which you’re experiencing, a heart monitor worn over several days can capture what’s actually happening during an episode.

Thyroid Problems

Your thyroid gland acts like a throttle for your metabolism. When it produces too much hormone, a condition called hyperthyroidism, it directly speeds up your heart’s pacemaker cells. Thyroid hormone changes how quickly those cells fire by altering the electrical currents that control each heartbeat. It also amplifies your body’s response to adrenaline, so normal everyday stimuli produce a bigger cardiovascular response than they should.

Other signs that your thyroid might be the culprit include unexplained weight loss, feeling hot when others are comfortable, trembling hands, difficulty sleeping, and feeling wired or jittery. A simple blood test can confirm or rule this out, and it’s one of the first things most doctors will check when someone reports a persistently fast heart rate.

Physical Deconditioning

If you’ve been sedentary for a long stretch, your heart becomes less efficient at pumping blood. Each beat pushes out a smaller volume, so the heart has to beat more often to deliver the same amount of oxygen. This is why people who are very fit often have resting heart rates in the 50s or even 40s: their hearts pump more blood per beat, so fewer beats are needed.

The flip side is that prolonged inactivity, bed rest after an illness, or a sudden stop in regular exercise can push resting heart rate upward by 10 to 20 beats per minute or more. Gradually increasing your aerobic activity (walking, swimming, cycling) is one of the most reliable ways to bring a high resting heart rate down over weeks to months.

POTS and Positional Changes

If your heart rate is fine when you’re lying down but jumps significantly when you stand up, you may be dealing with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS. The diagnostic threshold is a heart rate increase of at least 30 beats per minute within the first 10 minutes of standing (40 bpm for adolescents), without a corresponding drop in blood pressure.

POTS is more common in women between 15 and 50, and it often follows a viral illness, surgery, or pregnancy. People with POTS frequently describe feeling like their heart races “all the time” because most of daily life involves being upright. Other symptoms include lightheadedness, brain fog, fatigue, and sometimes fainting. If this pattern sounds familiar, a simple at-home test can give you preliminary information: take your heart rate after lying down for five minutes, then stand and check it again at one, five, and ten minutes.

Medications and Substances

Several common medications and over-the-counter products can raise your resting heart rate. Cold and cough medicines containing decongestants like pseudoephedrine are frequent offenders. Asthma inhalers that contain bronchodilators can also speed things up. Some antidepressants, ADHD medications, and weight loss supplements have stimulant properties that affect heart rate.

Recreational drugs, particularly cocaine and methamphetamine, cause dramatic and dangerous increases in heart rate. Nicotine from cigarettes, vapes, or patches raises heart rate by about 10 to 20 beats per minute on average. Even alcohol, though it can feel relaxing, disrupts heart rhythm and can elevate resting rate, particularly with heavy or regular use.

Caffeine has a more nuanced relationship with heart rate than most people assume. Research published in Circulation found that coffee actually caused a small decrease in heart rate (around 2 to 4 beats per minute) in the hour after drinking it, likely because it also raises blood pressure, which triggers a reflex that slows the heart. However, individual responses vary widely. Some people, especially those who don’t drink coffee regularly, are far more sensitive to its stimulant effects and do experience a noticeable heart rate increase.

Anemia and Other Medical Causes

Anemia, a condition where your blood carries less oxygen than normal, forces your heart to beat faster to compensate. This is similar to the dehydration mechanism: less oxygen per unit of blood means more beats are needed to keep tissues supplied. Iron deficiency anemia is especially common in women with heavy menstrual periods and in people with poor dietary iron intake. Fatigue, pale skin, and feeling short of breath during light activity are classic accompanying signs.

Other medical conditions that can keep heart rate elevated include fever or chronic infections (heart rate rises roughly 10 beats per minute for every degree of fever), sleep apnea, diabetes, and heart valve problems. Rarely, the heart’s own electrical system has a wiring issue that causes it to beat too fast without any external trigger.

Why It Matters Long-Term

A heart rate that stays elevated for months or years isn’t just uncomfortable. It forces the heart to work harder around the clock, which over time can weaken the heart muscle itself. This is called tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy, and it can progress to heart failure if the underlying cause isn’t addressed. The heart is a muscle, and like any muscle asked to sprint continuously, it eventually wears down.

Persistent tachycardia also increases the risk of blood clots, stroke, and sudden cardiac events, particularly when it involves abnormal rhythms rather than just a fast normal rhythm. The reassuring part is that tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy is often reversible once the heart rate is brought under control.

Narrowing Down Your Cause

Because so many different things can keep heart rate elevated, identifying the right one matters more than trying generic fixes. Start by looking at the most common and correctable factors: hydration, sleep, stress levels, caffeine and nicotine intake, and any medications you started before the problem began. Track your resting heart rate at the same time each day for two weeks to establish a clear pattern.

If your resting heart rate is consistently above 100, or if it’s accompanied by dizziness, chest pain, fainting, or shortness of breath, that warrants medical evaluation. The workup is straightforward: typically a physical exam, blood tests (checking thyroid function, blood counts, and basic metabolic markers), and an electrocardiogram to look at your heart’s electrical activity. In some cases, you’ll be asked to wear a portable heart monitor for a few days to catch what’s happening during your normal routine. Most causes, once identified, respond well to targeted treatment.
