Why Is My Heart Rate So High? Causes and Warning Signs

A resting heart rate above 100 beats per minute is considered tachycardia, and it has dozens of possible causes ranging from a cup of coffee to an underlying medical condition. For adults, the normal resting range is 60 to 100 bpm, though well-trained athletes often sit in the 40s or 50s. If your heart rate is consistently elevated or spiking without obvious explanation, understanding the most common triggers can help you figure out what’s going on.

What Counts as a High Heart Rate

The American Heart Association defines tachycardia as a resting heart rate over 100 bpm. “Resting” means you’re awake, sitting or lying down, and haven’t been exercising. Your heart rate naturally rises during physical activity, and it can drop lower during sleep, so context matters when you check.

A single high reading doesn’t necessarily signal a problem. Checking your pulse right after climbing stairs, drinking coffee, or feeling startled will give you an inflated number. The more useful measurement is your resting heart rate taken first thing in the morning or after sitting quietly for five to ten minutes. If that number routinely lands above 100, something is driving it up.

Caffeine, Nicotine, and Other Stimulants

Caffeine triggers the release of stress hormones (noradrenaline and norepinephrine) that directly speed up your heart. Most people tolerate this fine, but if you’re sensitive, even a moderate amount can cause palpitations or extra beats. People who are prone to atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heart rhythm, may see a noticeable spike with sustained caffeine use or large doses.

Nicotine works similarly, stimulating the same fight-or-flight pathways. Decongestants found in cold and allergy medications are another common culprit. These drugs mimic adrenaline to shrink swollen nasal passages, but the same mechanism raises your heart rate as a side effect. Asthma inhalers containing albuterol also stimulate receptors in the heart, which is why some people feel jittery or notice a racing pulse after using one. Amphetamines and cocaine push heart rate up dramatically through the same stress-hormone pathways.

Stress, Anxiety, and Panic

Your nervous system doesn’t distinguish between a bear chasing you and an inbox full of urgent emails. Stress and anxiety activate the same adrenaline response, sending your heart rate climbing. During a panic attack, heart rates can spike well above 100 bpm and feel genuinely alarming.

There’s a useful way to tell anxiety-driven heart racing apart from a heart rhythm problem. Anxiety palpitations tend to happen during or right after a stressful moment, ease up when you breathe deeply or distract yourself, and return to normal once the stress passes. They also typically don’t cause chest pain, fainting, or extreme fatigue. Arrhythmia-related palpitations, by contrast, can strike at random, even when you’re calm or asleep. They often feel erratic rather than just fast, and they’re more likely to come with chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness.

Dehydration

When you’re dehydrated, your blood volume drops. Less fluid in the bloodstream means each heartbeat pumps less blood, so your heart compensates by beating faster to maintain circulation. This is one of the most overlooked causes of an elevated heart rate, especially in hot weather, after exercise, or during illness with vomiting or diarrhea. If your heart feels like it’s working hard and you haven’t been drinking enough water, dehydration is a likely explanation. Rehydrating typically brings your rate back down within an hour or so.

Fever and Illness

Your heart rate rises roughly 10 bpm for every degree Fahrenheit of fever. This is your body’s normal response: faster blood flow helps deliver immune cells to where they’re needed and dissipates heat. A heart rate of 110 during a flu with a 101°F fever is expected. It should settle back to normal as the fever breaks.

Thyroid Problems

An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) is one of the most common medical causes of a persistently high heart rate. Thyroid hormones directly affect the heart’s pacemaker cells, speeding up the rate at which they fire. They also increase the heart’s contractility and lower resistance in blood vessels, which together push the cardiovascular system into a higher gear. If your resting heart rate is elevated and you’re also experiencing unexplained weight loss, feeling hot all the time, trembling hands, or difficulty sleeping, thyroid function is worth checking with a simple blood test.

Anemia

Anemia means your blood carries fewer red blood cells or less hemoglobin, so each unit of blood delivers less oxygen to your tissues. Your heart responds the same way it does to dehydration: it beats faster to compensate for reduced oxygen delivery per beat. People with anemia often notice their heart racing during activities that didn’t used to feel demanding, like walking up a flight of stairs or carrying groceries. Fatigue, pale skin, and feeling short of breath with mild exertion are other hallmarks.

Medications That Raise Heart Rate

Several common medication categories can push your heart rate up:

  • Asthma inhalers and bronchodilators stimulate the same receptors that adrenaline targets, increasing heart rate as a side effect.
  • Decongestants in cold and sinus medications act like mild stimulants on the cardiovascular system.
  • ADHD medications containing stimulants (methylphenidate, amphetamine-based drugs) directly increase sympathetic nervous system activity.
  • Some heart medications, including certain drugs used to strengthen the heartbeat, can paradoxically trigger faster or irregular rhythms.

If you started a new medication and noticed your heart rate climbing, that connection is worth raising with your prescriber. Don’t stop a prescribed medication on your own, but the timing can be an important clue.

Heart Rate Spikes When Standing Up

If your heart races every time you stand, you may be dealing with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, commonly called POTS. The diagnostic threshold is a heart rate increase of at least 30 bpm within the first 10 minutes of standing (40 bpm for adolescents), without a significant drop in blood pressure. People with POTS often feel lightheaded, dizzy, or foggy when upright, and the symptoms improve when they sit or lie down. POTS is more common in women between 15 and 50 and frequently develops after a viral illness, surgery, or pregnancy.

Alcohol

Alcohol has a complicated relationship with heart rate. In the short term, it dilates blood vessels and can trigger a compensatory increase in heart rate. Heavier drinking is a well-established trigger for atrial fibrillation, sometimes called “holiday heart syndrome” because it often shows up after a night of binge drinking. Even moderate alcohol consumption raises heart rate in some people, particularly if combined with dehydration.

Lack of Sleep and Physical Deconditioning

Poor sleep elevates stress hormones, which in turn keeps your resting heart rate higher than it would otherwise be. Chronic sleep deprivation compounds this effect over time. Physical deconditioning works through a different mechanism: when your heart muscle is less efficient from inactivity, it needs more beats to deliver the same amount of blood. This is why people who’ve been sedentary or bedridden often notice a higher resting heart rate that gradually improves with regular aerobic exercise.

Warning Signs That Need Immediate Attention

A fast heart rate on its own, especially if you can connect it to caffeine, stress, or dehydration, is usually not an emergency. But certain combinations of symptoms suggest something more serious is happening.
