Why Is My Heart Rate Elevated? Causes & When to Worry

A normal resting heart rate falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute. If yours is consistently above that range, or noticeably higher than your personal baseline, something is pushing it up. The causes range from everyday factors like caffeine, dehydration, or poor sleep to medical conditions that need attention. Understanding what’s behind the change helps you figure out whether it’s temporary or worth investigating.

What Counts as Elevated

Doctors define tachycardia as a resting heart rate above 100 beats per minute. But “elevated” is relative. If your resting rate normally sits around 65 and it’s been hovering at 85 for days, that shift matters even though 85 is technically normal. Well-trained athletes can have resting rates near 40 bpm, so for them, even 80 might feel unusual. The number that matters most is how your current rate compares to your own baseline, not just whether it falls inside the textbook range.

To get an accurate resting heart rate, check it first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, or after sitting quietly for at least five minutes. Rates taken after walking, eating, or scrolling stressful news will read higher and don’t reflect your true baseline.

Dehydration and Low Blood Volume

This is one of the most common and most overlooked causes. When you’re dehydrated, the volume of blood circulating through your body drops. Your heart compensates by beating faster to maintain the same delivery of oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. The effect is especially pronounced during heat exposure or after exercise, when blood also gets redirected toward the skin to help cool you down. That further reduces the volume available for your heart to pump, driving the rate even higher.

If your elevated heart rate coincides with dark urine, dry mouth, fatigue, or a day when you simply forgot to drink enough water, dehydration is a likely culprit. Rehydrating usually brings the rate back down within an hour or two.

Caffeine, Nicotine, and Other Substances

Caffeine is a stimulant that directly increases heart rate, and the effect can linger. People who consume high amounts (roughly six or more cups of coffee per day, or over 600 mg of caffeine) show elevated heart rates that persist even after rest, according to data presented through the American College of Cardiology. Moderate amounts affect most people less dramatically, but sensitivity varies widely. If you’ve recently increased your coffee, energy drink, or pre-workout supplement intake, that alone could explain the change.

Nicotine raises heart rate through the same stress-hormone pathway that anxiety uses. Alcohol can do it too, particularly in larger amounts. Stimulant medications for ADHD, decongestants containing pseudoephedrine, and even asthma inhalers (which contain bronchodilators) all list elevated heart rate as a known side effect. If your heart rate climbed around the same time you started a new medication or supplement, that connection is worth exploring with your prescriber.

Stress, Anxiety, and Sleep

Emotional stress triggers the release of hormones that act directly on the cardiovascular system, raising both heart rate and blood pressure. This is the classic fight-or-flight response, and it’s perfectly normal in short bursts. The problem comes when stress is chronic. People with anxiety disorders can experience inappropriate surges of these stress hormones throughout the day, keeping the heart rate elevated even when there’s no real threat.

During a panic attack, heart rate can spike dramatically, sometimes reaching 120 to 150 bpm or higher. This often feels indistinguishable from a cardiac event, which creates more anxiety and pushes the rate even higher. Poor sleep feeds into this cycle too. Even one night of significantly reduced sleep raises resting heart rate the following day, and chronic sleep deprivation keeps it elevated over time. Many people notice their smartwatch shows a higher overnight heart rate after a stressful day or a late night, and that’s a reliable signal.

Fever and Illness

When your body fights an infection, it raises its internal temperature, and your heart speeds up in response. The general rule is about 10 extra beats per minute for every degree of fever. So a temperature of 101°F (about two degrees above normal) could push your resting rate up by 20 bpm on its own. Add in dehydration from sweating, reduced fluid intake, or the inflammatory response itself, and the increase can be even larger.

This is a normal part of being sick and resolves as the infection clears. However, some people notice their resting heart rate stays elevated for weeks or even months after a viral illness. Post-viral syndromes, including those following COVID-19, can cause a condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), where heart rate jumps by 30 or more beats per minute simply from standing up. POTS is diagnosed when this increase occurs within the first 10 minutes of standing, without a corresponding drop in blood pressure that would explain it.

Thyroid Problems

An overactive thyroid gland is one of the most important medical causes to rule out. When the thyroid produces too much hormone, it increases the heart’s contractility, raises resting heart rate, and can push cardiac output 50% to 300% above normal levels. A fast pulse is so characteristic of hyperthyroidism that it’s present in nearly all patients with the condition.

Other signs include unexplained weight loss, feeling hot when others are comfortable, trembling hands, irritability, and frequent bowel movements. If your elevated heart rate is accompanied by any of these, a simple blood test can confirm or rule out thyroid dysfunction.

Anemia and Low Iron

When your blood carries fewer red blood cells or less hemoglobin (the protein that transports oxygen), your heart beats faster to compensate for the reduced oxygen delivery per beat. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common form and is especially prevalent in women with heavy periods, people with poor dietary iron intake, and those with gastrointestinal conditions that impair absorption.

Clues that anemia might be driving your elevated heart rate include unusual fatigue, pale skin, cold hands and feet, and feeling winded during activities that didn’t used to challenge you. Like thyroid disease, this is straightforward to detect with routine blood work.

Physical Deconditioning

If you’ve been less active than usual, whether from an injury, illness, a desk-heavy stretch at work, or just falling out of a routine, your cardiovascular fitness declines. A less efficient heart needs more beats to circulate the same amount of blood. This is one of the most common reasons people notice their resting heart rate creeping up over weeks or months. The fix is gradual: even moderate aerobic activity like brisk walking, done consistently, brings resting heart rate down over a period of several weeks.

Heart Rhythm Disorders

Sometimes an elevated rate reflects an electrical problem in the heart itself rather than an outside trigger. Conditions like atrial fibrillation (an irregular, often rapid heartbeat originating in the upper chambers) and supraventricular tachycardia (sudden episodes of rapid heartbeat) can cause sustained or episodic rate elevation. These often feel different from the gradual increase caused by dehydration or stress. You might notice a sudden onset, a fluttering or pounding sensation, or a rate that seems disproportionate to what you’re doing.

These conditions range from benign nuisances to serious problems depending on the type, frequency, and your overall heart health. An electrocardiogram (ECG) is the primary tool used to identify them, and a wearable heart monitor worn for days or weeks can catch episodes that come and go.

When an Elevated Heart Rate Is Urgent

Most causes of a mildly elevated heart rate are not emergencies. But certain accompanying symptoms change that picture. Seek immediate medical attention if your rapid heart rate comes with chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, dizziness or lightheadedness, fainting or near-fainting, or sudden weakness. These combinations can signal a dangerous arrhythmia, a blood clot, or another cardiac event that requires rapid evaluation.

Even without those red flags, a resting heart rate that stays above 100 bpm for days without a clear explanation (like an obvious illness or stimulant use) warrants a medical workup. Basic blood tests for thyroid function, anemia, and electrolyte balance, along with an ECG, can quickly narrow down or rule out the most common medical causes.
